Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

I find it the other way around-I like many Polish people, but the society does have some annoying aspects, but then again I feel the same about my own country when I am home so maybe I'm the one with the problem.

Life / Izabela? - Advice with Polish name for a girl [36]

I still don't see why you can't just give the kid a name that works in both languages, there certainly are plenty. You can still have a name that's easy to pronounce and still have the exotic factor too.

Life / Izabela? - Advice with Polish name for a girl [36]

Thanks for understanding. We really want something that shows some heritage and could even be an interesting conversation starter one day.

Yes, but why can't you have an interesting name that at least has letters that can be relatively pronounced correctly in both languages? My wife is Ewa and she always has to correct people. Why can't you choose something like Kornelia or Helena, which can sidestep this issue?

Life / Izabela? - Advice with Polish name for a girl [36]

Why would you give your child a name that you know she is going to have people asking her how to say it? I am American and my wife is Polish, and we named our kids Aleksander and Helena because they are work in both English and Polish.

Life / Television in Poland - embarrassingly bad? [44]

My favorite Polish program is "Usterka", which only seems to be on in the middle of the night. It's very original and I have never seen anything like it.

Study / Polish language classes in Poland, advice needed! [7]

I studied in the school in Sopot on two occasions and had a good experience both times. That was 15 years ago, so I don't know what I can really say about it now, but Sopot is lovely in the summer. Just watch out for the accommodation they may set you up with. I ended up staying with a widower and she was wonderful. She had a nice house in Gdansk-Oliwa, which is just a short commuter-train ride away from the school. Some of my classmates got put in awful housing blocks. Oh I am being melancholy now about my time there.

UK, Ireland / Raising Bilingual Children - How are you teaching your children? Your experiences? [74]

I am a native speaker of English and my wife is Polish. Our 7 and 4-year-old speak Polish and English beautifully. We are in a third country and the kids go to an English-speaking school. My question is not how to motivate my kids to learn Polish, but how to motivate my wife to work on it with them. I don't want them to go back to Poland and have to ask their cousins how to read a menu and write simple things. My wife is always just too 'busy'.

Real Estate / Residential real estate values go down in Poland [455]

My own personal definition of 'bubble' is my story. Raced to get something in 2007, because I thought we'd be priced out. Spent more than I wanted. Then everything cools off and my property is worth less than when I bought it. Now we want to leave Poland, but can't sell the damn thing without losing our *ss. Yes, I know you're thinking that I deserve it for being so stupid, but there was a lot of emotion in decisions being made, and not only by us.

Love / Indian citizen wants to marry Polish Girl and get settled there. [107]

Man, one thing is for sure; the Internet brings out the worst in people, or maybe just the worst people. This poor guy just asks for advice and he gets abuse hurled at him like schmidt on a brick wall. I've noticed this on Yahoo as well.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

Yeah, I must admit that I've only been to Trader Joe's once. Talkin' out of my bung hole.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

let's not forget about Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, they're almost exclusively organic now.

I know that those places have high-quality food, but I can just see all the labels now: "Organic", "Low Fat", "Healthy".

Yes, I know there is plenty of fruit and veg, but so many people eat boxed food.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

One thing is for sure; food is freaky in the States. My Polish wife, kid and I are moving there in 2012 and we are concerned about the food. We are going to have a 'fresh food only' rule. Too much of the food there is processed and full of chemicals. My wife very poignantly put it the first time she ate in a restaurant there "All this food is from a box."

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

(we dont have horrid teeth either, this is just a myth!)

This is not meant to be nasty, but a large proportion of the Brits I have known after living in Europe for 12 years have pretty grungy teeth. Mostly it's the smokers I must admit.

Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

I had four fillings while living in Poland and have had to have all four replaced since leaving. Yes, cheap. Good, not necessarily.

Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

Never saw a kid with black teeth in my life until I came to Poland. I don't know if it's a lack of oral hygiene or the extreme amount of sugar kids are allowed to eat. Probably both.
