If you have enough, you can buy a football team or at least follow your favorite one in your own private jet.

Hmm... or you can buy a rival team and lead them to an epic downfall. You've got a point there ;)

@Novichok

You just don't get it Rich.....

Football is the most important non-essential thing in the world

Absolutely spot on!

Sports is so much better to let it all out!

Another guy that just "gets it".

Some people get it others don't.

If they don't get it then it is their loss.

BTW, football or soccer in American is really catching on in the USA and actually their national team is pretty good.
Give it another ten to twenty years and the Yanks might catch up with the Europeans.
And then thrash us....... :-(

One is entitled to love watching sports only if his weight is the same it was when he was 20. By law, if your weight is more than 20 pounds greater, you should no be allowed to watch sports. If the government in the UK can regulate who you have sex with...

BTW, football or soccer in American is really catching on in the USA

Yes, a nation that is 33% grotesquely obese and 66% grossly overweight desperately needs another reason to get fatter. Not that the Brits are much better...

Why would football make them fatter?

Watching anything makes you fatter. Football included.
Playing football is another matter. I can't imagine anything healthier. The problem is that you can't do it alone, requires a field, and it's hard to do it when the weather is crappy.

@Novichok

Kids are supposed to play it more than watch it.

And many do. See 425. I was talking about the adults - already swimming in their own fat here. The last thing they need is another sport on teevee.

@Novichok

Point taken.
The UK does tend to follow American trends but I think we are still many years behind your people swimming in their own fat LOL!!! !

Can anyone name a less consequential and more boring activity than watching sports

Yes, easy: needing to comment on sports being inconsequential and boring. :)

I'll give you that some, or many, treat sports like a religion, but when enjoyed as a game, sports are wonderful. Competition is one of those core human interactions. It employs strategy, preparation, durability, adaptability, decision-making, overcoming obstacles, finesse, strength, etc. plus, it's really fun.

You ever play any competitive sports, Novichok?

I think Romanians use "da" as well.

American football

American football is kinda like grape-nuts, neither American (it originated from European rugby) nor football.

Living in a stable doesn't make you a horse. ;)

This is true ;-)

TBH I have never really felt "English", though I do regard myself as a Londoner.

My passport says I'm British and my name says I'm Polish.

Make what you want of that LOL!

it originated from European rugby

It originated from Europe like all the other good things in the US. The US was populated by Europeans. That's what made America great in the past.

What I like about that sport is that it allows guys with the bigger frame to team up and compete against each other in a full contact sport. Society needs that in the age of low testosterone soy boys

A sport for wusses - all that protective clothing and helmets, lol! Rugby - now that's a game, if you don't mind getting your neck broken when the scrum collapses :(

To be fair, guys playing it aren't very frail. No wonder it's gaining popularity in Poland. I tried rugby once, seemed too easy for me. Was fun tho, but if I am the only one liking it. Hard to organize it internationally then.

in a full contact sport

the rule seems that the rougher the (team) sport on the field the calmer the fans, soccer is the least violent of the major team sports but fans are the most violent, while football and rugby are far rougher but have far more civilized fans

The Florida-Georgia college football rivalry is one of the most intense in the country but there's no effort (or need) to keep fans physically separated.... (Georgia fans are in red, Florida in Blue)

Yes, that's the story of our nation. I spent three years in Ireland myself, but could never leave Poland permanently - I'm too addicted to this country. :)

Nothing wrong with that but they should take off all those tons of medieval armor and play rugby like men.

Exactly! I wrote my response before I read yours. :)

Rugby? There are ruby teams all over the world.

I wrote it from my own perspective, when I was a teenager and the gym teacher wanted to see how it would do with the class. It felt great as I easily scored all the time, nobody could stop me.

It was tried only once tho.

I also implied metaphorically at the same time, as Americans basically play locally American football. Even if there are other teams internationally, it's basically only the U.S society that cares about it.

Just like winter sports in Norway, Icehockey in Canada etc. some sports just take a lot of space in different society's

Rugby in English past controlled countries Australia, New Zealand and Ireland etc

The more contact/victories/meaning the greater the attention it gets.

Congratulations, however that may of course be partly, as much as, or more of a reflection on the other players as your own skills.

Rugby in English past controlled countries Australia, New Zealand and Ireland etc

If I were you, I'd not say that at the Stade de France...

It (Union) is a major international game and League is a very thriving sport too.

Congratulations, however that may of course be partly, as much as, or more of a reflection on the other players as your own skills.

We were all amateurs during that one match, with no experience in rugby. It wasn't about skills

What made you think it's about skills? In Norway everyone get's a medal for participation, skill contests aren't a reality past 18. Unless it changed, which I highly doubt.

Well the French were under the English in times of medieval Europe either they like it or not. There is also a reason why I write here in English and not French, French used to be compulsory in my family. Now, not very much so.

Except of those speaking French here on the forum and their enthusiasts. I have very little regard for France, something French or their language. I have met French people in real life, and their men have never seemed impressive to me for one bit.

As a history enthusiast I still haven't gotten over certain things. Despite English football fans behaving badly during their recent match with Germany, the shameful kissing up to Stalin by the labeour government right after ww2. Which communists in Poland always wanted to blame Churchill for, which has been brainwashing propaganda ever since and can hear it echoed by plenty of Poles wether the topic of bad emotions towards the U.K pop up.

It's hard to say that there is anything else but, indifference towards France.

France? What of it? Why even bother mentioning them? They obviously did not care for Gdańsk, why should I know?

when I was a teenager and the gym teacher wanted to see how it would do with the class.

I thought as much ..........if you had the experience of playing on an experienced team, even at junior level, you'd have a very different story to tell. A bunch of kids 'having a go' at the rudiments of rugby is not actually playing rugby! Secondary school rugby is played at a very serious level in countries with a tradition of rugby playing.

It was tried only once tho.

Probably when the school authorities realised how rough it can get and the serious injuries that can be sustained. I wasn't joking about broken necks in the scrum. Anybody from a rugby playing country will tell you tales of teenagers paralysed for life from rugby injuries sustained in school teams.

a reflection on the other players

Exactly.

I know, Scandinavia is basically like a kindergarten with soft pillows under their armpits. Now I love the real life in Poland. Full of adventure :D

Even tho it's one of the safest places in the world ironically.

No need to get riled up about my perception of rugby, I am no expert in it

Except for road deaths. Some of the most dangerous driving in Europe.

@ Oathbreaker, I think you should read this. It's a long article, but it's worth the time. All the points he makes are very valid.
