News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

There is genuine support for this - about 45 percent, and it was in PiS election manifesto, so fair enough. Yesterday was sunny so I did see lots of people walking, cycling and jogging.

Problem is that the 45 percent includes many pensioners and unemployed who don't pay tax and have the rest of the week to go shopping anyway.

They don't get junk wages - in fact supermarket cashier's wages are quite high even when compared with junior doctors, teachers, local officials et cetera - Something which is attracting a lot of comments in the press recently. In big towns they get about 3000 sometimes up to 4000.

They are also not forced to work every Sunday, people who have serious religious reservations are normally given exemptions - in fact since Sunday is a higher sales day and commissions are higher they often volunteer for those shifts.

This is not about workers rights, it's about the church. Personally I can survive without Sunday trading, but to me it's a matter of freedom - people should be able to open the shop whenever they feel like it and go shopping whenever they feel like it.

This will not give small business a leg up - in Hungary it had the precise opposite effect as customers switched to doing a huge shop on Saturday - only foreign owned hypers had the number of tills, staff and parking space to cope.

Not everyone has a family - why cant people who are single do what they want on Sunday ?

Also stop spamming every thread. What have migrants and thd EU got to dio with this ?

Well we could do - but so long as we also agree that this thread is about the effect of Sunday trading laws on customers, workers, retailers, churchgoers and it is not about migrants, muslims, cucks, ducks, the EU or Hillary.

Dirk are you able to buy a soda or pay a parking ticket without mentioning migrants ? - cant you keep your bigoted comments to one thread.

Doug you are in a perfect storm - most supermarkets go live with their promo offers on Thursday- knowing this is a weekend when sunday is open there will be many good food offers. Might also be the day when 500 plus is paid - it is on 12th in my town.

In tricity most people are probably paid last friday of the month but a good portion of hourly paud workers on the 10th

All big towns are close to full employment and there are plenty of other options for workers in other industries. The ironic thing is that conditions in retail are better than in many other industries.

The effect of this law is that hundreds of thousands of people who had stable work patterns now will have to change them as hours are extended on the other 6 days. A tiny proportion of retail employees belong to 5e trade unions who initiated this change

Last week was OK because it was warm and lots of people were outside in the garden or doing sports. This weekend it's terrible weather so I think it's going to be more of a challenge to keep the kids occupied tomorrow.

Sometimes yes, and especially in winter when many other attractions (zoo, park, kolejka) are either closed or forlorn looking - it gets them out the house, there are plenty of kids activities in big malls (even if open now they will be unviable) , it's warm, clean, there are toilets and plenty of place to park and if we want to buy a small toy for good behaviour then we can do so. By the way teenagers like malls - they can shop and meet girls there.

Yesterday I took one for a swim and one for a freezing walk in the forest - hope that satisfies your good parenting criteria

You don't need to visit Ikea every weekend unless you happen to be building or buying a place - like millions of young hard working Polish families are at the he moment. Then you will probably visit a lot - people don't have cash to do a years furtnuture shopping at one stroke.

For me it's about freedom to do what you want with your spare time - we pay taxes and work hard, why can't we spend weekends how we feel like it ?

There were other possibilities that most people would accept - limited hours or a higher minimum wage for Sundays - but they went for a "complete" ban except for a bunch of PiS voting interests like florists, small shop owners etc.

I know that 45 percent of Poles arw in favor but if you only asked the 6m that work in the private sector they are overwhelmingly afainst this

What is the best way to diffuse an argument at home ? Tell the wife to call some friends and go shopping. Or alternatively go out yourself to Media Markt and try some new gadgets.

Of course the priests that this law is intended to please no nothing about wives and kids.

News / Thousands of Polish women attend Czarny Piątek rally in Warsaw [780]

Can you find any writing by Adorno or Horkeimer or Leopold that mentions abortion ? It was several decades ago that i studied that and it was dull but i dont remember any of it discussing abortion.

In fact i had not thought about it for years until i read Andrew Breitbarts half baked book last year, and on googling "Frankfurt school abortion" then the first few pages are by anti semitic whackjobs, mostly in the US. But I am sure you can put me right.

There were I am sure a good number of PiS voters in those crowds yesterday - PiS did very well among working class mums in 2015 but a lot were on the streets.

I don't know how many neo Nazis there are but when I have seen the march a few years ago it is thousands not hundreds. What is for sure is that a large proportion of the crowd are either drunk or on speed. Maybe about a third of them. For sure it is the last place I would take a small kid.

Most women in this position are married and in loving relationships. And they do have to look after the dusabled child - the govt support proposal was a special bonus of 1500 zloty - half the wage of a cleaner in McDonalds.

I am against aborting healthy foetuses btw

USA, Canada / So happy to be Polish-American [49]

Welcome !

I asked because there were a large number if untrue things in your few sentances -

Poland does not have the lowest crime rate in Europe, far from it. There are 13 EU countries with lower crime indexes including some like Austria and Netherlands that have substantial immigrant populations

Poland has strict gun control laws - thankfully there is almost zero public support for relaxing them.

Russia has a large population of Muslims - 9m, way more than any other European nation. Many are well integrated and have been for many generations there. Some were probably there when the Poles briefly held Moscow.

You are probably mixing Slovakia with Hungary in your discussion of immigration.

As for the stuff about atrocities then whole immigration is a huge challenge for Europe, there is little to back up your claim about unrecorded ones but plenty of other threads if you want to stir things up on a continent far from your own house.

Not in Poland it's not. You can only get abortion here under strict circumstances. Most people in Poland think the current law is OK - only the hard line church support the governments proposal.

Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with this proposed law.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

Wtf - there are some truly weird arguments for guns but this is the weirdest. I am certain that texting while driving cause more deaths than guns in Poland. Thats because gun crime is very rare here. It's rare because guns are strictly controlled.

Next week...smoking kills thousands of Poles a year, maybe we should ban smoking and not guns.

IS I basically agree with you that life is created at the end moment of conception. This is why I oppose abortion on healthy foetuses.

On those that are not healthy then what is your solution for caring for those children ? Is it the states responsibility or the parents (for sure it is not the church who steps up fort hat) On a practical level then support for these children and their families is virtually non existent. I don't know if it's true because I saw it on my facebook feed but I read the govt even wants to cut refunding of drugs for premature children. The proposed law does not include any extra support for parents.
