Law / Foreigners Getting Married in Poland - a Guide to Formal Preparation [54]

Getting married in Poland - general questions...

Both I and my girlfriend are Polish citizens. If we get married here in Poland, can we have a wedding outdoors, or on a private property? We wouldn't get married in a church. Also, what's the process like? Can someone walk me through it?

UK, Ireland / Do Polish People Litter their own country (just like they do in the UK)? [84]

Good thread. I moved to Poland from Canada two months ago, and frankly I'm shocked at the total lack of respect Poles have for their parks here. Obviously there are countless decent and cultured people who pick up after themselves, but visit any park and you'll see just how many people there are utterly devoid of any class. Here in Krakow, the best example I can think of is Zakrzowek, a gorgeous lake that hundreds of people picnic around and swim in every sunny day (it's only 2 km from the old town). There are literally thousands of bottles, cans, plastic bags and junk-food wrappers littering the ground. Walk around the lake for an hour or so, and you'll see many, many mouthbreathing teenagers throwing their beer bottles against the rocks and structuring their sentences around the work "kurwa". It's pretty disgusting really.

Love / How do I make a Polish girl cry? [107]

lukaszpoznanski:
The last field is labeled "Telefon" right? I was looking at this one girl's profile, and under "Telefon", she actually wrote "BlackBerry 8300". Can you say "fail"?

maybe it was a joke and the one who didn't get is you...

I did consider this - but judging from her pictures, I'm guessing it was her that didn't get it.

Why would you want to do that? Your girlfriend sounds awesome

Mate, I don't have a girlfriend. Kasia is fictitious.

Love / How do I make a Polish girl cry? [107]

I think if you buy for her a mobile with an inferior camera she will cry.

This reminds me of something hilarious I saw on Nasza-Klasa.pl. You know how everyone's profile page has a field for their first and last names, age, location, email address and phone number? The last field is labeled "Telefon" right? I was looking at this one girl's profile, and under "Telefon", she actually wrote "BlackBerry 8300". Can you say "fail"?

Love / How do I make a Polish girl cry? [107]

Since there are so many threads requesting relationship advice on the absurd assumption that all Polish women (and men for that matter) are exactly the same, I offer this discussion:

How do I make a Polish girl cry? My new Polish girlfriend (who, by the way, is named Kasia, is Catholic, smokes cigarettes and likes all things American), is always upbeat and cheerful. This is highly annoying. I've tried everything to upset her, but nothing seems to work. Help?!

News / Poland to penalise commie symbols [27]

This is an interesting development. Does this mean they'll finally remove those hammer and sickles you can still find in Warsaw and Krakow?

"For intact hammer and sickles then visit the Soviet War Cemetery on the way down from the airport, the Soviet War Memorial in Praga (see What to See, Praga) or do some real investigative work by heading to the great big housing block close to Der Elefant on pl. Bankowy. Hidden round the side of Kino Capitol - a former Russian institute - the eagle eyed detective will be rewarded by the sight of a massive hammer and sickle almost entirely obscured by the shadows. "

Life / Winners-like store in Poland? [3]

In Canada, we have a terrific chain of stores called Winners, which basically sells new clothes (often designer brands) for super-cheap, as they source from manufacturer surpluses. Over the years I've scored some great stuff from Winners, saving me thousands of dollars. If I needed a new pair of Calvin Klein jeans or a Polo shirt, I'd never have to spend more than $50 or $30, respectively. Here in Kraków, I can't get a decent pair of jeans for under $80, and of course I earn way less than I used to in Canada. Does anyone know of a Polish store that's similar to Winners?

Travel / Motorcycle tour of Poland [137]

Just seeing a touring thread here gets my blood flowing a little faster. Just before moving to Kraków a month ago from Vancouver, I sold my bike - a 2005 Kawasaki 636 - with the intention of buying an older Ducati here in Europe. A friend I used to ride with moved to Greece around the same time, opting instead to ship his brand-new 1098S with him. Although I still haven't replaced my bike, I'm hoping to soon. Just seeing my leathers collecting dust here makes me anxious. I'm planning some endurance tours this summer - send me a PM if you fancy some good company and reckon you can keep up. I like long days in the saddle - last summer I did several 1000 km days - fun!

Here's a picture of my friend and I from a couple months ago:

Oh, and if anyone sees a good deal on a first-gen 748 or 996, please let me know. :)

Great photos! I've been slowly adding new photos of Kraków (moved here three weeks ago) - you can check them out here: picasaweb.google.com/lucas.poznanski/Poland#

Sticking to the nature theme however, here's a gallery of photos illustrating Canada's wilderness: picasaweb.google.com/lucas.poznanski/TheGreatOutdoors#

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

We just don't know yet.

Precisely. Which is one reason why it's a mistake to enshrine him in the Wawel. We don't yet know who caused that tragedy, although the August 2008 incident casts reasonable suspicion upon Mr. Kaczynski.

