USA, Canada / REFUSED A HOLIDAY VISA TO THE U.S CAUSE IM POLISH [323]

I had no idea it was that difficult to get a holiday visa to this country? HA, not laughing at you, just seems ironic with all the undocumented people here. Perhaps that is the reason.

Work / Salary, holidays - questions to employer during a job interview in Poland [47]

I'm still studying and I speak little polish...the job is connected with the italian market...I need to speak 90% of the time in Italian and the rest in Polish....what do u think ? too low salary ?

I would say aim high, that way they you are showing that you expect to be paid like someone who has that position or is an expert at that position. Harder to get up in pay once you are there, aim high to begin. If they like you, they will give it to you, or they will come back at a lower price. Either way you win.

Travel / Favorite places/Cities for Poles to travel to in Poland or around the world. [9]

what about it makes it that way?

My favorite place I have traveled is Algerho Italy. On the island of Sardinia. Food was the best I have ever had. Roast suckling pig, pasta, cheese, just amazing. I have never seen water so blue either...well besides the Caribbean. Definitely need to go back there.

USA, Canada / What do the Poles hate and love about the U.S.? [170]

My favorite are Science Fiction. I have been watching a lot of Polish films lately.
Pornografia, The Career of Nikos Dyzma two of my favorites so far. I'm sure those are the translated spellings but if anyone has any suggestions on what Polish films to watch let me know!

Zakopane or the New England States for skiing.

I have never been to Zakopane. Planning my first trip to Poland this year. My brother and I are taking my Father, he has not been for over 50 years. He still skis, so maybe that is something I need to think about. Poland in Winter, or Spring rather than Spring/Summer.

Torq,
I agree, 1950 Chevy is a great car, doesn't matter what model others like, it is what you like. My father had a 64' Corvette, that was awesome.

Food is great! Just go to good restaurants and not the chains. Tons of fresh fish, best beef in the world! You have to remember that there are all sorts of foods here, because there are all sorts of people here. Baseball is ok, but American Football is the best sport. only 16 games, strategy over power wins out most of the time. Love football.

Next time you're up that way, wander over into Vermont. It's absolutely gorgeous. Too bad all the liberal lowyas from NY & MA ruined that state. Geographically though, it's beautiful.

I am a skier, so while I like Vermont, I have always been more fond of Live Free or Die, New Hampshire, and You Cant Get There from Here, Maine.

Life / Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars? [217]

Any bans that lead to less smoking (in general) are a good thing, regardless of any initial pain suffered by pubs/clubs.

That and Cigs here are over $8-9USD. That is pretty expensive. Down South cigs are $3-4USD. We tax them up here in Taxachusetts (Massachusetts).

I'll tell you though, people still go to the bars and restaurants. As I said, many restaurants and bars opened outdoor seating and patios that are a BIG hit. So business will not suffer as much as you think.

The story of the food industry in the US is pretty amazing (in a terrible terrible way). Food Inc is a great flick on it.

That's a generalization though. You can choose to get food from different sources, you do not have to elect to get goods from sketchy wholesalers. I personally like grass fed beef, and organic maple syrup. However, I don't care how my veggies were grown. Choices, choices, choices.

pretty straightforward law regarding protection of the home.

That is until you actually do something like that and the court sides with the poor criminal. Think woman burning herself on McDonald's coffee and suing McDonald's because the coffee was too hot...

Massachusetts

Yea right in Massachusetts. Basically if someone breaks into YOUR house and hurts himself, he is likely to sue you and win in Massachusetts.

You gotta respect Texas and the Southern states for their laws about protecting yourself. They don't mess around.

work camp in upstate NY fairly soon.

Ill probably see Rip Van Winkle in the Catskills! I think he is still in those camps.

Speaking of Rip Van Winkle, if anyone LOVES Burbon Whiskey, and you can afford it, Pappy's Old Rip Van Winkle 20 year old Burbon is the best tasting Whiskey I have ever had...that is coming from a Scotch guy!

Lake George would be nice

Lake George is beautiful. Was up there this past fall for a wedding. Leaves were turning, bright sunny day. Can't beat that...except for the work camps of course.

In that none of that is true. Americans are voting the people in office, OUT of office right now because they haven't done what we have asked. That is the difference.

See Scott Brown in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is one of the most Liberal states in the US, but we voted a Republican in over a Democrat last month.

RonWest you are right. I can't walk down the street without being asked for my "papers." Wouldn't come here either. If you do, make sure you have your passport, and valid ID on you at all times.

Now even I recognize that this is a weeny step too far...

Yea that's a little crazy.
Some buildings you can't smoke within 200 yards, like hospitals. That makes sense i guess.
I guess you would have to read the condo rules and everything if you are a smoker and looking to buy a condo. Smoking bans are a good thing though. I know, I know, but it keeps your healthier, others healthier, and you don't smell like a cigarette after you go out to eat.

IN the US we have a ban on smoking inside any building, restaurant, bar, pub, whatever. Just went into effect 6 years ago for bars (pubs). Didn't affect the business. People just went outside to smoke. Then they created outside seating and you can smoke out there in the spring, summer, and fall with your meals. Added business because you can eat outside now. Just not in the winter.
