Hi All,

My girlfriend (Polish) would liek to get her son (Polish) an ID card so he can travel in Schengen - the father of child is being difficult. Does she require both signatures to get this? (it's my understanding she does for passport).

many thanks.

Children don't have ID cards. ID means you are 18 years old or over. For a child the mother can write the name of the child in her passport or get a separate passport for the child. I think both parents need to sign for the child to obtain any documents so that the child can travel outside the country of living.

the father of child is being difficult

what do you mean?

Wrong. You can have an ID since you're born.

If the kid is under 13, yes she does require the father's signature. If the kid is 13 or over, only one parent's signature is required.

However, if the father is acting against the best interests of the child, the mother can go to the family court and ask the judge to waive the requirement for the father to sign. But I would think long and hard before doing anything which involved the family court.

Thanks everyone.

Yes, she is going through the court just now. Mediation didn't work. Father is being un-responsive to anything. He got passport for a year as he was under 5, but now over 5 and so needs new one, requiring his signature.

Her lawyer has applied to the court. Was just wondering if there was an interim solution.

Can she write in her passport or is it required to have own passport now?

thanks.
