I get it. Indeed, it has nothing to do with the Polish grill. I was referring to what I saw on American films. It always looked like Polish "grill" with charcoal

Poles don't much like American Bar-B-Q (esp with marinated meat)

IT IS the same as Polish "grill" -"grill" being a Polish word here, measning a different thing than the English word. Polish "grill"=barbeque and yes, with marinated meat. We do it quite well, e.g. karkówka, yummy!

(soup made with blood)

and since we are talking about czernina, we should also mention kaszanka blood sausage (with groats)

I love Marmite, squid, instant mashed potatoes and love Mexican food. I cook and eat food more spicy than any average Pole could ever taste. as to the rest of things on the list -i totally agree.

Most my Polish friends drink both Whisky and Whiskey so I don't know why it's on your list. Maybe becuase of the girls?

I wonder how much willing are your Polish friends to try anything new and potentially dangerous? ;)
I generally try to avoid new stuff if I don't know what it is.

What about foreigners in Poland?
I would put on my list:

flaki (soup made of cow stomachs cut to pieces)
kapusta kiszona (sour cabbage)
smalec (greasy white thing with pieces of fried bacon we put on bread)
maślanka (hmmm)

Life / Are foreigners welcome in Poland? [267]

I confess that I sometimes stare(hope in discreet way) but its due to curiosity then malice.

discreet is the key word here. Shows sensitivity even if not achieved...

true
I don't like the staring -in the extend that happens here. Noticing a black person, even looking for awhile is ok... but not this kind of staring like at animal in the zoo.

Why you blame others for your discomfort?

Did I say I blamed anyone? I just said I couldn't get used to it. Like, for example, when we walked in the street one day -I was pregnant then and a guy drove buy staring from his car. I thought to myself "gee, I must be real big". It took me awhile to realise he wasn't staring at me.

I used to think that Poland was a "negative" place. I mean -people always see things from a negative point of view and complain about stuff. But being here makes me wonder -maybe all the world is like that?

Probably because there are very few black ppl in PL.

if there is no tollerance for blacks it must also reflect a general problem. Which means not only they will be the victim of Polish mentality, but also all of you, foreigners, here.

But it seems to be more of them in PL than in Sweden.

My husband went to Sweden and absolutely loved it. He didn't observe any "giraffe syndrome" there -in contrary to Poland. People seem to mind their own business there. Is that so?

Just because you chose to shack up with a negro

Is there a mod in da house?

as far as I'm concerned black people have very good lives in Polish villages. People have this strange approach -"he is OUR BLACK" and they will protect them like their own -as long as the foreigner WANTS TO assimilate. Staring is not disrespectful. But it sure is annoying for someone who doesn't see the difference.

I am not blind. Nor naive. I have eyes and ears and use them well. Not all Poland is the same. We're ok where I live.

Love / Can't get over "the Polish experience" [21]

I'd feel like a stalker.

how come?
I keep in touch with all my ex's. I cannot imagine my life differently. My ex husband is an exception and it drives me crazy -the not knowing if he's ok. His wife object us contacting each other though and I have to respect it. I cannot imagine you have the chance to talk to her, to know, and you don't use it because of an "angry lady".

On the other hand -if the girl behaved the way she did back then, there is a big chance she will still not want to talk to you now.

Niether have I ever encountered the staring syndrome (but I'm english and white so I don't really look very different).

We call it "giraffe syndrome" -people stare like if they saw a giraffe walking in the street. My husband is black and this is what he gets it towns and villages, but he didn't in -for example -Krakow (only girls stared at him, but for a different reason). I heard big cities are more racist than towns, as Poles are keeping their good behaviour if there is a chance they could meet the person again...

This giraffe syndrome keeps annoying me and I can never get used to it -as i tend to forget the skin coulour of my bman and then I see this look and I can never understand what is going on in the beginning, and then I remember again. Those people feel kind of ashamed when confronted -and I like confronting them a lot!

Love / Opinion from Polish men on this please (Polish men so 'spiritually' romantic?) [43]

Is conjugation of Verbs complicated like French or Spanish?

at least twice as difficult.
It is not similar to German nor English. You can translate SOME things literally but not all.

A man who is in love with you after knowing you for one month doesn't love you. He can't. He doesn't know you. He loves the image of you in his head. Finding someone who can be so intensly in love with you can be overwhelming and will boost your ego so much that you will soon be addicted to this love. Don't try to adjust to his behaviour. Do your thing, take your tie, know him well before you decide anything.

Love / Can't get over "the Polish experience" [21]

hehehe
it's one of the things I haven't tried in my life yet. Was close to that once or twice. But I'm one of those totally annoyingly moral people -the need of clean nice karma always wins.

Still haven't answered my question, now, have you? C'mon, help a guy to understand.

sorry, for some reason I don't see like five replies when I post mine...

so, nasza klasa is sth like Polish facebook -the difference is they made it like a place where you can meet your old schoolmates, hence "Nasza Klasa" -"Our Class".

