Life / How would you describe the Polish sense of humour? [66]

Allright, now we're getting somewhere. You admit then that my saying (in translation): "Lousy weather today!" and Mirek's responding "But Mark pal, it's not my fault!" is clearly Polish in character-:) It elicited such laughter, but I didn't find it funny. Incidentally, we only one address another in Polish, as even after one year, their Englísh is still rather halting.

I assure you, my Polish pronunciation is better than their mutilated English, pawian! Stop making bloody excuses and take my side for a change; it was culture issue and I want an explanation, NOT sarcasm.

Merged:

Polish humor

Recently had an odd if totally harmless encounter with some Polish colleagues. Having just returned from a driving rain nearly destroying my umbrella, I remarked to Stan and Mirek, "Straszna pogoda dzisiaj!", to which the latter replied, "Ale Marku, to nie jest moja wina.", at which point both guys began cracking up like teenagers-:) Did I miss something here?

Travel / Had the most unwelcoming experience in all my travels in Poland, very unfriendly people. [115]

I had no problems either whatsoever! Again, I found the Poles unfailingly polite, if slightly nonplussed by a Polish-speaking, non-Slavic foreigner. If my Polish was comprehensible if rudimemtary, the English skills of my interlocutors were apparently non-existent! Perhaps they in the bread-and-breakfast were merely a trifle embarrassed:-) Aggressive?? The Dutch came across as almost belligerent.

You're from the Netherlands and most likely under forty-:) Hard not to judge any people based on even one awful experience. Although my all too brief sojourn to Poland was but umpteen years ago on vacation as well, I was still able to look past much inconvenience. We even plan to return one day. Regarding the Netherlands, I in fact found the Poles far more welcoming than the Dutch, and in Utrecht I even spoke some of the language, at the time far better than Polish! Try not to let a few bad apples spoil the batch.

...or: This, the MOST UNKINDEST cut of all. (Hamlet Act II Scene I, if memory serves me correctly).

It was common coin in Shakespeare's time to speak not only in double negations, but in double superlatives as well-:)
