I plan on moving to Poland in the next year as it is one of my favorite places. I have been to Warsaw and krakow. I have been learning the language for about 6 months. I work online teaching TEFL and I want to live there for a year and then eventually apply for permanent residency if I decide to stay. My question is if I want to live in Poland and I am not studying or working for a polish company and I don't have family there am I still able to apply for a temporary residency as a US citizen? I have researched this but it is not very clear.

teaching TEFL

You're teaching teachers online?

I work

If you're on the territory of the Republic of Poland and working, you'll generate a tax liability.

I have researched this but it is not very clear.

Researched online? A good bet would be to contact your local Polish Consulate. That or your own country's Embassy in Poland.

If you're self employed, your country has a Chamber of Commerce in Warsaw. They may not be much help however it's worth having a few words with them.

Well, they won't allow you to just move to Poland (or EU) without any restrictions. They want you to have a job in the last 3 years and other specifications, translated:

A long-term EU resident's residence permit may be obtained by a foreigner who:

- Stayed in Poland legally and continuously for at least 5 years;
- Has a stable and regular source of income for 3 years of stay in Poland immediately before submitting the application (in the case of people with the Blue Card, stable earnings are required for a period of 2 years);
- Has health insurance;
- Has a guaranteed right to reside on a premises in Poland;
- Possesses knowledge of the Polish language (at least B1 level).
