History / Pictures of Polish Jews holding coins and lemons? [25]

Czesc Bialystoker,

This is so intriguing! I'm interested to know what you find out about this.
I'm not Polish, but I put the question to my girlfriend who is, and she said she's not heard of the upside-down pictures with lemons and coins, but she reminded me that her mum has a fridge magnet of a little Jew [sic] which is supposed to bring good luck with money. The thing is, she bought this when we were at the Jewish museum in Kazimierz Dolny, which you might know was a historical centre of Polish Jewish culture. I'm fascinated by the Polish relationship with Jews, and more so by the lingering remnants of eyebrow-raising behaviour that is sometimes exhibited by otherwise progressive, very clever and well-educated people.

Language / Polish Language Exchange Thread [133]

If I wanted to say "So you need English for your job?" in Polish, my (admittedly basic) attempt would be:

"A więc potrzebujesz języka angielskiego w tej pracy?"

If I was rushing, I might say:

"Czy musisz mowić po angielsku być informatikiem?"

I'm sure I've made loads more errors than Lyzko - I just want to learn how to communicate with people in everyday speech- I don't use "therefore and "ergo" in my casual spoken English so I wouldn't want to try to in Polish.

Lyzko, you seem like more of a man of letters, so maybe you're looking to portray that in the Polish you use?

Mateusz, are you following- or have we bored you with Dickinson and cricket?

This forum is for those who are looking for someone to exchange details with in order to learn Polish language. It is NOT a message board, so if you ( and other posters ) want to chat, please use the PM function. Thanks.

Language / Polish Language Exchange Thread [133]

Well, I'm still impressed, Lyzko! I'm a long way off that level.
I don't blame the Germans for not reading Dickinson, though; she's not my cup of tea either. As for Grass and Böll, I won't pretend I've heard of them - they sound more like nouns used by cricket commentators than authors' names, to my ear. What brought you to studying Polish?

Siema Mateusz,

I'm looking to learn Polish and I'm happy to join in with these guys to help you work on your English.

I'm an English guy living in England with a Polish girlfriend.

Lyzko - I'm impressed; I don't know anyone who isn't Polish whose Polish is so good that it's easier for them to speak to Poles in Polish (there're a lot of Poles in that sentence!).

UK, Ireland / Moving to Cambridge - advice needed on Polish shops, church and community? [4]

Thanks for the help, Pam!

I've had a look online at what shops there are, and it looks like there's a big Polish community in Cambridge.

What I'm really looking for is someone living in the area who can give in-depth advice on the city and neighbourhoods.

Thanks again.

In case this thread becomes relevant to anyone else, I just wanted to update it to say that there are plenty of Polish shops in Cambridge, and the supermarkets all stock lots of Polish food, so my girlfriend doesn't run the risk of getting homesick!

Apparently there is a large Polish population here, and I hear Polish spoken on the street almost every day. Cambridge seems like a cool place so far.

Language / Can anyone recommend an app that has a good number of Polish verbs conjugated? [7]

I've found that good Polish language apps are pretty hard to come by, but I could have missed them.

The best Polish language book that I bought is Polski dla Obcokrajowców - it's the foundation of my (very amateurish) Polish language learning. You should check it out - learning using a book works better for me than apps, but that's a personal thing, I guess.

Writing out verb tables helps them stick in my head.

If you google 'Polish Grammar in a Nutshell', you can find a really in-depth .pdf that goes through all the basic and not-so basic facets of Polish grammar. It's pretty good for when you want to melt your brain a little.

Good luck!

UK, Ireland / Moving to Cambridge - advice needed on Polish shops, church and community? [4]

Witam,

My girlfriend and I will be moving to Cambridge within the next month as I have managed to get a job in the city.

We don't know much about the city other than how expensive the rental properties seem to be.

Can anyone give us any advice about the city and the best places to aim to live?

My girlfriend is Polish and we're both keen to live near Polish shops and the Polish church (I'm more interested in the Polish restaurant but we can compromise). It'd be great to get in touch with the Polish community in Cambridge so that we both felt at home.

Any tips about 'man with a van' or other moving services would be much appreciated, too.

Z gory dziękujemy
