Gregy, you've openly admitted that you're willing to tolerate people under suspicion of corruption heading up top jobs in Poland.

You might as well stop writing, because at the end of the day, it means you support corruption.

In other words, you support appointing criminals to public jobs as long as it's not PO?

At least you've admitted that you want to see Poland in the hands of corrupt criminals.

Three separate charges of corruption? Just goes to show exactly what kind of company PiS keep. That follows on from the curious appointment of the Chief of Police being under investigation for corruption.

It seems that every day brings a new story of just how corrupt PiS are.

Polonius, is it or is it not a fact that Obajtka is under investigation for corruption?

You seem to be remarkably tolerant of all the corruption so far.

This mistake may have perhaps come out from your not-too-perfect knowledge of Polish

I thought it was a reference to some family friend, to be fair.

But Gazeta Wyborcza wouldn't have published this story if there wasn't fact to it. The most concerning thing for me is that PiS (yet again) have appointed someone to a top position while that person is under investigation for corruption.

Who am I kidding?

It's only going to get worse and worse. These people are clueless and unqualified (for instance, Obajtka doesn't even have a degree!), and the farmers are going to be on the streets sooner rather than later. Many of them supported PiS, but now it's becoming obvious that PiS have launched some sort of war on them. Not only are their payments late, but there are also severe restrictions on what they can do with their land.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Another day, another story of corruption and nepotism. This time, it concerns the Agency for Reconstruction and Modernisation of Agriculture, which is responsible for paying out CAP funds to farmers.

wyborcza.pl/1,75478,19715756,rolnicy-czekaja-na-doplaty-a-agencja-restrukturyzacji-w-destrukcji.html

the head of the Agency is Daniel Obajtka, the former mayor of Pcim. [... ]There, remains charges brought against him by prosecutors for bribery and fraud. The case is in court. Minister Jurgiel knew of the allegations, that this is not an obstacle in leading an institution that has billions.

The story gets worse. Obajtka immediately fired all the regional management and replaced them with people personally known to him, such as an aunt from Pcim. But worse - in February, every single county manager (305 of them!) - responsible for payments to farmers - were fired. It now transpires that farmers won't get the money owed to them (under PO-PSL government, paid no later than February) until the end of June - which is an absolute joke.

The story is well worth a read, as it describes exactly how every single managerial job has been given without competition to PiS supporters. One such example is that one boss used to run the "dom kultury" in a small town - they have no training and no qualifications to administer agricultural funds.

And of course, the touching footnote : the Agency has also given TV Trwam 250,000zł for advertising.

Poland has truly become a country in which state jobs are given to Party members.

What to expect, the seizing of assets to line the pockets of Party members?

That's exactly the plan. We've already witnessed how a woman that lent money to JK was given the place on the board of PGE despite being spectacularly unqualified to do so, and the entire system of Party patronage is well and truly underway.

The point is that State companies provide plenty of jobs for Party members. Party members then become entirely dependent on the man at the top, as they can lose influence with a stroke of his pen. The end result is mass corruption, nepotism and disaster for Poland again.

We're already hearing how show trials are planned for PO and PSL members, all controlled by PiS. Just like in the late 40's, the legal system will be used against political enemies. Of course, the punishment this time will not be execution, but financial ruin. Victims can expect to be harassed and abused by prosecutors, while being forced into spending a considerable amount of money to defend themselves against Party attacks.

What's military know how and experience compared to party loyalty?

Well, you know, when someone has run the "Gazeta Polska" club in some village, they're a perfect candidate to lead important departments in the Army!

It's quite interesting to see just how much PiS are irritating the Americans, though.

Yet more news of chaos and incompetence in the government :

It transpires that out of 23 Generals in the General Command of the Armed Forces, five of them have asked to leave the armed forces as a result of Macierewicz's actions in the Ministry of Defence. Among those - General Bronowicz, who oversaw the Wojska Lądowe (Polish Land Forces and the largest part of the Army). His two deputies also resigned their commissions.

General Bartniak, Chief of Staff has also resigned his commission.

The decimation of the command system before such important events (Operation Anaconda, a large NATO operation in June) is bad news that will surely be noticed and not just by our allies.

polityka.pl/tygodnikpolityka/kraj/1653084,1,efekt-macierewicza-fala-odejsc-na-najwyzszych-stanowiskach-w-armii.read

It's being called the "Macierewicz Effect", in that the Ministry of Defence is prioritising conspiracy theories and intrigue over the defence of Poland.

