You're right, I meant Christmas Eve / Wigilia. On Christmas Day itself, you can eat and drink to your hearts contents ;) Many Poles treat this day as a prelude to the New Years Eve.

I wrote about vodka consumption, not about alcohol in general.

As far as alcohol consumption in general it's, for example, higher in the Czech Republic than in Poland, but the Czechs are famous for their beer. The alcohol consumption is also higher in France than in RuSSia, but I'm guessing that's because the French drink wine with their meals. There's a different drinking culture there.

In countries like RuSSia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine there is a high percentage of spirits consumption (up to 52%).

In Poland according to KCPU data from 2023 the most popular drink was beer (54%), then spirits, including vodka (38%) and then wine (8%).

No matter the name, alcohol is poison.
