We should get this straight.

Yes, that is really amazing that you want to be so intrusive and overbearing with your crazy Hello on the beach. :):) Leave people alone, for fuk`s sake! Don`t meddle in their affairs, it is not your shity business if they want to hear your moronic hello or not. Poles are freedom-oriented guys, they don`t want to be forced to do things that various idiots expect them to do. :):)

He's an idiot Doug.

Our traditional birdbrain moron has joined the discussion. The more, the merrier. :):) But later don`t go to mods, crying you were abused, ashole.. :):)

@Miloslaw

Why do you say that? Interpersonal behavior that is expected in the Anglosphere is considered strange elsewhere. That's the main reason why Brits and Americans believe that the French, Dutch, Germans and Poles are rude for example.

It's a cultural thing.

Maybe Pawian doesn't do hikes. I find it ignorant and highly intimidating when people don't greet me back on an isolated beach.
I don't give a fukk what Pawian and other people say who can't accept change. You wanted the EU and it's money. Get a life.

Happy to say that after 30 years here. I might be an old drunk but I can't abide rudeness.

Whilst that is true, to a degree,Poles do not mind when friendliness is shown.
Even if it is in a way that is alien to them.
Poles adapt quite quickly.
You underestimate them.

Happy to say that after 30 years here.

If that makes you believe you are a better guy, I must disappoint you - you are a loser. :):)

You underestimate them.

Birdbrain, I don`t underestimate anybody. Just don`t like when losers come and try to teach me how to live.

should not necessarily say a cursory hello?

It depends, if someone nodded, smiled or said hi to me, I would return the greeting, but I wouldn't go out of my way to say hello to a stranger.

They consider such behavior fake and shallow.

That's because it is. Good post, agree completely.

who can't accept change

Why would they have to change? Just because a certain behavior is the norm in Anglo-American countries doesn't mean that others have to copy it. Think of the queueing in Britain. Time-honored tradition. Now try the same in France and you will see how far your manners get you. After 10,000 people have skipped the line you will capitulate... :)

here is another good one that he talks about reminding me of Poland:

the warsaw fakeness or judging people by looks or clothes.

- you are a loser

You are probably the rudest, most insulting Pole I have ever come across.
I bet you are even proud of that.
Yet you insult the strong Polish tradition of politeness and courtesy.
You are a disgrace to Poles.

hahaha your production here is a disgrace to human intelligence, I know you don`t realise it, good for you because you are not aware of your idiocy so you must be a happy person. I sometimes envy you. :)):

Have any of the critics here, including Pawian, tried walking from Kolobrzek to Hel?
I have, and anybody who has would know there are beaches where you might not meet people for 15 kilometres, because they are only open at certain times because of NATO exercises.

So they are secluded
Yet Pawian pretends that humans should ignore each other in a totally secluded environment?
Who is the weirdo here?
pawian 224 | 24,484
23 Jun 2019 #44
Yes, I consider it perfectly all right that I leave people alone to their thoughts and business and do not meddle into their private affairs. :):)

Where did you learn this fekking intrusiveness? Not in Poland. You must have brought it from England, right? :):)

I see you are mistaking Sahara or Gobi Deserts with a Polish beach. Sorry, even secluded beaches in Poland don`t allow you to be so intrusive.. :):)

where you might not meet people for 15 kilometres, because they are only open at certain times because of NATO exercises.

That`s a useless statement, you can walk for 50 km without meeting anybody on the beach and that still doesn`t mean anything because it is enough to turn right or left, cross the dunes and the wooded strip of land and you will run into locals in a nearby village.

There are secluded places especially in winter, early spring or late autumn.
Still some would think it odd or slightly dangerous if a stranger said hello to them in such circumstances. And if we're talking about being friendly why such a reaction just because someone doesn't greet you back? Not very friendly or sociable really. A smile or a nod would be ok, too. But perhaps my perspective is different as I'm a woman.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the British (far more than other peopels IME) are driven to anger (or even blind rage) at norms of behavior that are different from their own....

And it's only (some) long time Brits in Poland who are perversely proud of their poor knowledge of Polish....
Dougpol1 31 | 2,640
24 Jun 2019 #48
I don't know what that means mafketis. If you have cracked the B1 barrier, then good for you. Have a cigar. For myself, I reached A2 level Polish after the first year here and have never improved my language skills apart from vocabulary, because I don't write in Polish. That would have required study and effort for a reading and writing learner, and I'm as lazy as Boris Johnson allegedly is in that category. Why would anyone be proud of being lazy? That's just the way they are in some respects.

Poles are cold at the beginning, they need time to warm up to you.

Sorry Pawian, but it's basic manners and common courtesy to 'salute' as we say in Ireland, a stranger whom you encounter in a situation such as the beach one that Doug describes.

but it's basic manners and common courtesy to 'salute' as we say in Ireland, a stranger ... such as the beach

According to who? Poles might well perceive it as getting in their faces and forcing your presence on them... co kraj to obyczaj...

After a few years most people learn to deal with a foreign country as it is (and not as a deformed version of their home country).

According to natural human instincts which are to interact with other humans. We're social creatures. Incidentally, on this very topic, I came across this article the other day.

The benefits of talking to strangers:
bbc.com/news/world-48459940

And in this instance ie on the beach or a country walk, we're not talking about trying to engage anybody in conversation, merely acknowledging their presence in a pleasant manner.

Sorry Pawian, but it's basic manners and common courtesy to 'salute' as we say in Ireland,

Salute or an open palm gesture shows that I am not a threat.

In the US, it's normal to have a 30-second small talk where it's possible, including checkouts. If you can include a joke, it's even better. My best was at an IRS office when I told the agent that whatever she is paid she is underpaid. You should have seen a smile on her face. Self-serving but effective.

Salute or an open palm gesture shows that I am not a threat.

In Ireland 'to salute' a person comes from the French word 'salut' which can be used as hello or goodbye, a bit like czesć in Polish. We have some peculiarities in Hiberno-English stemming from the Norman colonization back in the 12 century. Incredible how we've retained them for 800 years! If you say that a person failed to salute you, it means they didn't acknowledge you either by a word or gesture.

@Rich,
Addiction most certainly is a disease, don't let's absolve ourselves of our societal responsibilities!!
Be it alcohol, drugs, tobacco, yes, even sure, an addiction is a disease. Look the word up in the dictionary.

If you say that a person failed to salute you, it means they didn't acknowledge you either by a word or gesture.

Under some circumstances, like in prisons, failure to show respect by briefly acknowledging another guy's presence can be deadly.
Short of that extreme, it's smart not to be a standoffish a-hole in bars, w "silowniach", and wherever booze or testosterone are in oversupply.

24 Jun 2019 #59
When it comes to places with booze in Warsaw it is the females who are rude *****. Especially at this Latino music bar place called Sam Escobar. They are total ******* and users there. They routinely walk in front of you and shove you out of the way if you're male and I guess the people take it there or they act like there is no repercussions for their behavior.
