News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Btw - PKW states we would have partial results (30% of votes counted) right after midnight so in 1-2 hours. I think I will have sleepless night today ;)

We will see how reliable are exit polls this year ;)

I am happy, but I hope that it would few few % more for PO and few % less for PiS and RP. I would be happy if PO could have majority alone, but PSL would not be that bad too (I found it ok over the last 4 years).

I voted PO and now I keep my fingers crossed for my candidate, no. 4 in the list in my voting region :)

if PiS is so very socialist

Conservative socialists you mean? ;)

SLD is left-sided socialism, which is much more up-to-date than PiS's one. SLD have much more of ideas that are actually possible to make. PiS have some idoeas too, but I treat them as science fictin. They already promissed they will build 3 millions of new flats...

PO is the most popular probably because it has something from PiS and PO together, plus they don't make a lot of things that would put voters off them :)

Law / 1 euro = 4,46637049 złotego polskiego [21]

NBP shows average prices between buy and sell.

I think EUR could go up to 5 PLN soon, but if it reaches such level, will fall down. Honestly I am not sad, I am paid in EUR :P

Predictions? Well...

PO - 39%
PiS - 31%
SLD - 15%
PSL - 9%

PSL will get many votes because they are no Samoobrona anymore who would steal their votes from village area. PO-PSL again is highly possible, I would prefer PO-SLD though. PiS will unfortunately gain a lot of votes from fanatics and these who believe them. RPP (Ruch Poparcia Palikota) has few percent in polls, but I doubt if they get more than 2%.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

the majority of Poland's population right now grew up during communist times?

That is why I wrote "a bit" in my message. We still have a lot of time to change our mentality completely. It is not like we can be Western country from day to day, but comparing to, let's say 15 years ago, we have changed drastically. I would rather say that those who are over 60 years of age cannot adjust to modern times, but these who are over 40 surely can. We speak foreign languages (not only Russian as it was before), we spend more money on things like shopping, entertainment, technology, we go on holidays abroad etc. We are much closer to Western Europeans than you think.

Ok, I am 25, but I see a lot of changes in my parents behaviour, their purchasing power, their hobbies, leisure etc. They are both 52. All has changed rapidly over the past few years.

News / Let us save Poland. Suggestions [40]

I have a feeling that someone still thinks that Polish people are ones who are living in wooden houses with no electricity and these who have it much be veeeery rich ;)

Of course, poverty exists, but show me at least one country with no single family living in poor conditions. It is impossible to find one.

I strongly support our EU accession, because without that we would never develop so fast. We have a lot of money from EU.
I don't support NATO that much, but NATO itself is not a problem for me ;)

About journalism - media in Poland are controlled by media groups mostly, Polish people are informed very well (if we don't want to use one channel we can switch to another one, every "general" channel has its own news services). We also have plenty of daily newspapers and magazines.

I am proud of my country, I think we are modern Europeans, we have a lot of people with higher education and they want to learn more (like me, with higher education, but working and studying for another degree) :) Younger people are really Western, older - more Eastern European. We have our own values, our traditions, but every country has them.

To sum up, let us stay as we are now :)

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Central. For a few reasons: EU biggest eastern borders are between Poland and Ukraine/Belarus, plus I think our mentality is a bit more Western than Eastern.

News / Lithuanian reality show - lost Polish sponsorship, criticized by Lithuanian Army [20]

Regarding Punsk. Local Lithuanians decided to remove the signs in Lithuanian. There were too many acts of vandalism, local people are scared. Also they have a lot of problems with education: Lithuanian textbooks aren't confirmed by state (also they aren't funded by state as it is in Lithuania), schools get closed...

Really not true here. I live 20 km from them so I know what is here (I was there last weekend...).

Lithuanian signs are there, as they were before. Secondary school with Lithuanian language of teaching exists, noone wants to close it - Polish governors can close only these schools which are unattended (in Puńsk there are over 100 students there). This is the only secondary school with Lithuanian language of teaching in whole Poland. Lithuanian people teach there. Also gimnasium is in Puńsk as well. Books which are used are confirmed by local authorities and Ministry of Education. They are all in Lithuanian language.

People in Puńsk organise a lot of events to show Lithuanian Culture, they have Lithuanian Culture House etc. Noone forbids them to show their Lithuanian origin. Also just today they were all together to clean what has been ruined by vandals. They are not scared - they are just disgusted of what happened (the same goes with people in Eisiskes in Lithuania). I am disgusted as well (both for these in Puńsk and these in Eisiskes).

If media in Lithuania say what you wrote, believe me - this is really not true.