Poland Legalises Mass Surveillance of its Citizens

This law definitively compromises the protection of journalists' sources and it is an obvious deterrent to whistleblowers.

There are no words, except that that Poland will drop dramatically in the press freedom rankings this year.

The Council of Europe, already involved through the Venice Commission, is separately investigating this blatant attack on the freedom and rights of citizens.

A good piece of news for a change :

The Venice Commission and the Council of Europe has rejected the demands by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to postpone the adoption and discussion of the opinion of the attack on the Constitutional Tribunal. That means that on March 11-12, the CoE will discuss the results of the investigation conducted by the Venice Commission, which are already known.

The EU will follow the lead of the CoE in this case.

Another day, another example of the PIS abusing its powers and bringing yet further humiliation on Poland:

Reminds one entirely of "Der schwarze Kanal" - "The Black Channel".

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Der_schwarze_Kanal

Der schwarze Kanal ("The Black Channel") was a series of political propaganda programmes broadcast weekly between 1960 and 1989 by East German television. Each edition was made up of recorded extracts from recent West German television programmes re-edited to include a Communist commentary.

Gregy, you have seen the film, right? I mean, you wouldn't be making blanket statements without any sort of knowledge, right?

How childish. Shouldn't you go back to your claims that Walentynowicz was kept in harsh conditions?

The location is very good but it's a long long way from anywhere and the roads are terrible.

That was exactly the point, I think. Isn't there also a runway there, making it even more suitable for keeping such a high profile person? I've got a feeling that the entire area was also fenced off.

I know that Ustrzyki Dolne was an absolute dump back in the PRL. I seem to recall that Rural Solidarity came from there, because conditions for peasants had become so terrible there that there was no real alternative but to go on strike.

From what I've been hearing, there are murmurings of an Italian strike within the entire legal system. Not that it would stop PiS, as sentences will already have been decided, so they can just dispose of the trial process.

Final "good, change" of the day.

Despite PiS claiming that PO were responsible for massively increasing bureaucracy, the latest "good, change" involves the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Not content with blatantly fixing a competition, they've also decided to introduce other changes.

Changes are also in the executive of the MSW. In connection with the amendment of the Law on Civil Service, 9 new directors and 20 deputies (in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is about 107 managerial positions).

That means an increase of around 30% extra management positions, which furthermore do not have to be subject to a fair and transparent recruitment process. The transfer of taxpayers money to PiS supporters continues unabated!

I wonder if that covers cases where they violate people's freedoms which are guaranteed at the European level.

Well, fortunately, I'm pretty sure the future government won't make the same mistake twice with Ziobro.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

And if they can't find any... they'll make stuff up! It's the PiS way!

This is the frightening part. The prosecutors will be no longer independent and will have to follow orders from the Ministry of Justice, which means that when Ziobro launches politically motivated trials, they have no choice in the matter. But never fear - good uncle Ziobro has also made it so that prosecutors are immune from prosecution if they 'acted in the public interest'.

You really don't get it Gregy, do you?

The whole point was not to keep Wałęsa in something from the 1950's - the point was to keep him isolated and to let everyone know that he was being kept in a Party resort, so that people like you would believe that he was actually a spy and he would have no means of proving otherwise.

Very clever tactic really, given that people like you still repeat the Communist myths as if they were fact.

The story of the Arabian horses just keeps on giving.

A close associate of the Minister of Agriculture was involved in a dispute with the heads of Arabian horse breeding. "Rzeczpospolita" confirmed the findings of "Newsweek".

polska.newsweek.pl/odwolani-dyrektorzy-stadnin-konflikt-w-hodowlach-koni,artykuly,380920,1.html#fp=nw

It transpires that Jan Dobrzyński (Senator for PiS) and the horse breeder Andrzej Wójtowicz had been involved in a dispute with the three individuals fired. Dobrzyński had apparently demanded compensation for a foal that died, as well as demanding that one of his mares occupy a premium place at the auction of horses. The three people responsible for the auction process were fired despite being apolitical - which means that we can point yet again to an example of corruption within PiS.

News / The dossier of TW "Bolek" - Poland's IPN assisted by police enters the home of the late general Kiszczak [306]

The claim from the IPN is: two bottles of spirytus, 289 bottles of vodka, 158 bottles of wine, 59 bottles of cognac, 238 bottles of champagne and 1,115 bottles of beer. You want us to believe that Walesa got through all that lot while locked up?

