Life / The "Rudification" Of Society - Is This Happening In Poland As Well? [146]

MareGaea, do you not think this is about people's financial difficulties like what you said

Of course I think it has sth to do with it as the powers that are now on the rise generally only can rise in circumstances like this.

And as usual the mug on the street (or on the forum) blames Johnny foriegner for their woes rather than the true culprits.
Weapons of mass distraction.

Ppl will be always looking for scapegoats, yes. And who are the easiest? Indeed the foreigners. The true culprits always get away anyway...Like the term weapons of mass distraction :)

But I was wondering, do we see a general trend here or is it limited to a few isolated incidents?

Sorry, I'm quite busy, so I won't be able to react directly.

Life / Polish "prog" music? I'd be interested to know about bands etc. [30]

This is probably the very first prog rock/heavy metal song ever made:

Macabre - Be Forwarned (1966)

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rhv4au28mz8

Later they changed their name to Pentagram.

Here is some more psychedelics (after all, that's where prog is originating from)

The Mystic Tide from NYC with Frustration:

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yhoNN4OuNz8

Running through the night:

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=n-TdA_x3AjM

And of course Mystery Ship:

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=zAZbBAJLEuI

All these guys were at least 7 years ahead of their prog/heavy time :)

PS: if you want to have them, I have all of these mp3's, except Running through the night.

In general, people of right-leaning conservative persuasion tend to be more for politeness, civility and restraint as traditonal values than many leftists and anarchists who equate rudeness, vulgarity and aggressiveness with freedom.

This is actually nonsense. I am on the left of the centre and I am generally polite irl. I know plenty of other left-wingers who are very polite as well. I know also left-wingers that are not polite. I know right-wingers that are polite, but I also know right-wingers that aren't polite. You shouldn't generalise this much and glorify the right as much as you do; ppl are ppl and being polite is a matter of character, not of political orientation.

This is a slam-dunk fact!

For a self-confessed Libertarian you lean quite far over to the right-hand side. There might be some truth in Marek1111's remark that you're a poster-boy for the Republicans, given the soothing way you talk about those Tea Party guys and the way you talk about the left-wingers. You may not be a poster-boy, but it's clear where your sympathies lay.

Would the reactions be the same if someone decided to burn bibles?

Of course the reactions would be the same - it's about the deed of book-burning, one of the lowest states humanity can reach. And that it's the Koran or any other book, including the Bible is irrelevant in this respect.

But it's definitively not gonna happen as I understand it. Guess Terry Jones was just another attention-seeker.

I have a friend in France who cannot walk down the street in the city in which she was born 40 years ago without being verbally assaulted and spat upon by certain middle-eastern ethnic men who immigrated there in the last decade.

I always wonder where ppl like you get their information. Hearsay? Probably. But you probably also know that "hearsay" info is not really reliable as it tends to get coloured with personal sympathies or antipathies. The part that I quoted from you is just a general prejudice and doesn't happen always, if it happens at all. I know, on the other hand, plenty of girls that can walk down any street they like without being spat upon. It's actually a common myth in the anti-Muslim world: girls cannot walk over street without being harrassed. While this may happen from time to time, it's actually by far not sure if these harrassers are from Middle Eastern descent. In fact, quite some of the girls mentioned above get mostly harrassed by drunken Czechs and Poles, as they told me.

And by the way, with this post you give evidence of possessing not much respect for those ppl at all. And of course in such circumstances, fairy tales become very quickly real stories.

Life / The "Rudification" Of Society - Is This Happening In Poland As Well? [146]

There is a great wee article by Nick Cohen (not someone I always agree with) that addresses this topic.

I especially like this part of the article:

Atheism and secularism, Zuckerman continued, are also correlated with higher levels of education and lower levels of prejudicenot only against women and gays, but people from other ethnicities as well. For good measure, atheists were less likely to beat their children and more likely to encourage them to think independently.

Which is undisputably true.

His argumentation is weak, though.

His argumentation is a lot more profound than I have seen coming from the religious corner.

Gotta dash again.

He said undisputable. Please don't dispute it.

Why don't you give your opinion for a change instead of ridiculing ppl who do?

twopaths.com/faq_homosexuality.htm

Undoubtedly...

