Nord Stream is much more than just an environmental problem. It's a big geopolitical game with a multitude of undesirable consequences (political, economical, social, environmental etc.)

Baltic marine ecosystem is a matter of great concern, but is not the only one! Security issues are very important, too! And economical aspects should also not be disregarded(fishery, sea transport, tourism etc.).

Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian authorities raise a large number of objections to the Nord Stream environmental impact assessment:

New Era For Gazprom, As Gas Giant's Fortunes Plummet

Gazprom's pipeline network, a large part of it in Russia, is also aging and in need of upgrading. As "The "Moscow Times" noted on May 27, "No other company has so many explosions on major pipelines."

Q+A-Exclusive Analysis experts on Russia's oil, mine sector

In order to finance all its new projects (LNG initiatives, development of Yamal and Eastern Siberian deposits and the Pre-Caspian, Nord and South Stream pipelines) Gazprom would have to spend $30 billion annually for the foreseeable future. Even at times of high oil prices, Gazprom's investment programme rarely exceeded $4 billion. With $60 billion debt ($10 billion due in 2009) and exports halved because of the fall in demand, it is in no position to continue expanding. More to the point, major Russian banks' credit lines with Gazprom have reached their limits. It is possible that Gazprom will postpone development of capital-intensive Yamal and Eastern Siberian deposits and will concentrate on Shtokman, Nord Stream and South Stream projects, which are also politically significant for the Kremlin.

Nord Stream, Matthias Warnig (codename "Arthur") and the Gazprom Lobby

The files list a number of targets Warnig - "Arthur" was assigned to spy upon. These ranged from a report he submitted in May, 1987 which contain documents about the energy business in West Germany, to a report dated December 8, 1987 about the policies of enterprise management in the West. He also submitted reports about biotech research in the West, computer technology and dozens of other reports mainly dealing with industrial espionage.

Warnig's career was furthered by his alleged relationship with KGB Lieutenant-Colonel Vladimir Putin in Dresden. According to German press reports, the two men were allegedly collaborating on recruiting West German citizens to work for the KGB according to Warnig's former colleagues.

Poland will take control over cleaning up Baltic Sea

A report prepared by Polish experts about ecological dangers in Baltic Sea could jeopardize a German and Russian initiative to build an underwater gas pipe called Nordstream. If this project was to be carried out it could free thousand tons of chemicals sunk there during a World War II. - We have to prepare a report that will stop Gazprom. We need to do it quickly" - said Marcin Libicki, a former European MP, who was the first one to demand independent enviormental expertise. He managed to establish a baltic coallition against Nordstream.

Top German Spy Says More Russian Snooping on Firms

The director of Counter-Intelligence at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, said the spying was aimed mostly at information on alternative and renewable energy and efforts to increase efficiency. European energy interests, diversification plans, and Germany's economic situation were also espionage targets.

jamestownfoundation.blogspot.com/2009/06/russian-spies-and-european-energy.html

The head of Germany's counterintelligence organization, the BfV, Burkhard Even told the newspaper Die Welt am Sonntag on June 21, 2009 that the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, the SVR, has been actively conducting espionage operations against the German energy sector. "The Russian intelligence services, keeping up with their government's changing information needs, have intensified efforts in recent years to investigate German firms illegally," Even said.

What do the German Greens think about building new nuclear power plants in Russia for power supply of Nord Stream? Embracing Nord Stream pipeline and closing down nuclear power plants in Germany, they just transfer nuclear power plants from Germany to Russia. Is'nt that kind of policy a bit of hypocritic?

Nord Stream assessment seriously underestimates environmental consequences for the Baltic Sea
panda.org/about_our_earth/search_wwf_news/?163682/Nord-Stream-assessment-seriously-underestimates-environmental-consequences-for-the-Baltic-Sea

WWF finds several problems in the Nord Stream EIA report, concerning undersea munitions, seabed interventions, Natura 2000 sites and other protected areas, emissions of nutrients and harmful substances from seabed sediments, route options (noting that alternative land routes through Eastern European countries was not assessed at all!), vaguely and inadequately described mitigation actions, compensation measures and monitoring programs.

polishmarket.com.pl/document/:19588?lang=PL - NordStream spells ecological disaster in the Baltic

Despite Russian and German claims that this is a bilateral project, in fact, it concerns all European countries, especially those located at the Baltic Sea. There is a serious risk that the chemical weapons deposited in the sea bed (both from WWII and post-war years), organic contamination and heavy metals may be released during construction work with disastrous effects.

Opening Salvos of a New Gas War: Russia Versus the EU and Ukraine
jamestown.org/single/?no_cache=1&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=34764&tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=7&cHash=20f2059ddb

At the heart of the matter are a number of issues vital for Russian interests; maintaining its gas hold over Europe and its geopolitical goal of bringing Ukraine into Russia's sphere of influence. If the through-put capacity of the Ukrainian pipeline is expanded by almost 60 billion cubic meters there would be no commercial justification for building either the Nord Stream or South Stream pipelines.

Nord Stream Espoo Report

This document should not be considered particularly credible, with several environmental risks (for example, dioxins and dumped munitions) being grossly underestimated.

Environmental and geopolitical concerns mix in EP objections to Nord Stream project

The planned Nord Stream pipeline along the seabed of the Baltic Sea worries MEPs for both environmental and geopolitical reasons. In a report adopted by 542 votes in favour, 60 against and 38 abstentions, the EP calls on Commission and Council to be more actively involved in evaluating the potential environmental impact of this gas pipeline.

Europe gas crisis boosts Schroeder pipeline plan:
eubusiness.com/news-eu/1231466531.2/view

"Russia has set a goal at diversifying our delivery routes for gas," Putin told journalists at his residence Thursday outside Moscow.

"If we had already built this pipeline, if no one had hampered us, it would already be operating through the Baltic Sea."

That's why Russia cut the gas supplies (at least one of the most important reasons).

Well, I made a pretty emotional comparison. It doesn't, however, void any environmental arguments.

BTW, the Baltic Sea has been listed by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) as one of the particularly sensitive sea areas. A swedish study confirms that the Baltic Sea has never been in such a bad condition as it is right now. A quarter of the sea bed shows no sign of life. (The Local, 2 Nov 08) Seaborne oil tranport is expected to rise. So, do we really need more load to the sea environment? Oh yes, this pipeline is sooooo environmentally friendly...
