He wrote in German which is significant.

He writes in German because that's what he knows. I write in English does that make me British? What does the language itself mean? His mother was a German woman and spoke to him in German so he learned it. I learned English growing up because that's what everyone around me spoke but I am American.

One thing we must all ask ourselves: What does language make us? Just because you are fluent in a language...does it make you that nationality or culture?

Seanus, Where is the proof Copernicus clung to teutonism or Germanity? I don't see it. His father was Polish, also. His mother's side of the family were German but fought Teutonism. Sounds like they were more Polish than German.

If you were to show me proof his family supported the teutons and were anti polanism I could say he was German but that isn't the indication so why turn him into something he isn't just to satisfy certain people who can't even go back in time and ask him what he would prefer to be called "German" or "Polish"? Or is the correct term "Prussian"?

Comparing the way that USA was built to the creation and struggle for survival
of Israel is not very sensible here. Two completely different cases.

There are some similarities between the beginning of the US and Israel in the sense that people came to our countries from other places. The US and Israel were both inhabited by others who were living there before we came (in Israel, it's Arabs, in America, it's Native Americans). The Europeans (who eventually became Americans or the descendants of) removed Native Americans while the Israelis removed troublesome Arabs. Both countries have their origins in inviting people from all over the world to live on land that others lived on, fighting with them and removing them. The same sort of thing happened to Native American tribes that happened to Palestinians. The native Americans were warlike and troublesome, wanted their land and the whiteman to leave it so they started trouble and were removed, put on reservations and relocated to other parts of the country. Same with the Palestinians.

It's a nice gesture that Germans named a communications satellite after a Pole.

This is a step in the right direction. Germans should name more things after Poles to acknowledge the contributions Poles have made over the years.

It's because of how Israel became a nation, Yehudi. I'll give you the perspective. You got restitution claims occuring in places like Poland and you have Palestinians who have been displaced from their homes and shoved into Gaza. Yehudi, I am not judging any of this, just being an objective observer and reporting.

Mention Polish nationalism or racism and people are going to mention Jewish nationalism and racism. People are going to wonder why Jews have the right to restitution when Palestinians do not. They are going to bring up the issues involving the Palestinians whenever restitution and jewish nationalism becomes an issue. It's human nature.

BB look at the majority of Africans...sure some created outstanding civilizations but most have not. They still live like they did thousands of years ago.

African tribes have been around a long time, no?

Compare Africa to Europe. It's not the same. The Africans, except for Egyptians and similar civilizations, if there were any, weren't as ambitious.

It's not the same, ShawnH. Europe is worthy of admiration for preserving so many homogenous groups for so long a period so that each one's language and culture reached such heights of sophistication and distinction. Truly phenomenal when compared to the rest of the world.

But what about language and culture, Seanus. No one can deny that Europe and Asia have the monopoly on those. Europe, especially, has so many different languages.

Where else are you going to go in the world to experience that many so close together? You go to the US, Mexico or Canada, you are going to hear mostly English, French and Spanish. You go to South America, you hear Spanish and some Portugese. Europe is truly unique in this regard.

Right now they do...but who knows for how long. Doesn't this type of thing bring out the radicalism in homogenous populations?

ShawnH: there has to be a history of homogenity or else culture and language are not going to reach the heights of sophistication they do in places like Europe and Asia. There are outside influences but a strong cohesion, also.

Homogeny plays a strong role in the development of language and culture.

PP, there are terrorist cells in many of those countries you have listed.

Maybe so but Europe is a homogenous place otherwise you wouldn't have the cultures and languages you have. It's not a big melting pot like certain countries. Europe has many examples of homogenity, that's all.

Quite a few in Europe. Let's see, there's the Polish, the French, the British, the German, the Italians, the Spanish...the Irish, the Swiss, the Portugese, the Luxemborgese, the Welch, the Scottish, the Romanians, the Swedes, the Dutch, the Finns, the Basques. This is all very general...I am sure they get even more homogenized than that when you start breaking them down into their tribes, clans and subgroups.

Radical Islam should not be allowed to be built up due to the disastrous policies of Western governments.

If it is allowed it's going to encourage radical elements in the homogenous populations across Europe.

That's a good point Seanus. There's people who talk like that everywhere. They leave obnoxious comments whenever they see articles or stories on racism or homosexuality. It happens all over. I am sure Poland is no different.

USA, Canada / What do you think about NM (New Mexico) state? [40]

If you are going to visit New Mexico, you must stop by at White Sands National Monument. The only bad thing is they test nuclear missiles there.

White Sands is made up of large gypsum dunes that are hard like plaster of paris so you can climb them and walk on them. It's the largest pure gypsum dune field in the world.

There's a walking trail and a trail you can drive thru.
There's a White Sands Institute that offers courses in photography.
Animal species that have become white due to natural selection (lizards, spiders, mice, scorpions, toads) can be found throughout the dunes. It's definitely a must-see.

I've only been thru NM without stopping long. Sounds like it has some nice places. It has a hot air balloon festival but I forget when it is.

Genealogy / Why Polish aren't white?? [272]

Polish immigrants "everyone knows" are good for cheap, manual work. They typically do not occupy high places on the social prestige scale.

Poles have done excellent in the US, especially the Northeastern part. Where does this stereotype come from? We aren't cheap labor over here.

I guess it was a mistake to bring jobs and careers into it. Maybe they don't want jobs and careers? My point is, it's better to be beautiful than ugly.

It might be a BS thread but the guy who made it might have seen plenty of beautiful Polish women so why not say "yeah being beautiful and getting complimented and having people say your country has the most beautiful women is not a bad thing".

Beauty is somewhat in the eye of the beholder but there is a general beauty/ugly line and you are on one side or the other with most people.
