UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [128]

The Polish invasion of 2004 was the biggest mistake the British government has made in a very long time. Keeping wages down, by , siphoning money out of the UK economy back to Poland, taking jobs from hard-working working class Brits like myself, They have taken 50 % of construction jobs in my area since 2004.

UK, Ireland / We live in the UK; my husband is not legal in England [47]

I had no problem with Poles here in the UK before the invasion of 2004, a few 10,000s was barely noticeable and they tended to integrate (especially the War Poles) into wider British society. But the sheer volume of low skilled immigration in such a short space of time was a mistake, it has kept wages from rising over the last 7 years in certain sectors such as construction and plumbing, it has put financial strain on British plumbers. builders, mechanics bricklayers, painter/decorators whose work Poles will do for half the money.

How would you feel if a million low-played working class Brits came to Poland in a matter of two years?

PS I don't hate Poles I just think the UK should have put up immigration quotas like all the other EU countries.

Poles literally never crossed my mind before 2004. The only Pole I ever saw was before 2004 was Telegraph pole at the end of my street and the cool guy from the great escape.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

everyone here in England sees Poles as Eastern Europeans. Central European is a term only used by the Guardian or left wing papers.

I have more in common with a Dutchman or an Irishman than a Pole, I see the Dutch as very culturally similar to us. You have more in common with Russia than with England or even Germany culturally.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

sorry my mistake even the guardian refers to Poles as Eastern European:

Poland is now the second highest in this table (behind India) with 503,000 people. In 2004 it wasn't in the top 60.

guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/apr/29/eastern-european-immigration-uk-general-election

Russia is neither Europe nor Asia, if you exclude European Russia, then you are still pretty Eastern.

People sometimes talk about 'Russia's relations with Europe'. ie Russia is neither Europe nor Asia. Poland is in the East of Europe. stop getting so damn touchy about it.

Their so fricking laaaazy!! It annoys me like hell!!!!

get over it, we do the same thing in the uk

You are aware that "Europe" in this sentence is a mental leap for European Union? You can also in such context say "Switzerland relations with Europe"...

Here is zhirinovsky saying 'Russia stands between Europe and Asia'.

All these sources refer to Poland as Eastern Europe:

You are in Eastern Europe on the borders of Russia. they are your ethnic brethren so embrace your Slavic roots and do not be ashamed of being from Eastern Europe.

Byelorussia = White Russia, they all speak Russian there, only a minority speak the White Russian dialect. Belarus is an artificial creation only a matter of time before Russia re-unites with Belarus.

Handsome can still be used to refer to women, its just a bit old fashioned, but is still sometimes used in the literary sense.

Yes...well...There's a fine line between lunacy and its contrast. Whether it runs horizontally or vertically, from a global perspective it's circular, eventually.

who one earth said I hate Eastern Europeans? I have a great fondness and respect for Eastern European culture. spasiba

No you take the Pakistanis, Arabs and Somalis and Nigerians, please from here please. I don't mind Chinese or Japanese or east Asian people never seem to cause any problems or try and demand special treatment from the host population.

UK, Ireland / 50 babies a day born to Polish mothers in UK [81]

In the main they will contribute to the UK in a positive way. As did their great-grandfathers.

Not sure that's actually true. Most of the Poles post 2004 don't really integrate into wider British society, they generally keep to themselves. Unlike the War Poles that did integrate, the recent migrant. have not really integrated into British society.

Give them a little more time.

It's not just about time, the wider point I'm trying to make is that when people come gradually in small numbers from a similar culture like say the Irish to Britain, they tend to completely assimilate, but when a single group of people from a different culture move in overwhelming numbers in a short space of time then they tend to congregate together, take for example the Mexicans in California, there is a parallel with post 2004 Polish immigration.

When there is already a large immigrant community present then a new immigrant would tend to be absorbed by them as opposed to the wider culture, for instance, if I went as an Englishman moved to Mongolia tomorrow , I would have no choice other than to speak Russian or Mongolian and would be forced to integrate with the local population , but if a Mexican moved to southern California tomorrow he could spend his entire life simply talking Spanish and eating living much the same way he would in mexico.

I blame Tony Blair and his absurd open door immigration policy. had we had immigration caps than we would not have been overwhelmed by so many people in such a short space of time.

Britain is full up.
