News / Should Poland exit the EU immediately? [377]

"Poles are pleased that we are members of the EU. For many Poles this has a big symbolic meaning."

Indeed. The Polonia don't seem to understand that Poland causing trouble with the EU doesn't mean that Poland is anti-EU. PiS have their specific view of what the EU means, but they've never seriously suggested leaving.

It's an attempt to build a false image of us.

Nice attempt, Duda ;)

Life / All Things Christmassy in Poland [332]

Poland's farm-bred carp are kept in fresh water tanks unfed for several days before being sent to market.

Something that's curious - I don't know if it's the same there, but a lot of carp in Western Poland is allegedly from a place called Milicz, close to Wrocław. The problem is that there's obviously a lot more carp being sold than is being bred there!

I did enjoy all the assumptions that were made about how she would vanish, and yet she's the premier/prime minister, holding talks with leaders of other countries etc.

Erm...are you actually following Polish news?

The media had a field day a couple of days ago after discovering that many ministers were having private chats with Kaczyński directly rather than going through Szydło - it's obvious to everyone in Poland (and the opinion polls back it up) that she's just a figurehead.

Why this agresive language again ?

Simple language for simpletons that think that 500zł bribes are worth returning to Communism for.

Amazing how the workers were often pacified with cash during the PRL and they're pacified again with cash. lol, or perhaps not.

Are you mentally challenged?

Severely so, given that he openly supports a party which appoints ex-communists to many top positions. It can only be assumed that the real enemy was staring us in the face all along, and we walked straight into what will be a nightmare.

Doug, get yourself involved with KOD.

Don't worry, the only bum here is the one that openly supports a government comprising of ex-communists and the children of communists.

The critics can love Poland, or leave Poland.

Or they can change Poland, as we're doing.

The fascist elements in the EU oppose Poland's democratically elected President and parliament.

Branding your opponents as "fascist" is straight out of the Russian playbook. Poor attempt.

The strongest opposition comes from the historically most aggressive fascist country in Europe.

Clearly not. The strongest opposition comes from successful and patriotic Poles.

The Poles can govern themselves just fine if the foreigners stay out.

If they could, there wouldn't have been demonstrations in over 30 cities last weekend.

The question is, can the Poles keep the foreigners from interfering in Poland's internal political affairs?

Sorry, but Poland has meddled in plenty of other people's affairs in the past, including Ukraine's last year.

Pan Wałęsa

President Wałęsa. I see your knowledge of Polish protocol is like your knowledge of Polish history, Polish law and many other things - non-existent. Show some respect, won't you?

Experts say that it is likely just the beginning of massive run from the party that went down in polls to only 13-14%.

It's meaningless. People always jump between parties, and as the article points out, PO have much more established and stronger local structures than Nowoczesna. Someone from Kukiz'15 has gone to Nowoczesna today as well.

There's not going to be any mass exodus from PO unless they elect someone completely useless as leader.

It won't be. It will hurt Poland a lot. A lot of what Orlen have been doing needs experience at the helm, not old political puppets that will do what they're told to do and nothing else. But it's almost like a new criteria - can you run a state owned company? No, not unless you have experience in the PZPR.

PiS hammering PKO and PZU with a huge tax (I saw one figure that said PZU will be paying 3 times more tax than anyone else in the insurance industry) says a lot about the real intentions of PiS.

and growing Polish entrepreneurship adn eocnomic sovereignty.

If this was true, the złoty would be gaining on the other currencies. Unfortunately, the markets feel that the PiS policies (such as destroying the WIG20 with a tax that hammers PZU and PKO) are negative. It's particularly painful to see against the CZK, which has been in the toilet for years because of the Czech incompetence vs Poland.

Financial markets clearly have no faith in PiS.

Poland is always compared to three countries - the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.

18th May 2015 - just before the 2nd round of the Presidential Election

1 PLN = 75.80 HUF
1 PLN = 6.722 CZK
1 PLN = 0.245 EUR

Today :

1 PLN = 73.83 HUF
1 PLN = 6.353 CZK
1 PLN = 0.235 EUR

So it's pretty obvious that Poland is not going well against the three main competitors regionally.

That's a given. Amazing what an absolutely jaundiced view some people from outside have.

It's incredible. If they'd actually set foot in Western Ukraine, they'd know that those people - although lovely people - are also the kind of people that will fight you to the end of their life to defend Ukraine.

Quite. Through 4 decades of cold wat they certainly weren't going to do any such thing, at Yalta, their leader sold Poland to the USSR and very few of their citizens could even find it on a map.

Indeed. Why would they care? I even understand the American attitude - who in America would support going to war over Poland?

One reason the Polish public support the EU so strongly.

Indeed. Poles aren't stupid - they know fine well that if the German economy is so closely linked to the Polish one, then Germany will have no choice but to defend Poland in the event of attack.

Far more important to Poland is the support of the U.S. and being sheltered under its nuclear umbrella.

I can assure you that many Poles know fine well that the United States is not going to protect Poland in the event of war with Russia.

When President Trump decides to cut a deal with Putin over Ukraine, we will see what is on the table like maybe U.S. troops in Poland in exchange for tearing up the Budapest memorandum and the return of Lwów to Poland.