Which would have been the perfect thing to leak to broken and beaten Solidarność members in 1984-5 as it would have shown them that Wałęsa was living the life of a luxury drunkard while they were kept in pretty crappy conditions. Knowing the Polish character, the SB would've instilled doubt and jealousy in the mind of those people.

Got any pictures to hand of the place where he was kept? From what I know, it was nothing more than a typical commie-era osrodek.

As I said Poland is in Europe and European courts will step in if they see any signs of corrupt mis-government.

They already are stepping in...

The hysterical reaction by PiS towards the Venice Commission is not going to be taken lightly, especially after PiS told McCain to get lost.

Bolek drunk 289 bottles of vodka during his "imprisonment"

Your source of that is the SB, who would have had great reason to destroy his reputation by portraying him as a drunkard and an alcoholic.

he wasnt held in luxurious hotel like traitor Bolek..

Hahaha. You're actually repeating exactly what the SB wanted people to believe. They kept him in Arłamów for three reasons :

1) It was already secured, as it was a PZPR facility. They had everything needed to keep him isolated and away from everyone else.
2) It was a long, long, long way away from Gdańsk. A quick look on Google Maps tells us that it's roughly an 11-12 hour drive from the Gdańsk shipyard to Arłamow, and roads are in much better condition these days than they were back then.

3) They wanted to propagate the myth of Wałęsa being kept in luxurious conditions while everyone else suffered. Basic communist propaganda.

If their is any substance in these allegations then I am sure they will be investigated and matters put before the courts.

Except prosecutors are now under the control of the Ministry of Justice, hence any attempt to investigate corruption by the government will fail.

And yes, this is blatant corruption and everyone knows it.

I don't get why people moan about spending money on the church, which is a national institution and is at the core of our Polish catholic society.

You think it's acceptable for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to completely rig a competition for public funding?

Just saw this mentioned as being a brief summary of PiS and their politics. Would people agree?

1. stamp out corruption
2. ensure bread for the impoverished (Freedom and Bread)
3. fight against capitalism
4. reduce unemployment
5. break up fat-cat industrialist regimes
6. start a revolution
7. class unity
8. dissolve the 3rd Republic
9. Ensure that Poland is strong military-wise
10. Build a strong Poland

What do we think?

In other words, you can't defend the firing of apolitical world renowned experts in favor of party cronies with no relevant experience.

Notice how Polonius doesn't even attempt to address this, but rather repeats the same Party slogans.

Anyway, another day, and yet more obvious and blatant corruption.

wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,114871,19704684,fundacja-ojca-rydzyka-z-dotacja-z-msz-wczesniej-zmieniono-warunki.html#Czolka3Img

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs published the results of the "Cooperation in the field of public diplomacy 2016" competititon. The biggest grant of 200 thousand. zł was - known for its many projects in the field of diplomacy- the Lux Veritatis Foundation of Father Rydzyk.

Unbelievable. They haven't even attempted to hide the blatant corruption and rigging of the competition here. It's disgusting as to just how blatant this is - it's like PiS are rubbing it in our faces that they're abusing taxpayers money like this.

While Polonius talks about "ordinary Poles", it seems that by "ordinary Poles", he means "friends and supporters of Jarosław Kaczyński".

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

A small voice, but a significant one nonetheless. The President of the World Arabian Horse Organisation, Peter J Pond, published an open letter about the events last week. In the letter, he makes it absolutely clear that Dr Trela, Mr Białobok and Ms. Stojanowska are recognised internationally as experts in their field, and that the success of the Polish Arabian Horse is partially down to their very good management, but also down to the fact that the breeding centres relied on years of experience. All three individuals have a huge amount of experience with horsees - for instance, Mr Białobok is a well recognised international judge at competititons while Dr Trela is the vice president of the WAHO.

It's worth pointing out that none of the three were politically appointed by the previous government.

alassalah.com/en/2016/02/29/president-of-waho-sent-a-letter-to-he-the-president-of-poland-for-the-disturbing-events-in-poland/

The letter is well worth a read, as it makes it very clear that the WAHO consider this to be a dreadful regressive step.

Either way, it just shows how for PiS, it's more about jobs for the boys and girls than about promoting Poland internationally. This is yet another example of cronyism and nepotism - and no matter what the Polonia PiS lovers might say, these acts harm Poland and do lasting damage.
