I watched the "penalty" situation again today, with calm head.
Daylight robbery.
The VAR system was supposed to eliminate the referees' mistakes (or "mistakes"). It didn't. If anything it aggravated the situation. When "the wrong team" has a faulty goal accidently awarded, then the VAR system is always there to point out the mistake and cause the disallowment of the goal. However, when "the right teams" scores a faulty goal or has an idiotic "penalty" awarded, then the venal referee can simply decide that he doesn't wish to see the video replay.
Absolutely disgusting. This is not football anymore.
Hasn't it always been that way? One reason (among many) that Americans don't find soccer appealing is that the referees have too much unaccountable power... and can essentially award goals to teams on a whim....
How often are international referees disciplined for poor/biased performance?
On the other hand, I can understand TPTB wanting England in the final over Denmark...(big country vs small country) but why would they be invested in an English victory (especially after turning the continent against the English team)?
OK, so this is a Londoners take on the game. Yes, the penalty was soft but was upheld by VAR and I have seen those given week in week out in all the major European leagues.
Also the Danish media that I read were not moaning about the penalty and were proud of their team's achievement. In any case, England had a bigger penalty shout when Kane was taken down, but that was not given. Either way, who do you think was the better team? The stats don't lie.Figures below are England first then Denmark. Possesion % 58 v 42 Passing accuracy 87 v 81 Attempts on target 10 v 4 Passes 730 v 534 Shots 20 v 6 Corners 6 v 5
Denmark are a good team, better than Germany but except for a short phase in the game, when they scored, they looked tired, maybe a lack of fitness.England dominated the game and were clearly the better team.
I would suggest that it would have been crueler for England to go out on penalties than for Denmark to lose on a disputed penalty.
Looking to the final,. England's advantages are being at home, youth, confidence and only conceding one goal in this tournament to Italy's three. Italy's advantages are that they will also have many fans at Wembley due to the large number of Italians living here, they have a huge goalkeeper, they are more skillful in almost every area than England and they are better versed in "The Dark Arts" (witness how little football was actually played in the last 5 minutes of their game against Spain.
So, all you England haters, I think Italy will be too strong for England. But you never know...... :-)
Can anyone name a less consequential and more boring activity than watching sports? And why do these people in bars scream and jump when a round ball hits a net?
Can you name a more peaceful alternative for tribal wars than sports???
Getting drunk and falling to the floor unconscious. This is what most sports fans do when their team wins. When it loses, they do the same at the local police station.
Getting drunk and falling to the floor unconscious
Sports is so much better to let it all out! To show your neighbour what you truly think of him....enjoy victories together, cry over defeats....and nobody dies, gets hurt or has to clean up and rebuild whole cities afterwards (rarely that is)!
Actually I'm talking about football! It has to be a team sport.....no tennis nor golf heats up german blood as much as football and I guess that's the same in the whole of Europe.
If you would live here you would feel it, you would be part of it.... but looking in from the far away US you might not be able to understand that!
I can think of only three things more important than football in life: God, family and fatherland (for obvious reasons, so I won't explain).
What else could be more important?
Job? Yer havin a laugh... maybe if you are a Nobel-prize-winning scientist whose discovery can change the world, rock star or a top Hollywood actor. Maybe...
However, 99,9% of people in the world have menial, boring jobs with ZERO effect on the world at large (no matter if they are a street sweeper or a medium company CEO), from which they dream to retire as soon as possible.
Career? What does this word even mean? People won't remember exactly what you did or even care one year after you retire, and in 10 years it will be completely forgotten (unless you're a famous writer, scientist etc. - 0,001% of people). Those who sacrifice their time, health and family relations for their so-called careers are only moderately intelligent (to put it mildly).
Money? Nope. Most "needs" that people in the first world have these days are not genuine but rather invented or forced upon them. If one has enough to support his family on a decent level then struggling hard to get more and more is nonsensical. After all, we only live for 80 years or so, so what's the point of wasting your life to chase after money?
Health? Yeah, right! I would be infinitely more healthy if I wasn't a football supporter (imagine supporting Polish NT!). I would have healthier nerves, digestive system and would probably consume significantly less alcohol, so that would give me a chance to extend my lifespan from approx. 80 to approx 83-84, but I would miss on all the emotions and all the drama, all the love and elation and all the heartbreak and hate. Not worth it. :)
So, yeah, the below list...
1. God (that's a question of eternity, after all, not mere 80-90 years in this vale of tears). 2. Family (close friends are counted in this category as well) 3. Fatherland. 4. Football. (for atheists it's 3Fs - Family, Fatherland, Football :)) ... ... ... ... ... 176 Health 177 Job/career 178 money ... ... ... ... ... 784361 posting on PF
