That sounds interesting - and please excuse my ignorance - is it a celebration of some kind ..?!

just a get together for the younger polish community.

there are also dances for the older of the polish community.

I am yet to find a Polish restaurant in Sydney though - would like to try some Polish food. Does anyone have any recommendations?!

being from melbourne i am not sure what is available up in sydney but the polish clubs (like community centre's) usually have a restaurant area.

there is a restaurant in melbourne that is called "borsch, vodka and tears" if you are ever down this way.

there is also a polish deli at the vic market.

that is true.

and there is even a festival celebrating everything polish in november, the link is:

.polishfestival.com.au/

hey king, there are a few polish deli's around Melbourne, not just the one at the market, there is also a restaurant somewhere near Upway i think.

i live in the north east, the vic market would be the closest, especially working in the city.

well, poles do come from a cooler climate so that could explain why there are more poles down south.

but that said, the temperatures between melbourne and sydney do not differ much.

and a trip down our great ocean road or to wilsons promitory may change your mind about great beaches

King Sobieski, your beaches along the Great Ocean Road and at Wilsons Promitory are very very beautiful but ........ even though I visited those beaches during the hottest time of the year, I still couldn't swim - the water is simply freezing! But beautiful, nonetheless!

i would have thought ocean grove and the like would have been okay to swim in over summer.

down the mornington area over summer the water isnt that cold, but maybe im used to it.

Is anyone out there living in Melbourne?

Yes, Sayno, i am from melbourne.

My parents think the best polish food is athe polish club in albion. If you want something more commercial then try borsch, vodka, tears. They have a website, just google the name. There is also a place called chesters out in the east that my brother happened upon.

there is also a polish dance every month and if you can read polish it is at:

hey syrena,

i am from Melbourne and have been on the Polish dziupla site but my knowledge of written Polish is worse than my speaking Polish.

i actually am related to two names in your list.

I have a ton of posts on the message boards there, easily found by doing a message board search for Bartoszewicz.

do you have Emilianowicz (from the Jankowice area) amongst your family tree?

have you heard of the Dalidowicz family?

The Preston market has a few good shops, The Glenroy shop is the main manufacturer, and that stuff goes to the Victoria and Preston market.

there may be polish kielbasa sold in Depreston Market like there is in coles, but have never seen any polish deli there.

Is anyone going to dziupla??

i am planning on going, just trying to raise the family to attend in force.

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

would it make a difference if they did not....god forbid that you would have to purchase coffee from a non franchised chain

There's a french coffee shop close by and the coffee is just awful/

rule of thumb when in the UK, be wary if a UK resident is making your coffee. they are better at cups of tea than coffee.

thats could be because you are not english and thus dont realise a good cup of coffee when you drink one...

i was unaware that the english were known for their coffee skills. maybe things have changed since i was their 5 years ago. but back then i lost count of the crap coffees i was served.

i think australia has more knowledge in the coffee department, and drink more per capita than any other country.

Not sure that's quite true now. In my house good coffee rules. I rarely make tea.
Reason we have a lot of good coffee shops now is because more people drink coffee than tea.

as i just posted,i was there 5 years ago and decent coffee was hard to in shops that served coffee. it all really hinges on the preparer, if they dont know what they are doing then you are in trouble.

youre right... and we put milk in our tea as well... weirdos, huh?

you dont also sometimes add sugar as well do you....gasp

we are quite happy to let foreigners visit our country but we like to keep our coffee for our own... its a commonwealth thing... your either a member or your not... we either owned you or taught you how to drink tea and coffee... its an empire thang... you gotsta understand...

taught us the art of tea maybe, the coffee thang would be a more migrant (im guessing italian) influence.

We have a saying here in the UK "you pay for what you get"

it did not matter if i paid more or less, instant coffee was more gratifying taste wise than a cappucino.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

i dont think polak is derogatory at all.

i have even seen an accounting firm called "pol-acc", quite funny actually.

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

Why do you assume that was the context in which that question was asked?

Well, one would ask if there were any cafes, not a specific chain that is globalised beyond belief.

And some of starbucks practices, ie not getting permits and setting up shop are highly questionable.
