Tracy, there is a big difference between usd and pounds, exchange is 1,6 usd to 1pound so 500 pounds might be ok, while 400 usd will be a lot less. And all this may be true as far as help of parents or friends with kids go, but Polish men are not very keen to support somebody elses child. She might have a live out boyfriend but chances for more are limited. Yes, surely having 400 usd is better than having nothing and yes, some people live on such salary for a month but what sort of life is that? Are you freaking mad????? 400/500 pounds (usd even less!) does not go far enough to warrant disappearance of a mother from a decent father. Woman who does something like that does not do it for money. For whatever reason she does not want to be with the father of the child, but the child still has right to maintenance. The mother could have perfectly good reason to do this - yes, the guy has rights, but he actually needs to move his a** and do something about his rights.

If the child is yours - yes, you do have to give her money for the child. This is law. I t doesn't matter that she left.

What I wonder however is WHY 28 week pregnant women buys 1-way ticket and leaves the father behind?

Yes - you are right here, but the issue is that he now has to take care of this part. I'm not sure if he actually wants to raise the child, but he should have some visitation rights regardless. If the women used him as a "sperm bank" then she shouldn't now ask for money, if she is asking for money she should allow him to see the kid.

No - it couldn't have been. The Cyrillic script has only been developed after X century (and made popular even later, something like XII century). Before Cyrillian script was developed, Cyril and Methodius developed Glagolitic script - which was based on Greek script (although some of the characters are taken from Oriental scripts: Hebrew, Samaritan and Coptic)

Texts in Glagolitic are apparently the oldest written Slavic texts.
Glagolitic probably wouldn't have even been introduced on the territory of Poland (due to being formally developed only in IX century) as Poland took Christianity from Rome (with the Latin script) in X century and the oldest scripts found are Latin.

Good - at least we understand each other here. The big issue is that marriage doesn't guarantee that the "multiple commitments" won't happen (not even talking about affair as this usually does not imply commitment, but a child out of wedlock does).


You seem to distinguish only the two types or relationships - no commitment or marriage. It is perfectly possible to be in fully committed, monogamous relationship, house and kids together without being married. As long as kids are brought up in a steady, happy home with two parents they won't know the difference. There is much more to commitment than marriage (but yes, I agree - you need sense of commitment to get married).

My mom did and she said that the proof of the origin of funds may be required (although not always requested), as well as that I will have to give my mom special authorization so that she can sign documents in my place (called Apostile or something like that), which has to be signed by notary and government authorized official (who I still have to find...), but apparently Polish Consulate should be able to provide the list.

This is apparently because a flat is not only an asset but a liability so you can't just buy a flat for somebody (or make them co-owners) without them formally agreeing or participating in the process. It makes sense, but it all seems like a bit of pain in the a** so I might just give my portion to my mom as "darowizna" as far as i know this is not taxable between first tier family members (but I might be wrong).

I live in South Africa - proving the origin of money is not an issue, I work legally, the only problem is that it takes ages to get any sort of tax or government paper in South Africa...

I think tax return would be easiest, but I do mine on-line so would probably need to have one certified. And here one trip to tax office = one trip to hell...

The transfer would be done from my bank account in Poland, into which I transfer money from time to time, the value of property is not big (200-250 000 PLN) and I would be financing probably 50-80 000. I know that there are some taxes associated with transfer (like everywhere I guess) and the notary services, but not sure if there is anything else.

But I did not talk about normal and functioning marriage/relationship. The post was about "patologia" in Poland. Kids are given stable environment by responsible parents - the "patologia" is far from being responsible, therefore nothing would change if they got married.

Absolutely - I cannot agree more!
This is a serious concern. But there are ways of sorting things out before they happen - the best is to draw Will to regulate such issues. Here in South Africa, even if you are married you still need Will to execute your rights, hereditary law is not very good and takes ages to execute (the fact that you can legally have more than one wife does not make it easier), that's why almost everyone has Will.

Money is not just a piece of paper. If it was, you wouldn't be able to buy anything for it (or at least very, very little). In fact you don't need the PAPER at all to buy things. This is only proving my point that this is the meaning behind the paper that is more important than the paper itself.

There are different reasons why people don't want that paper - often it's failed marriage already (where the paper brought more trouble for one party than lack of the paper ever would have). Sometime is a fear. Sometimes you may be right - lack of commitment. Sometimes people don't want to "fix" if there is no problem. If both parties are happy without the paper why would they want to change things? Marriage in the registry office or church is a contract. Some people need it to feel secure, some don't. Morals have nothing to do with this. Do you think a marriage where husband and wife cheat on each other is better that committed relationship of two people who are together because they want to be, don't risk the happiness through cheating on each other?

Sukali - Poland is no different than any other European country in terms of safety for tourists.
You are probably going to be safer in countryside than in big cities, people are generally very friendly towards tourists.
I probably wouldn't go as far as camper-van (simply because I don't know how good are the facilities, but I'm sure you can check this on the internet) but there is other accommodation available (most popular is guest rooms - "pokoje goscinne").

Hotels, unless you go for the known chains are not the best.
Keep an eye on your luggage though, there is a lot of petty theft in Poland. No valuables in general bus storage, make sure you have certified copies of your documents - usual stuff really. Hiring a car is a good option, but roads are not so good and you will need to drive left hand drive :) If you are OK with that, hire a car rather than use buses, much more comfortable if you have big luggage. If you stick to backpack/small suitcase, buses and trains are OK (don't stay alone in a train compartment though, rather choose one with few respectively looking people in there already).
