Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

Because we celebrate Christmas Eve. It's not a Polish thing, it's a Catholic thing.

In Belgium we also celebrate on Christmas Eve.

UK, Ireland / Polish is an official language in the UK? [68]

We don't get that in Warsaw, or at least in central Warsaw, I wouldn't know about the suburbs. I haven't notice them outside supermarkets in east or south-east Poland either.

I have never been to Warsaw before, I was talking about Gdynia, Rumia and Reda.

As for the sign which is the subject of this thread, perhaps the number of person being picked up for this offence in the area who were Polish and claimed that public urination is completely acceptable in Poland

Yes you are right there Harry, this sign was near the entrance of a park, and there are quite a lot of homeless people staying or sleeping there, most of them were Polish.

Talking about that, one thing I do not understand is why are there so many Poles homeless in Brussels and London. I mean why would they leave Poland if it's to be homeless abroad? They are often middle-aged or more, here in Brussels you find them in and outside the train stations such as Gare du Midi. And there are also quite a lot of Polish homeless begging outside big supermarkets here in Brussels, I often buy 'em tobbaco and have a little chat with the ones haging around the Carrefour near my house. but this I saw in Poland as well, most the big supermarket I have been in Poland had beggars outside.

Polonia / Looking for Poles in Brussels, Belgium. [19]

In any case I do not have any tendency to insult anybody. After all if you do not like a place you just leave. As I did. Even you as a Belgian you admit that things are not so calm. In any case since as I told you my gf is Polish I met with several Polish people in Brussels. Mostly students and Interns in companies or EU institutions.

I do not have any Polish acquaintances working in EU institutions or studying, I was talking about the poles I see walking down the streets, those doing manual work, like most of them do here. I guess I have to go out to some polish pubs around here to meet people. I don't drink much so rarely go down the pub...

:-)

It may have escaped your notice but the UK has about 45 million more inhabitants than little old Belgium.

lol, I was thinking the same when I first saw the statistics he put up there.

I am Belgian, and I am adamant when I say Brussels is not as safe as London, and it's not policed properly like someone else mentioned. Anyway, hwdp! :)

yes I've seen it in the Liege Guillemin area but never went in it, I always see that Polish pub when on my way to Maastricht.

Peace!

True, Brussels isn't as safe as London or other places, but I myself live in Schaerbeek and I love it. Knowing some arabic can help if you live around here, I grew up with Moroccans that helps too.

Peace and thanx for all your replies!

I can't wait to be in Kashubian territory on the 24th!

Polonia / Looking for Poles in Brussels, Belgium. [19]

Hi there,
I'm a 30 years old Belgian guy, I moved to London, England in 2000 aged 19 and spent 10 years there, where I've made many Polish friends, true friends!

I am now again living in Brussels, it's been a year and half already...
I find it hard to meet and befriend polish people here, in London it was the opposite. The reason I think it's because the ones that live and work in Belgium aren't as open-minded as those in London, most of the time they don't speak a word of French or Dutch, which makes it difficult to socialise.

Well if You're Polish and want to hang out, go for a (Belgian) beer maybe improve your French or Dutch with me so you'll help me improve my Polish. just let me know!

Peace!

Travel / New Year in Tricity, Poland [9]

Merged: Where to party for New Years Eve In The Tricity area?

Hi,
I have been to Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot, Rumia and the Kashubian region before, So I kind of know my way around.
Im going back on the 24th of December for 10 days.
My problem is tht the friend where I normally stay at will not be home till the 29th so Ill be on my own, I booked a hostel in Gdansk for 5 nights, I hope I will find some shops open on the 24th so i can eat and drink at the hostel....?

My friend can not come and party on new year's eve because his wife don't let him... So I am looking for a cool party for New Year's, not techno, hardcore or rock, I hate that, I enjoy Drum n bass, HipHop, Dubstep, funk and reggae.

If You wanna hang out with me, let me know, I speak English, French and some Dutch, but I wanna improve my basic polish.

Peace!
