Language / Polish people: did you struggle learning English - differences between both languages [75]

my kids are true bilinguals. We speak Polish and English at home and they go to a bilingual school. From birth this is what we decided to do. In our house language is important and it is free knowledge for our kids.

Children can assimilate up to 6 languages before the age of 6. Anybody that doesn't speak with their child in their mother tongue is doing a real disservice to their children.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Spoken like a typical American.

The fact is Poland doesn't need guns because they are a civilized society. America has been taught that guns are a necessity- it is no longer the case. This right stems from the beginning of colonization and is no longer valid.

Of course there are guns in Poland. Typically those who have them are hunters or in the mafia. I know of a few gun stores in Warsaw.

The average person doesn't need a gun. Poles have alarms, rolety and security guards protecting their homes.
Nobody needs a gun here.

Food / Are there any Polish wines worth purchasing? [65]

There are vineyards around Sandomierz. The grapes are too young yet. Pre war there were loads of vineyards around that area. My husband works with a guy who owns a vineyard and is in the process of developing it into drinkable wine.

Poland is not a cold country. Canada has very good B.C. reds and Ontario whites- and that is bloody cold.

Travel / Best places to visit in Poland [87]

Dangerous places? Probably the same as every other country in the world- travel smart and you will be fine.

Krakow is must see, I like Torun, the Tricity area is gorgeous- particularly Gdansk. If you can make it to the peninsula the take a drive to Hel- it is nice.

Malbork is great.

that is a start anyway.

Life / Poczta Polska Is Killing ME! Transit time. [28]

Poczta Polska in Poland

good grief, does anybody else hate the Polish post office more than I do?

I am not talking about my mail man- he is great.

I mean the old hags that work behind the counter that hate their jobs and hate everybody that comes in the post office.

I have had 5 small parcels stolen and one time this old hag behind the counter mis charged me for a parcel. I paid too little, her fault, but she came to my house and told me I needed to pay more- and of course she made me feel like crap because she had to walk to my house.

I would love to see Poland over haul this system.

Life / Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid? [281]

They have a lot of Polish people- this is what they share. Poles are an amazing breed. They never seem to truly immigrate- they always keep their ties to the motherland. And of course, everybody has an uncle in Greenpoint or Chicago who tells them how great American life is.

Food / Polish bacon doesn't fry up? [70]

I have never had a problem with the morliny. It fries up the same to me. the only issue is that the packs only come with about 9 small slices.

with all do respect, I don't think you understand. I replied, with quotes, a post from "boletus" regarding the American/Canadian stupidity stereotypes.

I have no mention of Polish jokes in either one of my posts.

You are half right. In Poland, as of yet, there is no gmo in meat production, or fruit and veg for that matter. If I walk into Tesco I can get good chicken. There is not two sections gmo and no gmo. So a poorer family in Poland is still able to have the same standards of meat as the rest of the population.

Your American thinking is not the same in this part of the world. Many European countries rely and trust that their gov't is making the best decision for them with regards to food health and safety. Socialism is not a dirty word over here.

I know in the states many people feel as though the gov't has no business in food regulation, unfortunately because of this- the methods of farming has become sub standard and animal feeds have changed and over injection of hormones is the norm.

I stand by what I said.
Unless I was buying meat from an organic butcher or whole foods store, I wouldn't eat the meat in the states.
As for the meat in the states tasting better- I happen to agree with you, however, just because it tastes better- doesn't mean it is better.

After living in Warsaw for 7 years we have finally found an organic butcher with great steaks. Before this we never ate beef.

Life / Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid? [281]

no I actually haven't.
And yes, American tv shows have always had a little joke at the expense of Canada. And Rick Mercer does not have derogatory jokes- like I posted previously, he is poking fun at how Canadians think Americans are stupid. Perhaps you have never seen the show.

big sweeping comments from people trying to generalize about the USA will always make you look like an idiot. especially people that claim to have "lived there for 6 months" and now claim to be an expert on the entire country. this is just one example of how little you know.

Do you smoke crack?
Why don't you do the research about meat in the US, or perhaps you eat less gmo because you shop at whole foods.
It is an accurate comment. I have never lived in the U.S. I am not Polish. I am not an expert on America and don't claim to be. And you have just managed to provide an outstanding example of why americans are thought of the way they are.

My comeback? How old are you, 12?

I am a Canadian married to a Pole- I live in Warsaw. You have to understand something. America has invaded Canada culturally. Canada is constantly bombarded with Americanisms so much so that our cultures are now so intertwined.

This is the nature of the beast- I bet there is a lot of animosity between the dutch and the belgians. UK and Ireland- I don't even need to mention.

In my opinion, North America has become a land with citizens who feel they are entitled to something because of where they are born. And of course, Poles have an inferiority complex based on their geographical location between Germany and Russia and all the battles that have been fought here.

Growing up I never thought one culture was smarter than another. It wasn't til I studied Polish that I became aware of cultural stereotypes. My Polish teacher said that Brits were considered the stupids of Europe. Americans are loud and rude and Canada was considered good- lucky me. I guess she had never been to some of the places in Canada that I had been to.

My point is, every country has their stupids. As for "This hour has 22 minutes" this is satire. It is a spoof on the stupidity that Canadians think Americans have. It is not Rick Mercer trying to prove that Americans are dense.

Food / Polish bacon doesn't fry up? [70]

what a tool. i'd put any cut of beef from the USA against any cut of beef from Poland. in Poland, cow tastes like shite, in the USA....well.....we're not world famous for our steaks for nothin'.

keep drinkin' the Kool-Aid, partner.

clearly all of the gmo and sh*t that they put in the meat has affected your brain.
I am the first to say that the average polish cut of beef is not good, however, I have found a place called befsztek on Pulawska in Warsaw that sells organic, grass fed humanely slaughtered beef.

you can keep your gmo highly processed beef any day. god bless america.

I have had no problem with the Morliny Boczek. It comes in a pack of about 10 slices. Not like Canadian bacon but still good. It fries up quite nice and crisp- we have it on the week end with our Canadian pancakes and maple syrup. ;)

Who wants Bacon from the USA lol

or any meat for that matter.
