Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Polish people can be very rude indeed, especially the women!

Perhaps I should start a new thread.
I am an English male looking for a Polish girl to be rude to me.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

I've only met nice Polish women who weren't rude to me.
Perhaps I've not been trying hard enough.
Polishgirltx, you for one, aren't being rude enough!

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

You conquered half of the world, enslaved Negros for centuries

Amongst my friends are a couple of Caribbean origin who live over the road, a man whose parents came from Mauritius, a girl have Pakistani, half English... If it hadn't been for the sins of the past in the British Empire, these people would not be here. It is the modern world and post-racial thinking that allows people like this to be my friends. British colonialism and slavery were things of the past. This country has passed that stage. We are all products of the past, but we live in the present and look to the future. Race, I hope, will have no place in the future.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

My Polish flatmate moved to ---- from Slough (where different communities seem much more ghettoised).
He did seem a little suprised at how varied are the origins of those I call my friends.
I think he expected everywhere in the UK to be like where he lived in Slough.
It is unfortunate that many Poles in the UK only see the more unpleasant side of mixed-ethnicity Britain.

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

Just as we were leaving Germany, queuing at the border, waiting to enter Poland, I pointed down at the vast river we were crossing, that marked the boundary between the two countries.

"What is that?" I asked the driver.
"It's a river." he said.

greenland isn't a country

It's part of Denmark, but strangely, it's not in the EU.

People in Newzealand... Shouldn't they be News-ish?

That is why it should be renamed Kiwiland.

Genealogy / Popular Polish First Names? [152]

Don't know how it's in the UK but in Poland every single has a lot of short names

We have no chance of matching the huge number of names every Polish individual can clock up.
I mean, when even personal names change grammatical case - you win!
I have three different lengths of name, according to how many syllables the speaker can be bothered to say.
My mate Dave is only ever called Dave. By everyone.
What people call me behind my back is their issue, not mine!

In Polish everything changes in grammatical case - it's not what I meant.

I realise you didn't mean this, but it doesn't happen in all languages.

'What ppl call me behind is their issue, not mine' - unfortunately I dont know what u mean in here

There are the names people use to address us.
When we're not listening, some people might use other names.

The main point I was making was that there are many different forms of the same name in Polish, that can be used for addressing the same individual. English can't match that huge variety of different forms. That is without even mentioning grammatical stuff.

The Greeks conquered Poland; the Romans conquered Poland

What do you mean conquered?
The Greeks didn't stray far from the Mediterranean or the Middle East.
The Romans didn't even get through Germany.
etc.

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

The Poles lack everything

The Poles have very few oranges and lemons. That's both the north and the south poles. Scientists and explorers might take a few with them.

I've had several oranges in Warsaw and Lomza (where I also had a watermelon - is non-citrus fruit too far from the topic?)

buy some meet

It doesn't cost money to meet people.

USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

wouldn't most agree that Clinton was relatively well linked around the world?

Agree.
That doesn't mean I could say too much about his achievements at home because I don't know.

who gives a **** about how popular bush is with other people from different countries

Every country needs friends and allies.
If your leader is very unpopular with countries that are usually your strongest allies, is that not cause for a little concern?
We can't vote for other people's leaders, but they can affect what happens in our lives, therefore, their actions are worthy of foreigners' criticism.

USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

my point is whatever foreigners say, it really doesnt matter here in the states.

True.

But it matters to people outside of the US.
I see it similarly for the UK.
People abroad may have their opinions, so they may state them publicly,
but it doesn't affect political discourse at home.

End of story

Michal finished, and they all lived happily ever after.

But...

I know the basics of economics as we had to study economics at

infants school - remember the Fisher-Price post-office set?

The Poles are not paying back their debts

That reminds me, it's rent money day for my flatmate.

Obviously, international banks have written off the debts

That's your explanation of Poland not even being in the top 49.
edit: oops - it's number 49!
Someone called Bob Geldof and Bono from U2...

What is the stupidest question?
There have been many and there will be many more,

but what is the stupidest answer?

Sometimes even a Native Pole has problems with pronounciation

Does everyone in Poland live in flats?
I heard not so long ago.

If they drive on the wrong side, what side is their steering wheels on?

If you do have a car with the driver's seat on the other side to everyone else,
get a large dog (Owczarek Podhalanski, for example) to sit by your side on the passenger seat.
Then try to make it look as if you are not the one doing the driving.

RUDE WORD ALERT

Kurwa is also found in Hungarian, where I believe it is a much ruder word.
So as not to upset the nice young Hungarian lady at work, the K-word has been banned.

W kurczaka jebanego!

Will any chickens get hurt in this sentence?

A word seeking world domination?

My favourite rude polish word of the moment is zjebany.
Or is it two words? - z jebany.
I don't know. I just like the sound of it.

I can stop holding my breath now.
Welcome back and thanks again.

I notice the L in jablko being pronounced.
I've not heard this before.
Should I learn it this way or take the usual shortcut?

A workmate recently picked up the word pizda.
He has fallen in love with this word.
He now has trouble ordering round, cheesy topping covered bready products without swearing in Polish.
This is strange because he never showed any interest in anything foreign before.

It is trying to take over the World!!!

Let's hazard a guess at some presence in Slovenian too.
Any more?

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

speak without accent

A contradiction.
Anyone who talks has some sort of accent.

I think that Polish ways of speaking English don't sound bad. It can sound quite nice.

From an English (you know - like we speak in England) perspective:
Ways of pronouncing the English 'o' sound (as you might find in hotel)
sometimes it is rendered as the monopthong as it is pronounced in Polish,
sometimes, more like the American version - like you might spell in Polish as 'oł',
but the one I don't like is where it is pronounced with a kind of 'e' (as in 'shed) sound - like 'eł'. This one is also common with Russians speaking English.

I shall briefly turn the question around.
What do Polish people think of the way English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, American, Australian, Jamaican people learning Polish sound?

I sound quite good actually.
Very slow, but good.
Although actually, probably not.

say things in scottish dialect to me

Life / Famous Polish music and musicians [48]

Zbigniew Preisner

The Three Colours sountracks are very good.

Polish Jazz

I never remember the names of the artists, but I have an LP of Polish Jazz.
It is also very good. It kicks the arse of the Czech and Russian jazz compilations I have.
