Genealogy / Are all Poles blue eyed and blonde? [451]

Is red hair ( rudy ) in Poland considered lucky ?

There is a saying in Polish:

Rudy to falszywy or Rude to falszywe (the second one has an added hint of malice on the part of the speaker). It means "the red haired ones are dishonest".

Life / Is the word "Polack"rascist? [185]

By the way, Polka music comes from Ukrane not Poland.

Nope.
It is a Czech dance.
The name comes from Czech "pulka" meaning "half" (beat), which is the rythm of the dance. Eventually "pulka" was changed into "polka" which in Polish means a Polish woman. Hence the confusion.

A similarly confusing one is what is known as "polska". It is a Swedish 3/4-beat dance which has Polish roots.

The trick is to recapture the word, so it's offensiveness is devalued...

Much like what Canadians did with "canuck"

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Poland shares slavic language, culture and was ruled by eastern european entities historicaly.

"entities"?
If by that you mean individuals the Poland was also ruled by western entities, oh, and a northern one too.
If, however, by the word "entities" you mean that Poland was occupied by other countries then a part of it it was also ruled at one time by a western and a central European entity. And come to think about it, India having been ruled by the Brits is a Western European country, right?

closer to crotia

Poland is as close to Croatia as it is to Greece or Italy. Actually, barring the language, I find more commonalities between Poles and Italians than with any of the former Yugoslavian countries.

correct me if I am wrong.

I just did.

Life / Is the word "Polack"rascist? [185]

Nope. The word, as used in English, is of German origin and has nothig to do with immigration.

The word often appears in reference to Poles who were no immigrants at all. You need to brush up the literature of your own country before you get a whack at those you know nearly nothing about. Read Hamlet. You won't have to go far, Act One, Scene One. And that's just one example.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Ideologically, well, more closely allied with Central Europe now but 3.5 years in the EU doesn't push away about 40 years of communism and a long legacy/aftermath.

Ideaologically Poland was occupied by a communist country and the 40 years of the so called "communism in Pland" was 40 years of struggle against it.

do you poles consider yourselfs western european culturally

Yes.

historically

Partly

linguistically such as france, britain, germany, denmark.

Lingiustics has nothhing to do with it.

you are nothing like the british, german or french.

Thankfully, not.

we western europeans all share similer languages unlike the poles. we all share similer histories and culture.

Yea, I like especially the London falvor of flamenco, and the French version of stiff upper lip :)

all our media knows this and all of our textbooks in schools know this ADMIT IT

You're not trying to convince me you're familiar with textbooks, are you? Let alone ALL of them :)

locked away in a communist cupboard for decades and before that you didnt have much influence in terms of culture in the west like germany or britian etc did.

Again, you know squat about Poland's history. Too much to explain. Find some books on the subject. And please, for your own sake, avoid the ones translated from German in early 20th century.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

No matter how much you argue or whine you are NOT western european. I dont know why you are so unwillinging to accept this.

I never said Poland is a Western European country so I have no clue why would you be arguing about that. It is a central European country. I don't know why you are unwilling to accept this.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

the war is gone but cultures, language, religion, economics, way of living and politics still exist.

- the world is too small for cultures to differ that much. You need to go out more.
- Poland's religion is predominantly Roman Catholicism, further East it's Orthodox.
- Poland has market economy like any Western European country
- Way of living? Whatever yiu mean by that, Polish way of living is much closer to the French or Italian ways of living than English is to either.

if poland was western europe which you poles are trying so hard to convince

Quote me on that. I never said Poland is a Western European country.

keep pretending your part of western europe because you are fooling no one.

Again, a quote please.

you have only been in the eu for a few years and you think you are as good as us.

So you consider yourself "good" ? :)))
Well, I hope Poles never manage to be like you.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

It irritates me that poles think they are like britain, germany, france, italy, denmark etc when they are not.

I agree they are not

britain

Poles did not betray their allies

germany

Poles did not have a madman's dream about ruling most of Europe for 1000 years

france

Poles did not run away from attacking enemy nor did the offer Heil Hitler salutes to liberating forces (just in case they might be Germans)

Italy

Poles did not have grandiose dreams and then stumbled upon militarilly insignificant Greece.

So sure, there are differences.

@noimmigration

I did some tinking here. Considering the proximity of creatures like you, I would like Poland to be an Eastern Europen country.

