Going to a football match in Poland - don't forget your Pesel!

Went to the Arena Lublin to see Motor last weekend. Queued for longer than you'd expect for a 4th-tier club match, only to get to the front of the queue to see a notice saying to get your Pesel out and ready to hand to the cashier.

So you can't get into a match as a tourist! What?!

Life / Babysitting in Poland - unwritten rules [7]

Well, it was done in good will, as a favour - didn't want any money. I was just a bit taken aback that their late return wasn't even particularly acknowledged - just a regular "thanks for helping out".

Life / Babysitting in Poland - unwritten rules [7]

Would it be considered normal and perfectly acceptable to Poles for a couple to ask you to babysit their kids, not say anything specific about the time of their return, and then not come back until after 2.30am?

Love / Should I bring gifts? - help with a Polish wedding [46]

Definitely received around 500zl per person 20+ years ago when I had my wedding in Lublin, and been paying at least that (plus inflation) when attending weddings in PL since. It's kind of expected.

Law / Maintenance Claim From Mother - Poland [19]

Sorry Rich, I didn't realise. Terrible laws in Poland. Once that generation has gone, life can go back to normal. What kind of relationship does this mother expect to have with her daughter and you once she's taken you to court? Great, so she might get a few zlotych, but at what price? I feel so bad for you and your wife. Good luck with it. I hope you find a way.

What are you talking about? You don't have any legal obligation to your mother-in-law in the UK. Tell her to go hang!

News / WOSP in Poland [161]

My point is that in the UK, charity-funded equipment is the exception, whereas in Poland, through WOSP, it seems to be the rule.

I don't doubt for one minute that WOSP is doing amazing things, but it's a poor state of affairs when this charity is doing the work of the government.

News / WOSP in Poland [161]

I don't know. I don't think Children in Need or Red Nose Day are true parallels. They are not intended to fund the mass purchase of medical equipment for use in public hospitals. This seems to be WOSP's primary purpose, and they are proud of their red heart stickers on equipment found in just about every hospital in the land.

For me, this is wrong. The government should be funding this through taxation.

WOSP in Poland - why does it exist?

Genuine question. Wielka Orkiestra is clearly very popular and very much appreciated in Poland. However, looking from the outside, I can't understand why this has been allowed to effectively replace the central funding of medical equipment from the government.

How has this come about? Is there a movement in Poland to attempt to migrate the role of WOSP to an organisation under ministerial control?

Really interested in this phenomenon.
