I like to root for underdogs....as long as it isn't Germany, heh:)
So....today that would mean me rooting for Switzerland against Spain and....no....not Belgium.....I don't like them....hmmm.....and Czechia and Danmark are both underdogs....but Ukraine is a clear case again, I root for Ukraine!!! :)
Yeah...I remember that from the 80's....the US team had been for many the team of choice....compared to our GDR dopies...less football though, more Olympia!
Yeah, during the Iron Curtain era, international competitions felt as much a competition between ideologies as it was an athletic competition. The Miracle on Ice made us USians realize that the Soviets weren't an invincible monolith, but a beatable foe who had vulnerabilities. AH...those were the days. :)
Funny, I'm a PROUD redwhiteandblue blooded USian, but when it comes to soccer the US team means nothing to me-I'll take Poland and Italy over my fellow countrymen . Recently, the behavior of some US athletes during the Olympics have me rooting against them.
Fetisov started it, he chafed the most under the old soviet system....Larionov followed I think.....the others came later....
Not all of them were successful, especially Krutov, they missed the strict environment and couldn't work so well on their own, not to mention that this famous line was broken up....
But Fetisov, Larionov and later also Kasatonov did reasonable well...
Those players loved Tichnov, though.
Na ja..."love" is a bit far fetched....he was more feared than loved! :)
But he achieved successes like nobody else did....
I watched a documentary that had Kasatonov on it. And, he made it sound like Tichnov was idolized by his players.
He was definitely idolized by Kasatonov! :)
I guess you never heard of the super spat between Fetisov and Kasatonov? Both worked closely together in their line but couldn't stand each other for political reasons.
Fetisov the free spirit who dreamed of the NHL and did go into an open fight with Tichonov till they let him leave...and Kasatonov who was loyal to the end and only left as he had to...a story for movies!
No, I wasn't aware of the spat between fetisov and kasatonov. The thing about festinov wanting to leave rings a bell. Yeah, it has all of the tensions, desires, fractures, and recapitulation that makea for a good movie. When you gonna produce and direct it, Beebs? :)
I'm glad the "Swiss" lost on penalties. Just look at their starting eleven: Rodriguez, Akanji, Zakaria, Shaqiri, Embolo, Seferović (plus Gavranovic, Fernandes, Lotomba, Mbabu, Mvogo, Vargas, Xhaka). And Switzerland, as far as I know, never had any colonies. I can understand a two or three "stranieri" in an NT, but not more than half a team! This is ridiculous.
And two of the mercenaries missed penalties :) Good riddance.