Indeed what has atheism and secularism to do with the left-wing? And besides, the source is from the Right corner, so of course the lefties will be made look much worse than they really are. They claim that there has only been 1 right-wing attack, which is a ridiculous statement. There have been more right-wing attacks than just 1.

gawker.com/5286144/the-rise-of-right+wing-violence
agonist.org/sean_paul_kelley/20100325/right_wing_violence

But the violence back and forth is not the point. The point is, what does atheism and secularism have to do with left-wingers?

Trusting on God usually contradicts with trusting in science, and since atheists are not bothered by the presence of a god, they can focus more on science, hence making them more intelligent than ppl who put all their trust in God, not willing to explore things by themselves.

Even if one holds that religion is false, only a close minded secularist can deny that religion was the driving force for nearly all the uniquely great art, literature, economic and even scientific advances of the West.

It was more the struggle with and/or trying to break free from religion that after the Middle Ages produced the most fabulous works of art. Religious art is sth different. Beautiful too as art is supposed to be beautiful anyway. But you cannot say that it's only due to religion that the most beautiful or famous pieces of art have been produced: the Mona Lisa by Da Vinci is not a religious work (does not portray a religious situation or scene from the Bible), the Night Watch from Rembrandt is neither. Pablo Picasso's work is mainly non-religious, Dali, Breughel and most of the Dutch painters...

The secularist state destroys creativity: Why do anything for yourself when the state will do it for you? Why take care of others when the state will do it for you? Why have ambition when the state is there to ensure that few or no individuals are rewarded more than others?

Not true - like in the previous example, art, literature and music are personal expression of these or those desires, wishes or frustrations. If you take a scale and lie on one side the religious oriented works of art and on the other side the non-religious works, I would say the scale would pretty much be in balance. You make the mistake to think that every secular state equals some sort of Socialist or Communist state, which is not true, there are many variations - what would you like to see instead of the current systems? A Theocracy? Hm, Iran is a Theocracy and we don't want to be in Iran, wouldn't we? There is a reason why Church and religion are no longer dominating forces. If given dominance, the Church will, just as any other dominant entity, try to cage ppl, mainly in spirit, but in the old days they even did it physically. And we don't want that. The Church is supposed to be the opposite of Communism, however, both will dominate and deal with dissenting opinions in an unpleasant way, as has been shown.

Don't have time to react to all of the posters - freaking busy for days now and I will be for more days to come - don't you just love it when replacements screw up the system and the SysAdmin has "forgotten" to look after that little problem with the backup servers we, unknown to anybody except the SysAdmin, had for almost 6 months?

Gotta go again.

History / Should David Irving, Holocaust denier, be allowed to run tours to Poland? [246]

Here's an interview with Franz Suchomel, one of the guards in Treblinka. If you understand German, you can see that Irving is a dangerous fool, like I stated before. There are seven parts of it and he explains en detail how it was indeed pssbl to gass and burn all the alledged victims. And Auschwitz gas chambers were even bigger than the ones in Treblinka as the Nazis learned from previous mistakes. David Irving may have been a meticulous researcher, but he interpreted the findings in a wrong way.

Edit: I see they have added English subs to it now. I watched it some time ago without, that's why.

History / Should David Irving, Holocaust denier, be allowed to run tours to Poland? [246]

He doesn't, actually. He says they were gassing 12-15000 people a day, at the peak of operations, and that's all about numbers. He says nothing about burning the corpses, except for that pit for selected old and ill people.

I don't know if you have seen all seven parts of it, but at one point he talks about a pile of corpses lying around behind the gas chamber in the midst of summer. As you can guess what happens to corpses lying in the blistering sun, nobody wanted to touch that pile, not even with a pole (no pun intended). The Jewish workers said they'd rather be shot dead than to have to handle those corpses. And after that he mentions that the Germans had to pick those corpses up themselves and burn them. It's been a while since I saw the interview, but I seem to remember that he mentions the burning somewhere to the end of the interview. But like I said, I haven't seen it in a while.

But then again, why is the burning so important? If he states that they were gassing 12 to 15000 ppl a day, the point has been made, or am I shooting in the dark here?

This is a testimony about the fact, not about the extent of it.

I think his testimony explains very well the extend of things going on (in Treblinka), but there are more of those interviews. If I have time, I will post them as well.

I don't see this having any bearing on Irving's case

This guy was a perpetrator, he actually says they were doing what Irving denies they did. That's the bearing in respect to Irvings claims.

Edit: this interview is actually part of Claude Lanzmann's Shoah. If you get the chance, you really should watch it. It's, I think, about 5 hrs long though.

