Here's a perfect example of how misconceptions about food have gotten so stuck in people's heads and also to show that it's more of how much you eat vs. what you eat:

The food supply in America is tainted with growth hormones and high fructose corn syrup, and these very well could be the main culprits in the American obesity epidemic.

A simple google search will show you that "High Fructose Corn Syrup" isn't the cause:

"There may be subtle differences in how various sweeteners are metabolized but that is really not the big story here. The reason that high fructose corn syrup has been singled out as the chief culprit in obesity is because it has become the primary source of sugar-and fructose-in the modern diet, just like cigarettes are the primary source of tobacco.............Switching from Pepsi made with high fructose corn syrup to Pepsi made with cane sugar should solve the problem, right? That's what Pepsi hopes you'll think. But if too much fructose is the problem, switching to Pepsi Throwback isn't going to help."

It's not that HFCS is worse than regular sugar, it's just that more and more things are sweetened with it. Regardless, regular table sugar will give you a fat ass just the same.

Most people have no idea about diet in general.

Well with athletes it's different, they're made big by their trainers for a reason.

but they're made a lot bigger today than 30 or 40 years ago, which is my point.

we can't just limit this to professional/college level athletes, either. you have to consider the fact that boys start lifting weights now at 12 or 13 years old and have tons of supplements at their disposal waiting for them at GNC to make them bigger, faster. Any kid working a part time job after school can earn enough to buy his protein shakes and a jug of creatine powder each month. If you were to compare a freshmen high school football team in 1980 vs today, you'd see much bigger, stronger more muscular kids now.

movie actors back then compared to now. nowadays, actors have to be completely shredded and muscled up to even have a chance unless you're a fat comedian or something.

cops then vs. now.

firemen then vs. now.

lifeguards then vs. now.

etc. etc.

add all that up and you get millions, enough to certainly sway statistics.

People are also just bigger now. Take a look at athletes in the 1980's vs. now for example. Linebackers of the 1980's are 2nd basemen of today. People are also taller now then they used to be.

You might be surprised as to the abundance and quality of food in the US. Our Super Markets are chock full of excellent fresh food. What people do with it after they take it home, have no one to blame but themselves

my wife and i go to farmer's markets all the time, we have them in every direction, and let's not forget about Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, they're almost exclusively organic now.

like i said, it's easier to be fat in the USA but it's also easier to be healthy. I like that my country provides such options.

You can eat a pile of sugar that has x amount of calories or an apple of x calories, which one do you think will give you the energy needed to be physically active?

it comes down to quantity in the end. 3,000 good calories a day will make you fatter than 2,000 bad calories.

Its the food, it has to be the food, sure you can argue it this way or that but the evidence points back to the food every time.

again, can't agree.

I've had this argument on here 50 times, but if you exchange Burger King and KFC for kielbasa and pierogi, schabowy, bigos with bread and butter, potatoes with butter/sour cream.....they'll get fat on it just the same. It comes down to caloric intake and fat people don't know when to stop. They also are too lazy to exercise. This is not rocket science.

Another good reason for obesity in America is the fact that both the husband and wife both work. At the end of the day no one feels like cooking so the eat out.

yes and no. there are other countries in the world where the husband and wife both work and they typically aren't fat asses like many americans. I think it's more common in the USA because of your overall lifestyle. Everyone in America drives. We have drive-through everything. If you live in a city, you can have nearly everything delivered to your house, including most of your meals. Life in general is simply more set up for convenience in the USA so people take advantage of it and are more sedentary. It's very easy to be fat and lazy in the USA.

With that said, it's also very easy to lead a healthy active lifestyle in the USA, it all comes down to choice. You can be a fat ass, you can be a fitness guru, it just depends on who you want to be.

Go to a major city in the USA and you will see a lot of fat asses, probably more than where you live in another country but at the same time, take a look around and see how many people go jogging or bicycling past you or see how many people are packed into the gyms everywhere....and you will probably see more of them than you will in your home country. In my experience, europeans as far as physical shape are more or less the same but in the USA, we have the avg. bodies but also many that are fat and many that look like they live in a gym.

I've been an avid runner for most of my life and one of the first things I noticed when I came to Poland was the utter lack of runners in the major cities. In Wroclaw I ran 5 times a week and sometimes for a month, 2 months, even 3 months I wouldn't pass by a single runner. You simply don't see people running in Poland like you do in the USA yet at the same time, you may see a lot more fat asses in the USA, especially down south.

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

I think we're talking about the same thing (i think). If everyone has understood one another then what's to improve?

beeeecaaaaaause like I JUST said, "I'm speaking strictly from a learning perspective."

A room full of Intermediate speakers, no matter how long they speak to each other, will never be Advanced speakers by just talking to each other every day.

I don't think it necessary that non-natives be able to digest everything a natives says

No, of course not. Hell, sometimes natives don't understand other natives, but being around natives and being taught by one gets you closer to that point.

If everyone is happy and IF everyone remains happy then who am I to insist they make corrections when what everyone wanted to communicate has been done?

I think you're talking about something else now. I wasn't talking about whether what they say is enough or not, I'm speaking strictly from a learning perspective. Sure, they understand each other, high five and all go home, but that says nothing about whether they improved their english that day or not.

the average Polish teacher of English has been, in my experience, generally up to the task.

Sure.

