Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Amathyst

Here's one. Ok, I am very good friends with a couple from Poland. I have helped them massively this last year with English etc. Last week I was invited to go a small family church service. When we got settled in our pews, my Polish mate gave me his camera and said 'You take pictures'. I had no idea I was going to be the photographer and was a little flummoxed, but I made no complaint and politely agreed. I'm no professional photographer .. only point and shoot (so to speak). I took what I thought a great series of photographs. ... and here's the crunch...

I spoke to my mate yesterday to be told 'I will get you, the photographs were very bad' I said 'really', he replied 'yes, very very bad'. You did not take enough pictures of the [his] kids.'

I know this may sound blunt, but I wasn't quite happy with his conversation, and told him what he said was rude. He then turned it on me, by saying I was too sensitive and that in future he will not 'joke' with me. He wasn't joking. I really do like this couple - indeed they have an open door policy and am always welcome in their home (and am always fed!!). I feel very confused now= perhaps over reacting?

What does everyone else think here? I can see somewhere in the future, we may (unfortunately) sever contact -- just down to miscommunication on both parts.

Travel / Travelling from Rzeszów to Szczecin [7]

Hello all,
I need a little bit of travel advice please. I am off to Poland in January 2014 (for 8 days) to visit friends in Rzeszów. I have since been invited to Szczecin (way away in the North West), by more friends. It's proving very difficult to arrange a 'hassle-free' journey. I was thinking first of all of taking a domestic flight from R to S but found out I need to change at Krakow. I then thought of the coach. But that only goes as far north as Poznan. Last but not least is the train. Could I buy a direct train from R to S on the day of travel, or is it recommended to book in advance.... Here's my problem.. Would you all do a 15+ hour journey across Poland? Is this the norm? Please don't think I'm naive here, but I'm just trying to step back and consider the choices. What does everyone think?

Thanks all. :0)

Language / Beginning to learn Polish- help? [29]

Hi I have been learning Polish for a few years. I have many Polish friends and do think the best way to learn is by talking to native Poles. I have a very very good book 'PoPolsku 1'. Unfortunately this book is entirely in Polish, but does a very good job in taking you through the 7 cases. I have had to ask my mates to give me more than enough help using this book, and does take perserverance.

Last year I decided to take GCSE Polish, but unfortunately got a grade D. :-( In my writing part the majority of my nouns and adjectives were written in the nominative!!!!!! oh dear!

Having said that, perservere with learning this rich and wonderful language. Powodzenia! (Good luck).

UK, Ireland / Polish Qualified Electricial transferable skills to UK? [9]

Does anyone know how to 'transfer' skills from Poland to UK. My mate is a Polish-qualified electrician (obtained in Poland), now living in the UK. Rather than study again in the UK (for the UK recognised qualification), can he somehow transfer his skills so he can work as a Certified Electrician in the UK (using his Polish-obtained qualification)? Hope that makes sense?