Polonia / What About The Poles In The Netherlands? [102]

My friends are currently working in holland and are not very happy because they were promised Euro 5 an hour but they are paid only 3.21 Euro after tax + free accommodation (for 18 yrs old) and 4.01 Euros for others (without a room).

You didn't happen to forget that pay in NL is always mentioned before tax? So if these guys get 5 Euro/hr, they indeed will get sth of 4 Euros or less, given the fact that NL knows a taxation of about 33 to 37 per cent. And since it's including accomodation, they should not be complaining at all. They probably don't speak Dutch and since it's probably some low level job, it's like that. Actually, it's correct as 37 per cent of 5 Euro is 1,85. So they shouldn't complain at all. They are getting their 5 Euros. And besides, I don't believe that in Australia low level work like that will pay 20 bucks after tax.

Edit: Again, wages are always mentioned before tax in NL as they are in most countries in the world. Given the nature of their stay they pay 35.8 per cent, which makes sense.

USA, Canada / REFUSED A HOLIDAY VISA TO THE U.S CAUSE IM POLISH [323]

No. His time spent here shouldn't be a consideration for leniency. If anything his punishment should be INCREASED because of the length of time he was here illegally breaking our laws.

What about Polish breaking "your laws"? Same increased punishment?

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

they continue to produce garbage like this

"They" in this case is a comedian called Marek Fis, and guess what? The creator of this hilarious clip is Polish...Just goes to show that ppl are sometimes just looking for things which are not there. Yes - that's the same Marek Fis as Bratwurst posted earlier in this thread.

I've watched many clips from Marek Fis and he is funny as heck. His opening line is usually "ah glad to be here - now one finally sees the faces that belong to the cars". :) Maybe ts should do a little more research before going off on an imagined "anti-Polish slur" by those nasty Germans.

One keeps wishing, but unfortunately some things never change - glad that there is a growing number of Polish ppl that know how to see things in their true perspective.

Edit: so, we have a satirical clip about Poles made by a Pole - what's the point of this discussion other than to caress the "bruised" ego of ts?

I see you didn't get the point. A Polish comedian makes fun of the stereotypes in existence about his fellow countrymen and you drag in the Jews. You fully live up to that other stereotype about the Poles. :)

I would suggest you learn German and you will see that the humour in the clip is not that bad at all. What is worse though is that thenews.pl gives Marek Fis ia fabricated name, complete with background and all.

Another quote by Fis:

"Ihr habt den Karnavall. Da gibt's lange Reden, es wird gesoffen, getanzt und gefummelt. Bei uns heisst das Kirche."

Transl:

"You have your carnival with long speeches, drinking, dancing and fondling. We call that church" :)

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

That's a way of his rebel against German attitude towards Poles:

But isn't that always the essence of stand-up comedians? Or for any comedian for that matter? Any comedian will tell you when asked that the decision to become one is frustration or anger about something. And instead of getting just angry like some individuals on this forum do, he chose to become a funnyman as humour is the best was to level differences. Humour builds bridges and accelerates acceptance of each other and as far as I'm concerned, he's doing a great job.

He is in Germany for 20 years, being himself just 25-years old.

He's actually 32, but that's a minor detail - saw another clip of him in which it says so.

Love / Are Polish mothers-in-law monsters? [91]

I only found out through our neighbour who took a photo of her going into our house

I think there is sth else, sth more fundamentally wrong when neighbours take pictures of who is entering your house when you're not around.

As for the topic at hand, I don't think it's a typical Polish thing - my former mother-in-law was also gruesome and she wasn't Polish.

You do not understand German. So pls don't make comments on what he is trying to do if you don't understand what exactly he is saying.

If he were to make fun of the stereotype of Polish people having subhuman intelligence he would make fun of other people who imply Polish people have subhuman intelligence.

No, because that would give feeding ground to any existing antipathy. By making ppl laugh with jokes about your fellow countrimen you will get other ppl to think about the subject much easier and quicker. But I guess you still don't get the point. Or you only see the point you want to see. As usual.

And why characterize me as "dragging in the Jews" when all I'm merely saying is that Jews would not be ridiculed to this degree.

Because you are dragging in the Jews once again. Jews are being ridiculed just as much by Jewish comedians as any other ppl on Earth. Don't hear you shouting blue murder about that.

The topic at hand was a Polish comedian making fun of stereotypes. Nowhere there was any mention nor any connection to Jews in what shape or form. You are to be credited for bringing them in once more.