Food / Moving to Poland - Culinary Concerns and Food Markets Availability? [15]

First of all nice you chose Poland :)

For Italian food herbs would be no problem. For Indian or Mexican, you should bring as much of spices as you can from US. You could find spices in specialised stores (I don't live in Warsaw but many big cities would have such shops), I am not sure about their quality though.

For milk - in every middle supermarket you will find Soya Milk in "healthy food" alley. You can also try to search for Rice Milk. I saw it in Carrefour market once, but I am not sure if it is also available in other big markets (like Tesco or Real).

Could you please tell me - do you have laws saying that there cannot be other language signs in any place when some majority is from one minority? I am not saying only about Polish minority here, but also about the others.

In Poland we have laws appreciating minorities and their national beliefs and that is why we have Puńsk/Punskas not only Puńsk for example :)

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

What my dad told me today was that they have never been taught to use this "old" language at schools, however they had teachers who used that version of languages (older teachers, born at the beginning of 20th century). So in 1960s - it surely wasn't existing as normal language.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Sticking to original question: I think we are not... unless someone is rude to us. At least this is for me. When someone is nice to me, I am nice to him/her too. If someone is not, sorry, but I will either ignore this person or won't be nice.

Few days ago, some article appeared saying that 85% of Polish people live in stress - in Polish if anyone wants to have a look). This may be a reason why sometimes you feel that someone in the shop, on the phone etc. is rude to you (these poll said that 15% that don't feel stress are mostly people over 50 years of age, pensioners or unemployed people). I understand such people because I work with Polish clients as customer service person for 5 years now. Now I am happy from my job, but in the past I had a bad boss and plenty of clients who did not understand something and blamed for everything etc. Stressful life did not make it easy for me and sometimes I was rude too. Another thing is that customer service people are not paid well so they are annoyed that they are coping with a lot of stress, work a lot of hours a day (sometimes people in cash desks work for like 12 hours a day or more), and can't afford to live a normal life because of their salaries. I think if you met such people when they are, for example, on holidays, you would see they are much nicer than at work :)

As many as 85 per cent of Poles feel daily stress and anxiety. In this group, 60 percent . people are trying to unload it , but not always in a way that is beneficial to health - studies have shown TNS presented Tuesday in Warsaw.

The survey , "How Poles care about the heart" was conducted on 16-19 June at the request of Bayer on a representative sample of 1000 people aged at least 18 years of age. The results were presented at a press conference " Heart Academy ."

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

you know, I'm actually curious as to which point of time following the war, did the accent actually change, or start changing, and how it became nation-spread.

It's very hard to say, but I think this could change right after WWII. My parents were born in 1960 and 1959 respectivelly and I am pretty sure they were taught modern Polish (of course not as modern as now) since they were in primary school. I will visit them tommorow, so if I don't forget, I will ask them :)

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

It's very, very, very rare. But in my region (North-East, Suwalszczyzna) some older people use something which could be called in the past "artistic language". They don't use normal "ł" like in modern language but they use something between "l" and "ł". But it is probably the only thing that has been left from pre-war times. My grandma used it for her whole life and she died just 2 years ago. She was taught this way, but she was 89 years old, so when modern times came, she was already a very mature woman. You can mostly hear this from people who are in their 80s now and were living in Suwalszczyzna or Podlasie for their whole life.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Well, I only heard that PiS it trying to look "cool and jazzy" (exact quote here ;) ), but people asked on the streets said "no way, they are not" :D What annoys me about them is that they promise, but don't give exact ways to realize their promises. I will give you this, this or this is their typical campaign.

I am 25, and actually I never voted for them and I never will. They have discredited themselves many times in the past. I am pretty sure that they will get a good result (probably polls are right here and they will be no.2), but it is because young people are not voting, instead of using their possibility to change something. I am also sure that once again, in my region, PiS will win because of "old" voters which is majority.

Also I think that the reason of possible voting for PiS by younger people is that Polish people are generally not satisfied with their level of life. So "empty promises" would work for them. We'll see on October 9th, I can't wait to see what would happen.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Yesterday, when surfing youtube, I saw PiS advertisements embedded into films and clips. Don`t you think it is unfair?

I don't find it unfair, they bought such ads on youtube, they have right to do so. It's only annoying to close those commercials while I am going to youtube all the time. They want to appeal to younger voters, but because of what they did over last few years, how bad they were in making their promises realized, constant refering to Smoleńsk...they won't get young people to vote for them.

I know I will vote for PO on 9.10, I hate when governments switch every few years. PO have long-term plans to develop Poland and I am satisfied from them being in charge of our country :) None of my friends vote for PiS, they choose either PO or SLD.