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

Why would that be your opinion when the majority of International business done in English is through non-native speakers?

good question.

mainly, to avoid making the little mistakes that after a while become habitual and then set in stone.

in the International Business realm of people speaking English as a 2nd, 3rd, 4th language etc., people hear mistakes left and right yet they are communicating at a reasonably high level. they start to get comfortable and with comfort comes those set in stone mistakes because "everyone understands me". spend enough time in that comfort zone and your english can actually start to regress.

also, accent. often times, as someone goes from an upper intermediate level to an upper level, their vocab, grammar, syntax gets better yet their accent stays the same. hangin' with natives allows them to do all of that....and improve their accent, making them better understood when they speak.

i've always said that I was privelidged to learn Polish in Poland because absolutely everything you hear in Polish is NATIVE. if you hear Polish, a Pole is speaking it so you can regurgitate it without any worries. In places like the USA, half the English you hear is from a non-native so you don't get the same luxury, just like when a bunch of people sitting in a board room are doing business and nobody is a native english speaker.

If there was a preference among the species, it would naturally change form. Don't forget, sexual selection is very influential. Just look at the male Peacock. That big goofy tail is not to help escape from predators.

Like I said before, when women start telling men "eeww, that's gross!" then that'll be the day they stop doing it. Until then, enjoy your snipped man meat.

Should baby girls have ANY part cut off (that's any part, not just the horrendous things they do in Africa) to please a future male partner? If not, why not?

you're going about this all wrong, at least if you're trying to argue with me.

you're comparing apples to oranges. my argument is that circumsized shweens are looked at by women.....well.....see post #191. I wasn't aruing that it should be done, rather, simply how it's perceived by women from a sexual standpoint.

Hugh7 wrote:

It's the same reason they don't have their earlobes cut off or their little toes cut off.

I can't comment on that because it's not regularly practiced so I don't know if chicks dig it. BUT, if something else started, some small "alteration" to men's bodies and women found it more attractive.....well.....back to post #191.

When women start pulling down men's pants and saying to them, "oh how barbaric! what did they do to you! oh that's just wrong and it looks terrible! pull your pants up right now, I'm completely turned off!".........well, then that's when they'll stop circumsizing baby boys.

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

here's how i sum up circumcision:

if men were all born without the skin flap and certain people had surgery that added the skin flap onto their penises, it would totally freak out all women.

when we spin it around, considering that men are born with the flap and get it cut off, the vast majority of women today don't have a problem with it......and they continue not to.

the way i see it, when women are with "snipped" men their whole lives, it's a much bigger adjustment for them to be with a guy who is "el natural" vs. a woman who has always had natural weenies and then met a guy with a snipped one.

maybe a simpler way to look at it would be this:

pole 100 women that have uncut men and ask them if they'd be comfortable with a snipped man.

pole 100 women with snipped men and ask them if they'd be comfortable with uncut men.

I'd bet my bottom dollar that the group of 100 women with cut men would have much less women willing to go "the other way".

not really. i can think of several instances where a noun must be used in the "5 or more" form other than just plain counting.

instances like this is what makes polish people switch to english in conversation, only to find out that their english is worse than my polish, it's just that i maybe don't know how to say "5 of something" for a particular word. funny, i don't switch to Polish though when they say things like "I have been to America 3 years ago" or "I come here yesterday" or "I realized my job yesterday before 5:00" or "I'm really mad on her"....etc.

Alkies on the other hand do not have to drink beer

beer drinkers across the country are not going to suddenly switch to vodka because a beer costs them another 70 groszy. they'll find the money to buy it, just like they found the money to buy that pack of ciggies that costs 1zl more than last year.

recreational beer drinker may drink at home, or get loaded on cheap carry outs before hitting the clubs

which is what they already do, only now, they'll pay a little more for the carry outs and then a little more at the clubs.

do you think the hundreds of thousands of college students in poland are going to just give up beer as a result of this price increase? as if they sat down when they were 18 and said to themselves, "you know....i was considering just not drinking but.....Warka is 2.80 at Carrefour right now.....i mean......if it goes up to 3.60 or higher, that's it! i'll give up beer drinking forever! I've got a budget to follow you know!"

lastly, let's not forget what your mind is like by the time you get to the club after pregaming. you're not going to nickel and dime when you're half in the bag on a saturday night. 7zl, 7.50, 8, 8.50.....whatever, pour me another one. we're talking about drinking, right?

i don't think the rising beer prices will make any difference in consumption.

in 1997, a pack of cigarettes in the USA was about $2. people used to say, "when the price gets to $3, I'm gonna quit." well, the feds raised taxes on cigarettes and by 1999, the price was at $3. now, it's about $7 in the suburbs, NYC it's around $10....and people just go right on smoking.

drinking is a huge part of polish culture, the beer drinkers will keep drinking regardless.

Life / Poles speaking English - examples [263]

that's laughable.

europeans need english to communicate with their neighbors as well as do international business. if you travel to Sweden, what language do you speak? what about Switzerland? what about Belgium? Portugal?

i fail to recognize how learning spanish for an american has the same urgency or level of importance. most americans want nothing to do with Mexico and the ones that actually visit Mexico only go to sit at a resort and get a sun tan and drink all day.....and everyone at the hotel speaks english. how accommodating.

16% of Americans are of latino descent and the vast majority of them are perfectly fluent in both spanish and english. for that tiny group that doesn't speak english, they're mostly illegal anyhow.
