Man with axe attacks people at Warsaw University

A 22 year old man (identified variously as a Pole or 'Polish citizen' who was carrying an axe entered the main campus of Warsaw University and attacked a woman (said to be a receptionist) and killing (beheading) her and attacked a security guard in the hospital (in critical condition).

Classes tomorrow are cancelled.

You read about things like this in the media and it's easy to forget that two families (the victim's and the killer's) have been devastated and awful for the security guard's family too.

Early twenties is, IIRC, when schizophrenia starts manifesting.... could likely be that.

Anyone who's OH works in a university in a job where he sometimes has to tell students things they don't want to hear probably won't sleep well tonight.

Nevertheless, Poland and other civilised countries don't kill people whose brain chemicals are so badly affected by illness that they end up doing thing like that.

A bigger measure of our humanity and decency is what we do to protect the innocent.... he's removed himself from that category so the primary concern is to prevent him from being able to hurt others.

If his mental health is such that he did an appalling thing like that, then he's innocent due to his illness which he has no control over.

About protecting the innocent (from the effects of serious mental illness in others), perhaps society would do well not to squeeze mentalhealth services in order to provide tax breaks for 'investors' and expensive statues of dead clergy.
