I understand. I've done some further digging, and I've encountered two more names that I'd like to tell you about. One is Tabaj, and the other is Goral. I've also seen Rataj. Are these names Polish?

That's interesting. I took another look at the information, and this ancestor's grandparents are listed as Johann Folwarczného and Anny Kubeczkové (Kubeczkova?). Sounds like a combination of Polish and Czech?
When my ancestor was born, the city she was born in, Prostřední Suché (I've also seen Sucha Sredna), was in Austria-Hungary; today it's in the Czech Republic. Do you think these differences in spelling are the result of the differences in the Czech language?

I found the name in his granddaughter's birth records, so you're probably right. I got the information from the Opava Archives in the Czech Republic.

I'm also wondering about Gancarz and Jarosz. Szymika became Szymik at some point.

I think you're right. I looked at the original manifest, and it's an "e." Also, it was written last name first (Lucka, Wawrzyniec).

Here's an interesting one for you (or at least I think so):
My ancestor's name is John Lucka. He came to the US under the name Jan Lucki. On his St. Albans manifest, his father is listed as Lucka Wawrzyniac. Any idea why he would use his father's first name as his last name?
I haven't found his Canadian manifest yet, so I don't know if he arrived in Canada under Lucki or Wawrzyniac.

£UCKA: looks to be the fem. form of £ucki, a topo nick for an inhabitant of the city of £uck or environs. Since so many things have happened to names over the ages, teh Christian name £ukasz cannot be ruled out as a source, and £ucjan seems even more plausible.

Yes, I've been using Google's translator as well as the one on Dictionary.com. I think I haven't been specific enough. Of course, I'm only emailing because I didn't find anything about research requests on the Web site.
Right now I'm trying to identify his exact place of birth. There are numerous villages by the name of Tarnów and Rzeczyca.

To make a long story short, I haven't had much luck emailing churches and archives in Poland. (In other countries, I've gotten the information I needed simply by translating my request and sending an email.)
What is the best way to submit a research request? Is snail mail the best way? Is it laughable to even ask if payment is required in advance?
I'm interested specifically in the city of Tarnow.

How about the surname Lucka? I've never found any information about the origin of this name other than that it originates from the name Luke.
My ancestor came from Tarnow, Poland.
