Genealogy / Oczkowicz - Anyone here from Zagorzany or the area? / Kandefer [8]

Hello,

I am doing some research on my dad's side. I have gotten as far as my great grandparents coming over in 1901-1902 from Zagorzany. Wondering if anyone from the area is familiar with the name Oczkowicz. It has changed a little since then, but that was the spelling when they departed from Bremen Germany to the US over 100 years ago. Thank you.

Name and nationality don't have much in common.

Thanks. I needed to hear this. I've been obsessing about my nationality a bit since a very recent discovery of a different spelling of my last name and a 1902 ship manifest showing ethnicity of Ruthenian. So true and so well put. Thanks again.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4501]

Hello,

I have lots of questions regarding some of the history of my family coming to the US in 1901-1902 from Poland with regard to politics, name changes and ethnicity. I will have to address those in the correct forums, though. However, with regard to the meaning of my last name....it appears the true spelling is Oczkowicz. Any thoughts on what that means? A polish doctor I work with told me it had something to do with eyes. Thanks very much.
