Travel / Car hire Przemysl [11]

Scouring the Internet, none of the 'big' car hire companies advertise an operation in Przemyśl. It surprises me as the town itself looks to be fairly large. Has anyone on the forums hired a car in Przemyśl, or do you know if there are car hire outlets down there?

On an unrelated note, I'm excited having now booked flights and hotel for a first time visit to Poland soon! Just thought I'd say :-)

cheers

Thanks for the reply, David.

I want to get to a place called Tarnawce, which looks to be a tiny place about 5km or so away, so my guess is it won't be served well by bus. Plus, we want to tour around this town a little (it's the birthplace of my wife's father, so we'd like to find churches and cemeteries and whatnot). So either car hire or perhaps we could hire a taxi to drive us for three or four hours...

Now I think of that, are there taxis in Przemyśl?

Hope it helps.

Thanks, Stu, I'll look over the website...

As for cemetery, if you are referring to the very large one on the hill

Thanks for the info, David. We're travelling down from Kraków for an overnight stay in Przemyśl (if I can convince myself from the confilicting messages I receive that it's actually safe to take my family on Polish trains!) so it will be a flying visit.

The cemetery I hope to find is whichever is the closest to Tarnawce, which I guess will be where my wife's ancestors will be buried. It looks a beautiful part of the world, and I can't wait to go...

That's reassuring, thanks. I plan to travel during the day, so I'm sure that will help too.

I saw somewhere the TLK means "cheap" trains, yet everyone here seems to think they're better than the IR service.

If you ask me - the safest, best bet is to try and get a reservation for 1st class TLK

That's what I'll try to do.

It must be one of the few occasions when cheaper doesn't mean worse!

Thanks again for the assistance everyone...

Life / Polish people and Politeness [84]

What a fascinating thread. I've held doors open in Paris and had the same lack of response, so I guess it might be more widespread than Poland alone. I'm interested to see for myself when I come to Poland for the first time later in the year.

It never occured to me that it's up to me to say good morning first or risk bringing the wrath upon myself - what an interesting thought.

What about the great British bane of queue jumping - is that usual in Poland?

Travel / Przemysl in October. Is there much going on this month? [3]

Is there much going on in Przemysl in late October? Is it a 'tourist' town that has a season, or is it a bustling place all year long?

We're not bothered about nightclubs, but I'd like to think there will be bars and restaraunts open... anyone been there that time of year?

Nah, they became predictable after an hour or so. :-)

Seriously, I don't know if you've ever been there, but it looks (from the limited time we had there) to be a beautiful city. I imagine it to be very pleasant in the summer time.

There was certainly a lot less English spoken than elsewhere we went in Poland, so my advice to any foriegners thinking of visiting there is to have at least a few basic Polish words at your disposal (but surely we do that as a courtessy anyway, don't we, foriegners?). The people we spoke to were very friendly...

Travel / My trip to Poland late last year: Kraków and Przemyśl [5]

dzień dobry

I wanted to say thanks to all on these forums who helped in various ways with my trip to Poland late last year. You gave me translations, tips and advice that helped a great deal.

We spent a few days in Kraków, and then to went on to Przemyśl before returning to Kraków. We had a great time, and found the polish people really friendly. Only the railway system seemed cold and daunting.

We plan to go back, and I'm still adding to my Polish, which was surprisingly well understood (and tolerated) by the locals. It was really only needed in Przemyśl as pretty much everyone seemed to speak English in Kraków, and generally their English was better than my Polish.

dziękuję

steve
