Food / Which ingredients/vegetables/fruits/meats are nonexistent in traditional Polish cuisine? [125]

I think it is all changing very quickly in Poland. I would guess that for younger generations ( in big cities, working all days) introduction of canned soups could be very convenient solutions. I suppose powder soup is not a proper meal but nice, easy and quick snack at work, when camping on holidays...at home if we want something quick before proper meal. I quite like tomato soup with 'makaron' from Knorr. I would say it tastes quite nice especially in cold winter day.

Real Estate / Price of Real estate for sale in Poland, Białołęka [23]

I am from Krakow ( living in UK now) so I don't know Warsaw districts very well....ha ,ha especially ( not sure you heard about it) but they call us 'centusie' tight with money in Krakow and too laid back:-).

I think decision about buying property is very difficult so if someone does not know Warsaw very well it would be better to rent first I think. I think there is the same tendency all over Warsaw, Krakow, London.....some run down districts 'evaluate' and get fashionable and expensive like Kazimierz I Krakow ..Targowek but I think also Praga in Warsaw.

I think transport, schools but also family living close are important.

Biscuits...?

I am just back from Poland and I realised how much I miss these bakeries ( Avitex, Buczek, lots independent ones) everywhere with fresh coffees and freshly baked varieties of cakes, 'drozdzowki' .

It reminds me of Austria, Germany....Not much UK.

Another thing I noticed most cakes, biscuits are much sweeter in UK- different recipes more sugar used. The worst are some yeast rolls- tasty in itself but tones melted iced sugar on the top.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

The only problem is that this strike differs from police, nurses, fire brigades strikes.... We all agree they work hard and their job is dangerous and often thankless.

With teachers....of course opposition supports them as it is political move but society ....I would say some do some don't.

I think that unfortunately there is not enough money in budget for all these demands from state sector and the only solution would be to introduce 'podatek kastralny' something similar to council tax.

I saw it too in some financial paper. They say in west Europe it is 2-3% of property value. I am not sure to which country they refer. In UK there is normal income tax and council tax (depends on value of property). Council have special tables to estimate it - of course it is estimated as values of properties change but it is about 0.3% not 2%.

I think it would depends on value not size. Small apartment in central Warsaw will have higher tax than big house in the middle of nowhere. I think idea about this tax is good but it can't be so high.

Life / Retiring in Poland [39]

@Rich Mazur

I would think that it depends on residency. If you are polish resident you are obliged to pay polish tax. If you have already paid in USA and it is more you can claim it back if it is less you deduct from amount which you owe in Poland. This way you avoid double taxation.

I don't think that council tax is fair. It was my thought when I moved to UK. It should be combination of value and people living in. I think we can have single person living in expensive property paying high tax and big family in small house paying lower tax. But....big family uses much more services than this single man.For me it is like paying for luxury, privilege to live in nice house and nice area. My friends in Poland were bit shocked when I told them that in the past English paid for privilege of having windows.

I suppose by moving from Poland to UK I compare some things. It started to be obvious to me that if we want to build social houses, pay 500zl per child, increase salaries of police, nurses, teacher....there is not enough money in budget and we need another tax to top it up.

In relation to council tax I don't agree with it. Someone already pays lots money to buy house in nice area ....why to charge him still monthly for it?

I think Poland has different mentality. Like when living in flat you pay for rubbish collection depending on how many people live in flat. Also pensions. I know it is going to change in Poland for worse. In UK you can be Managing Director and pay contribution for state pension for 30 years and you have the same state pension as someone on minimum wages after 30 years.

I think the problem with the teachers is that there are too many of them. There are not enough hours of lessons for decent pay. As a result they expect to earn huge salaries on small amount of school hours. If it was in private company someone would be redundant or hours would be reduced as part time. Teachers demand full pay. Sorry but I find it ridiculous.

I know they do but it is not just my opinion.I have friend she comes form teachers' family and as she supports strike she admitted this surplus of teachers. I think teachers are very different some prepare themselves for lessons but some do minimum and more experience ones use preparation from previous years.

I still remember geography teacher in my grammar school. She was sitting reading somethink and asked us to read lesson from book. from time to time there was test which she had to check. I woukd not say she was overworked with any preparations.

To be honest Spike - Opinion about lots private academies in Poland is not very good.

I heard this opinion that lots 'not very clever people' go there and pay to finish.

I don't know this Academy so I can't comment.

Of course job market verify your skills but ( am not sure if it so strong demand now) you could hardly find any decent office job in the past without certificate of finishing University.

I am not abut USA but I Europe Oxford, Cambridge, Sorbona.....they are not private.

Unfortunately you can't verify teachers the way you can verify chef in the restaurant - it has been already raised here before.

But I think that their hours should be more defined - how many lessons per week- if they have to prepare or check tests they should do it at school. Maybe should be some rooms provided for it.

UK, Ireland / No Poles Allowed! - Latest Polonophobic Outrage Out of Britain [660]

To be honest -from my experience- there are 2 kind of Brits.

Normal, open-minded people ( usually educated and well travelled) and narrow-minded 'little Englanders' who feel superior to to anyone foreign.