Keep out.

We'll call you.

Food / Smalec - how to make it? [53]

smalec is indispensible in some Polish pastry products. For instance chruściki aka faworki. Ver yummy. Very unhealthy, just like life itself :)

A French fella I know, commenting on dieting and so called health food: if you tak sugar out of sweets, alcohol out of wine and fat out of meat then why eat at all?

Food / Barszcz czerwony recipe (Beetroot Soup) [48]

That is quite a complex recipe so here is my mom's. This is pretty good for when you want to have barszcz the same day ;)

Prep time from start to finish is about 1 hour or less.

5 medium size beetroots
1 small cellery root
3 parlsey roots
1/3 pound of fresh carrots
6 bay leaves
10 pimiento seeds (ziele angielskie)
1 generous teaspoon of table salt
a pinch or two og ground black pepper
1/2 cup of saurekraut juice

Thinly peel and slice or dice. The smaller the slices or dice the faster it will all cook. Peel and slice cellery root and parsley. Bring about 2 quarts (2 liters) of water to a rolling boil and place all ingredients (except sauerkraut juice and black pepper) in the pot with boiling water. Bring the mixture to a boil again and turn the cooking temperature so a little more than a simmer.

Add some of the ground pepper and some of the sauerkraut juice. This part is more an art and personal preference than hard rule. Add ground pepper and saurekraut as needed. Each time you add some more, stirr give it a minute and taste again. If you think you added too much of some ingredient then add a little more water and try again.

Serve with or without the vegetables used to make barszcz and with your choice of: potatoes, sauerkraut and mushrooms pierogi, cottage cheese pierogi, or uszka aka tortellini with mushrooms. Some people settle for bread, toasted or not.

Reheating is OK.

Syrena Sport:

At the time it was considered the most beautiful car from behind 'the Iron Courtain' in western Europe. Unfortunately, the government found it "too extravagant and imperialistic" and it never went into production. The sole prototype was destroyed in early 70's.

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

if you live in Warsaw, admit it,lots of families use only bottled water to drink and cook

I don't live in Warsaw so I have nothing to admit.

yep.whatever.......blah bah, there is a differnce between using a water cooler for an office and having no safe drinking water coming out of your taps at home.......

I agree. "Blah, blah" bests characterizes your post.

One of the municiapal office where I frequently visit has signs posted warning against drinking tap water, unless it's boiled - check here:
regional.niagara.on.ca/living/health_wellness/wainfleet
Bottled water is preferred if you want to be safe from getting e.coli and such.

In some canadian minicipalities situation was so bad that people have died, and tap water was not an option even for personal hygiene. Not sure if this kind of news has any interest outside Canbada, so here it is:

diemer.ca/Docs/Diemer-Contamination.htm

Clearly then, Canada is a third world country, and so is Poland because a poster on PF saw people with bottled water in Warsaw.

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

Southern, with all due respect, e.coli doesn't just pop up in water out of the air. To put it plainly it is found mostly (but not solely) where **** abounds, such as animal farming areas.

Whether a lot of bottles contain e.coli, I don't know. Once in a while there is news about some grabage found in some food product, like benzene in Perrier for instance. If the source water is freee of e.coli and if the bottles are sealed before use then I can't see how e.coli can get inside.

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

Napierdalać also means:

- to tell a lot of bull$shit, lies (see note below)
- to beat someone up (although "wpierdolić komuś" seems to be more frequent)

NOTE:

michałki -untrue stories, bull$hit.

michałki is not vulgar though. This noun rarely occurs in singlular form. It is derived from and is a diminunitve form of Michał. Pretty interesting, isn't it?

I don't agree.

check PWN dictionary of the Polish language

although this word is used in a nowadays slang to express awe, when referring to someone else's story.

So after all you agree :)

Let's put it this way (just for illustration purposes):

Bartolome denies what I wrote is true. He keeps on denying, and dyneing, and throwinf examples in and after a while, rather impatiently, I'd say:

Ale facet bzdury napierdalasz.

Life / Computer stores and computer prices in Wroclaw [12]

I'm quite sure that a new Dell computer can only be bought direct from Dell.

Or from Walmart. Or form Best Buy.

Looks like I'll be buying all my computer needs in the states.

Much cheaper than EU.
