yeh but inwroclaw don't forget that many of those people esp the younger ones might have spent at least a year or two in the UK

I always ask them if they lived in the UK. So far, the vast majority have not even been for a weekend.

where passport control have opened my UK passport and asked me a question in English, I've always replied in Polish.

Show off!

Just to give an example, my English competence has risen greatly since my activity on this forum.

As long as you're not picking up any bad habits from some of the posters on the forum, with some of the supposed English teachers making spelling errors and not knowing where apostrophes go, etc etc.

Don't forget the ubiquitous influence of games ^_^. Scoff though one might...

Most of my friends in MMOs speak passable accented to very good english in Ventrillo, Skype, and Other Voip supported programs. And many are from Russia, Hungaria, some Polish, and the region. And they are usually undetectable in chat communication (since who uses proper syntex or grammar in Forums on the average?)

And many are self-taught and ended up preferrring to be on North American/UK servers (more populous and more avaialable servers with quicker repair) despite the inevitable lag. Over the past two years my Hungarian friend's spoken has caught up with his written just chattering in Vent once he felt brave enough to join in verbally. Though the median age of the communicators is between 14-25 we have a few junior members in our PvP league and the RP players has a handful of English speakers in 40s (Polish and Czech mostly, 1 Russsian and one Slovak)

Heck..My fiancee sounds more american than I do in thinking, memes, opinions... and speaking on many days ^_^. Specially when he is fresh before late hours start making him fuzzy.

Heh ..Nerds unite!?

It is factually true that more Poles today "speak" English rather than either French (as once the custom) or Spanish. The difference is, they speak the latter usually far better than the former, a language everyone in Europe is basically forced to learn!
