Except for the Polish blues band that Joker posted, I haven't really seen anything that wouldn't be considered mainstream. Mainstream 1970s, mainstream 1980's, mainstream ... . I know the thread title is "popular Polish music", but wasn't there anything experimental coming from Poland? I mean, like psychedelic, jazz rock or something quirky like Hawkwind? Doug, you've been there long enough. Any thoughts?

The guitarist is excellent, I agree, but I don't think the singer is a good fit for that kind of music. You'd need someone with a much stronger voice like Maggie Bell,Inga Rumpf or Karise Eden for that.

Well, avant-garde/ progressive music doesn't necessarily pay the bills long term. I stopped listening to them after "The Lamb Lies down on Broadway". Same thing happened to Pink Floyd. Everything that came after the "Animals" album was terribly commercial and - at least in my opinion - junk.

What you're saying about the band entering a downward spiral right after Gabriel left is not entirely true. Most of their greatest hits are from the era after Gabriel when they became much more commercial.

Interestingly though, you cannot find a source (in English) that gives you the number of members of the PZPR towards the end of the regime in the 1980s. The only number I've ever found was on Wikipedia, which claims that membership was about 3.5 million in the 1970s. Unfortunately, I can't read Polish. Are there Polish sources out there which are more accurate?