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

Cute. Staying on topic however,

In August 2008, a different pilot of Kaczyński's plane, Grzegorz Pietruczuk, was pressured by the president when he refused to land in Tbilisi during the South Ossetian war between Georgia and Russia.[58][59] During that incident, Pietruczuk was asked by the president's staff to change the flight plan and land in Tbilisi.[60] After consulting with the commander of his unit, Pietruczuk refused, justifying his decision by safety concerns. He was then visited in the cockpit by Kaczynski himself, who tried to convince him to change his mind. Kaczynski later told journalists that "the Polish officer should not be cowardly". Nevertheless, Pietruczuk held his ground and the plane landed in Azerbaijan as planned. A few weeks after this incident Pietruczuk was decorated by the defense minister for following correct procedures in this case and keeping the safety of his passengers utmost in his mind.[60] Pietruczuk continued to fly the president's plane after the incident, even after Kaczynski expressed unhappiness with his performance during the flight to Tbilisi.[61] Grzegorz Hołdanowicz, a leading Polish defence analyst, stated his belief that in Smolensk, the pilot Captain Arkadiusz Protasiuk would have been under pressure to land, despite advice from air traffic control to the contrary.[59]

"It's a clear case of VIP-passenger syndrome," flight safety expert Viktor Timoshkin "Air-traffic control told him to take the plane to Moscow or Minsk. I'm certain that the pilot will have told the President about this, and got a firm reply that the plane must land in Smolensk."[62][63]

Work / Moving to Poland from the USA. Question concerning CELTA certificate.I need help [32]

Just a note about the International House in Krakow. I was interviewed for their May 14th course and accepted. I came to Krakow and dropped into the IH to pay the deposit. I was told that the course may not run after all, and that they would call me "in a few days". That was almost three weeks ago, and not a word. My impression is that the Kraków branch is unprofessional and not worthy of your business. Additionally, the Wrocław programme costs less.

I'm now teaching privately (without certification) and doing just fine, although I do speak Polish so that helps. I found a great apartment in the Officer District (which is a 20 minute walk from the Rynek) for just 400zł/CAN$145/mo (with several other people). When I'm not teaching or exploring Kraków, I'm sitting on my private balcony, enjoying the third-storey view with a glass of wine in hand. I love Polska!

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

That would be supremely tasteless.

Striving to preserve the dignity and gravity of the Wawel is "supremely tasteless"? What if the analysis of the Black Boxes reveals that Kaczynski ordered the landing against all expert opinion? What if his documented recklessness caused all those deaths? What then, when he's already buried in Poland's most sacred place?

News / Kaczynski to be buried at Wawel ?! [289]

Does anyone know if any protests or roadblocks are planned?

It's outrageous that this bigot will be buried among Poland's heroes. Of course what happened was a tragedy, but it's very possible that it was Kaczynski himself that ordered his pilot to disobey Russian air traffic control instructions - he had a documented history of demanding landings in unsafe conditions. He may very well have caused the deaths of all those people.

I say again, does anyone know if any protests or roadblocks are planned?

Law / How do I arrange a Dowód Osobisty / ID card in Poland? [10]

Can someone here help me by explaining how I apply for a Dowód Osobisty? I recently arrived in Kraków and plan to stay here for a couple years.

I have a valid Polish passport with a PESEL, and I just had the photo taken that's required for the Dowód. Can someone point me in the right direction for the next step?

Thanks!

Work / Typical rate for 1-on-1 English lessons in Poland (Krakow)? [37]

my suggestion is simply to come on over, get a qualification and hit the streets. It should be no problem for a freshly qualified teacher to pick up hours in August in Krakow :)

Thanks DD. I think I'll do exactly that. I was hoping to find work without spending time and money on certification, but perhaps that's not realistic. Any idea what the cheapest and fastest course available in Krakow might be?

One word of advise, if I may: keep your lefties views to yourself while in Poland, and especially in Kraków which is very conservative city. Don't you ever dare criticizing late pope John Paul II: you will find yourself very lonely.

I do appreciate the advice, and I'll keep all of that in mind. However, I'm sure that in a city of a million people, I'll meet some open-minded people who share my views.

Speaking of Pope John Paul II, did you know that he made a Saint out of the notorious 16th-century torturer Thomas More, who burned people alive for possessing English-language copies of the Bible?

Work / Typical rate for 1-on-1 English lessons in Poland (Krakow)? [37]

Thank you for all of your input DD. Am I correct to understand that you teach ESL in Poland? Do you have any colleagues at Krakow schools that might be interested in hiring a motivated and paedantic teacher? :)

Work / Typical rate for 1-on-1 English lessons in Poland (Krakow)? [37]

One thing with Krakow - the competition is intense. Lots and lots and lots of people are either teaching there or want to be teaching there - so you may find that it's very difficult to find clients in the beginning. You should also be aware that relying on private lessons is a dangerous game - certainly, don't rely on them to pay your rent!

Hmm - ok this is a little scary then. Am I crazy to just show up in Krakow next month and hope to find teaching work, either privately or for a school?

I have six months' experience teaching English as a volunteer (part-time), and a university degree in I.T., but no ESL certs.

Thoughts?