Can we add "Ukrainian history" to the list of topics that you appear to know nothing about?

Any attempt to annex Western Ukraine to Poland would result immediately in a large and capable armed resistance. If you know anything about Ukraine, you know that Western Ukraine is home to incredibly nationalistic Ukrainians that would fight to the last man against any stupid ideas.

By the way, Poland doesn't want Lwów, as witnessed by the fact that no serious political party considers such a thing.

nobody will ever believe them.

Yes, the beautiful thing about PiS is that they're so prone to petty tricks (such as claiming that everyone attending a KOD demonstration was paid) that when they find something genuine, no-one believes it because they've lied so much.

I don't thing PiS have fully cottoned on how the Internet works. When they do, they'll probably try to ban it.

I'm 100% certain they're going to try and introduce some typical PRL-esque **** filter that will 'accidentally' ban other websites too.

Just spotted this cracker of a story : thenews/1/12/Artykul/233432,Polish-National-Stadium-CEO-replaced

Półgrabski will be replaced by a long-time PiS party member, Jakub Marcin Opara, who had previously worked as an aide to former president Lech Kaczyński... This will be the first time the National Stadium has ended the fiscal year in the black since opening its doors for the Euro 2012 championships. The stadium has hosted a multitude of sports, social, cultural and business events. PL.2012 organised 27 major events in 2015 alone, generating an income of over PLN 46 million.

In other words, a successful CEO has been replaced with yet another PiS puppet.

Poland's post-election political scene has become very dirty indeed.

It's very very good for us in the opposition. The more dirty tricks, the more people will head to the streets. Their tricks are rubbish anyway.

If anyone isn't up to date with the sheer nuttiness going on in Poland at the moment, this article is a good one:

It's a very good article, and the story went viral. Macierewicz's actions have just guaranteed no NATO base in Poland (and probably not anywhere except the Czech Republic) for the next 10 years.

Let's have a referendum on the "refugees".

Why do we need a referendum if there's a clear political consensus that people don't want them?

I'd prefer a referendum on Duda right now. He would almost certainly lose it.

Had PiS waited for the system to work they could be working on their program.

It's interesting that they haven't really passed a single thing from their programme, it's all just about putting their ex-PZPR men into as many positions of power and influence as possible.

Petru has become the face and voice of the movement

No, Kijowski is the leader of the movement. I assure you that no-one is talking about Petru in our circles.

In some cases, yeah, that's a far throw from a single force under Brussels control.

I suppose I'm very much of the view that a lot of things are unnecessarily duplicated in the EU - for instance, although there's now the "one-stop" border on the Croatian border with other EU countries, there's still police from both Slovenia and Croatia at every crossing. It would make much more sense if there was a single common border guard, and it would allow Croatian resources to be deployed more effectively elsewhere (especially on the porous Bosnian border).

At the same time, I'd like to see countries such as Germany using their resources to help defend the Baltic borders - it's not exactly a big secret that Russia can move people in/out of the EU pretty freely there.

And most of all, it would be nice to have a common EU border guard so that practices such as France not even bothering to control American flights (used to happen frequently at CDG) could be stamped out, or the Greeks refusing any and all offers of help.

how many Finnish departments there are in Poland

There are departments in Poznań, Gdańsk, Warsaw, Krakow and possibly more. It's just madness - to me, I don't see much reason to have so many when none of the departments are particularly good. But again - I see the competition being with other EU countries, not just within Poland.

Because the previous regime violated the constitution.

Then let the TK rule and get on with it. The TK gave their judgement, all PiS have to do is respect that and we can move on.

By the way, Duda is currently violating the Constitution and ignoring an order by the highest court in the country to follow it, all because his boss tells him to do so. Pathetic.

Has anyone ever heard of a banker leading a protest movement?

Petru isn't leading any protest movement. He might be part of it, but so am I and many others.

The high-sounding slogans are only there to delude the masses?

There's no delusion here, except on the part of PiS voters that think that "decommunization" means "electing Jarosław Kaczyński's ex-PZPR friends to top positions".

No, it's a terrible idea the perceived need for which stems almost entirely from decisions made by leaders out of touch with their electorate.

Do you not think that it makes sense to pool resources though? For instance - a common Baltic border guard to defend the Russian/Belarusian border makes a lot of sense, not least because resources can be deployed to where they're needed.

I always think of the Polish university sector here as a good comparison - where you have multiple departments for Finnish throughout Poland and none of them are particularly good, when the logical thing to do would be to have one Finnish department that is very very good.

The entire muck-up caused by PO's illicit appointment of TK judges has snowballed into one gigantic imbroglio.

Why did PiS need to start any trouble with the TK to begin with? It was simple - complain to the TK, get the 2 PO judges appointed illegally removed, appoint the three PO/PSL judges + 2 PiS, move on. Job done.

More to the point, the job of the opposition is to oppose. If PiS can't deal with opposition, then they're not fit for power.

The big problem is that PiS remains under the thumb of one person who is a terrible, terrible administrator

I think they're trying incredibly hard to cause trouble so that people will forget about the increased tax-free amount and 500zł per child. It's pretty obvious that the money isn't there, so they're using this TK situation to deflect attention away from it.

Incidentally, I've heard that PiS will cut all funding for milk bars. Amazing.