Love / Can't get over "the Polish experience" [21]

I don't really understand what happened. I wonder what trend there is? Parents involved? Or maybe she just wanted to keep her options open in case she wannted to go back? Hard to say. what she did was cruel and unnecessary. Everyone should have the guts to confront other people about their feelings.

Did you think of getting in touch with her again? You could look her up in nasza-klasa. Most Poles are there, you could see what she looks like now...

Language / It is not possible to translate names into English or Polish! [52]

During my translatology classes at univeristy we had it clearly stated NOT TO translate personal names, surnames, cities in sworn translation. That's the rule. I like it very much, must say. My name is Urszula and I don't like being called Ursule nor Ursula. Just one letter difference makes the whole difference to me. I don't understand why all those people ask you to translate their names... weird...

Love / Polish boyfriend coming to visit [52]

do i have to learn polish if a polish lady shows a serious interest? i know she will probably say it is not necessary, but, it is probably her kindness. she will probably have an expectation from me to learn her language.

I'm afraid you will have to face your girl's parents, friends, uncles, aunts and employers. My husband doesn't seem to mind but I go crazy every time I hear "you're in Poland, you must learn Polish now" with this cheeky smile on their faces... It's really annoying. Especially that so may Poles do speak Englisg and so few of them are ready to use it.

these girls who are curious of black things are after casual sex, aren't they?

Many of them are, but then they will not bother to learn the language or find out about the culture ;) . Our forum is for married -or at least seriously involved couples.

As to what you say about daugthers/fathers and wealth -I don't know anything any more. I used to say (when living abroad for many years) that Polish girls were very emotional, they loved deeply and didn't care about financial status. And believe me -I saw many girls like that -who fought for love, stood against parents who were against their loved one (because he was a foreigner), and did everything in their parents for their love to win -and there was no financial reward whatsoever -not even a sign there could be one in the future. And then I came to Poland, I still see this kind of girls, but I also see th younger generation -and must say things change. For example -they approach my husband continuously and propose sex/marriage/date. Some of them give up when they find out he's married and has a baby, some of them don't. "In my times" (hehe) no girl would do such a thing -it was the guy who had to do the first step. And I too hear of girls who like dating foreigners as they think it will bring a better status -be it money, travelling, good house, car or whatever... But I and my friends were brought up believeing money didn't matter, true feeling did.

My son said, "Go to school, learn to be a doctor and you can have the house you want."

Great advice! :)

maybe, she will not want a rich husband or she may not want to be a doctor. but, adults want her to repeat their own life experiences and advices are accordingly

That's what parents do. They give advice. Their own experience is all they have. And children always reject this advice until they use their own experience to see that the old folkes were right hehehe

btw, how are you doing that? learning 5 languages?

That's all I do. Or rather did. I've got MA in Spanish Philology, and learnt other languages along the way. I am sure you're good at whatever your job is. Everyone has been gifted differently.

Love / Polish boyfriend coming to visit [52]

what do you think why 99% of polish girls are posting here they looking for penpals from usa, uk, germany etc to learn english, german, dutch, etc, but, none of them is interested in tanzanian, ethiopian, etc? cause these poor africans can't buy a love.

I can speak five languages and none of them have anything to do with economic situation of the countries they represent. Whenever I have a chance, on any forum, with any penpals, I practise them. This forum happens to gather English native speakers among others. English is the most widely spoken language in the world. I think looking for a penpal who speaks this language is nothing but natural. On the other hand I happen to be a founder of a forum for Nigerian-Polish couples and we have lots of girls there trying to learn Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and other Nigerian languages. I wonder what answer you'd give to them.

Softsong, I am deeply moved by your story. Everyone here tries to be cynical, because having feelings would make them less men I guess. But the truth is you are a very strong, big-hearted human being anyone should feel privileged being a friend/lover/husband/child of. You must be wonderful to be around.

what food can i prepare for him that for sure poles like him will like?

Chicken is always safe -most people like it. Any traditional food will be highly appreciated I'm sure, just try not to use any controversial ingredients until you know his taste (I mean any kinds of worms/intestines/stomachs/tongues/snakes etc). At my church in Greece we had a lot of Fillipinos (even the pastor himself was one) and whenever they prepared food it was always deliscious and everyone liked it more than any other food -and we had representatives from many different countries. So you shouldn't worry at all. As everyone else said: just be yourself, relax, let the moment guide you. I'm sure it will be great. And let us know how it went :)

Language / Nice Polish phrases to say to men [76]

so when's the big date?
If you can make it funny, you can say "Robaczku" (my worm), "Prosiaczku" (my piglet), "Pysiu" (sweet face)
"misiu" is very nice as well as "szczurku (my little rat, sounds bad but it IS sweet) or you can make mixes of Polish and English -like "bejbasku" from baby + Polish ending, "haniczku" (honey) etc.

Good luck!
