Life / Exam for Drivers License in Poland; English? [99]

I talked to a lot of people that passed there test here and most said they paid a bribe, thats why they overtake on a hill corner with double white lines in the center, aparently a bottle of vodka is the norm but if you fancy it free take a tape recorder. Not that im against this kind of freedom just tell me so i can get a tank if im coming in the other direction.

There are plenty of opportunities in Poland if you take time to think things through, you don't just have to be an English teacher.

Too right.

because I want to stay in England

This is gonna be your biggest problem as things will never quite measure up to you Idealised vision of how things could be in GB. As was my first time living here, I got homesick.

The question youve gotta ask yourself is why, and if the things can be counted on one hand, come/go.

What are the chances to find work for me ?

finding good work is a lot harder than setting yourself up, outside big cities anyway. Hit the ground running if you can itll be a lot easier.

Work / is 2500zl a fair enough wage for on average 50 hours a week (Poland)? [22]

2500zl a month for around 50 hours

Spot on wage for labouring, 10zl hr cash is right for strong drunks so he obviously thinks higher of you, im paying the same hourly 12 for the labours ive got and theyre keen semi skilled nondrinkers, have heard of firms paying 5/6 for village lads, sometimes not paying at all. If your gonna stay might be worth taking a plastering corse in the uk. (couple of days) as they havent caught on to wet plastering here yet.(still scraping away for hours) you can bang a room out in half the time and earn twice the ammount (still nowhere near uk plastering price hence no competition) . good luck

(in demand)

is that why you moved

News / Should government monitor the net in Poland? [38]

They turn a blind eye on worthless sarcastic comments which only clutter the forums...

Sarcastic comments worthless! not if they teach ignorant haters about themselves, thus eliminating the need for us to pay for prisons, just cos someone doesnt like someone else. UP WITH SARCASM.

News / Should government monitor the net in Poland? [38]

Thankfully freedom of speech laws are strong in the jurisdiction that this site is based...

would you care if they wern't?

Wonder if theyll enforce this the same way as speeding fines, ie if you say it wasnt you they cant do anything.(so ive been told anyway)

Life / Why Polish people should be proud of being Polish? [370]

What in your view then is an indciator of a country's greatness, excellence, promienence and international renown?

I still dont see how having the most of.. or being the most powerfull country etc. determines pride. Is a man who against all adversity manages to do something, no matter how small under the eyes of scrutiny, not allowed to feel pride.

Life / Why Polish people should be proud of being Polish? [370]

whats the connection between Patents, production and pride. (apart from them begining with p) Maybee americans can only equate pride by how big, expensive, inventive or productive something is. under negative scrutiny nothing is ever going to be good enough.

News / Polish Lithuanian Diplomatic War? At last. [533]

Ive just got back from holiday in lit. and found only a very small percentage of (nice) young people spoke english so we had to speak polish to get/do stuff. You could tell by the dryness of their attitudes that the didnt really want to. But happily spoke russian. I really have no idea why they joined the EU apart from developement funds, taking money from people you dont like isnt how a proud nation acts.

Real Estate / Building a house in Poland need advice from anyone that has built [100]

Hiya Sue. Im in Elblag just the other end of the canal from you. Its provincial and cheap like Olsztjn. Ive just handed over the building of my house, to a small firm today, and they are gonna finnish off for me to stan surowy. basically closed and roofed but not finished(no money up front). This has to be done before the winter as breez blocks blow apart in frost(the big crate bricks dont). By the time id got permission it was half way through the summer, so me and my wife couldnt have got finnished. we built massive foundations 2.2m (on a hill) each block 25kg,50 ton total. got a bit of help after that from two part time firemen and got to lintels , I was stubbornly against it cos it was my everest. but if your working with em... Put an ad in village, No Drinkers.

What Im trying to say is Do it;
The most important ive found so far are;

The land must have A road and electric + water (piped water not a well)directly accessible from your plot (have the vendor agree to put services to the land in the contract) or you wont get the second permission, the first permissions mean nowt,(this is the mistake we made we thought we could start building and came to poland and had to wait) ie buying the land budowlana doesnt always get permission (normally yea)theyll tell what you can build so dont by plans till then(ready plans are about 2-3000zl)

Try and buy flat land and the adaptation of plans to the land by another arcitect will be cheaper + dont make changes.
do all the paper chasing in the winter and you may be able to do all the building yourselfs, but even if you cant good strong helpers are only 10zl/hr.

I recon a 100m2 house costs about 100,000 land, 100,000 stan, 150,00 finish doing it yourself add about 100,000 for labour if not.

Weve had a lovely expirience doing it , felt like a real prospector, but im glad i no longer have to live in a wooden hut, My wife dealt with the merchants and although she would never be regarded as builder she was most of the time treated great respect and kindness ,me even more so, yes you do feel some people ********** (all the way back to their comunist holes) but you get that when you do anything out of the norm, THE NORM FOR ENGLISH HERE IS TO BE A NATIVE SPEAKER AND SIT IN A BAR LORDING IT UP, like that fella with nowt nice to say.

Good luck
