History / Current Polish-Russian relations.. What do the Poles think? [60]

I am interested to find out what the opinion of Russia and Putin is in Poland - especially among the youth and the euro skeptics.

So - ignoring the agenda of PiS, which is pro-Russia in their methods.

Most people are cynical about Russia and don't trust Putin. There's outright hostility from those on the patriotic right through to more pragmatic opinions where people would like to get on with Russia but almost no-one would trust Russia.

However, there's a small but vocal minority of Korwin-Mikke supporters that regard Russia as being worthy of being friends with. These people are vocal, but they tend to be on the margins of society. There's constant murmurings that they're financed by Russia, especially as the resources of Korwin-Mikke's parties are suspiciously large.

There's also a group called "Zmiana" partia-zmiana.pl/ - this party is openly anti-American and pro-Russia. It's almost certainly financed by Russia, although from memory, there's also some suspicious crossover between JKM and Zmiana.

Where it gets murky and interesting was that up until the last few weeks, most of the opposition to the democratic Polish opposition came from Zmiana/Korwin-Mikke activists.

If so, the opposition is rather silly here because it would imply that PiS has simply made a change of people in government only and not a change in the practices of government.

Remember that the opposition is not only PO - in fact, they've been pretty much invisible over the last few months. I certainly wouldn't call PO the current political opposition regardless of the amount of seats in the Sejm.

It was the same story in 2006 - PO went missing while the SLD took up the main role of opposing PiS.

Anyway, a nice little article here.

And at the end of 2015, Poland's newly appointed Law and Justice Party leveled another challenge for proprietors of the bars, slashing their public funding by 25%.

Another day, another excellent example of the "good, change". This is an article talking about how the bank/insurance taxes have hurt us considerably.

natemat.pl/173587,jak-program-500-zlotych-na-dziecko-skubnal-mnie-na-79-zl-w-ubezpieczeniach-kolejny-efekt-pis-drozeja-polisy

There drivers who paid low OC of 350 dollars per year, and now pay almost 600 zł. The premiums we pay once a year so "good change" is immediately visible. The account of the bank I had 8 increases, unfavorable for the customer. It is also the result of PiS.

Good old socialist economics. In exchange for bribing part of society, everyone loses out in the process. I've got my insurance renewal coming up in a couple of weeks - and I've already just found out that the "good, change" has resulted in my European car breakdown cover going from just over 100zł/year to 300zł - and that's with PZU, the state-controlled insurer.

Meanwhile, this government is going around appointing all their friends and supporters to top, high paying positions - people that won't care if it costs them 300zł instead of 100zł because they're all on ridiculously high salaries. It's communism through and through.

Your far-end left-wing friend Harry may be a good example of it.

What, the man who is passionate about Polish restaurants, Polish beer, Polish history and many other Polish things?

I'd call him pseudopatriotphobic, not polonophobic.

Sooner the PO/PSL mob will be behind bars after consequences are drawn from the already completed, ongoing and planned audits of their numerous misdeeds and scams.

So you're effectively admitting that PiS intend to try and imprison members of the opposition using evidence that PiS themselves have created. How very...PZPR.

In the meantime, in the real world, there is a flu epidemic, and I am one of it's victims.

I think you should demand an investigation to punish those responsible. It's what Duda would have done.

"creating a climate of fear"- i do understand such words like law and justice alone, will spread fear and terror among PO thieves.this is not surprising

Don't worry Gregy, when your PiS boys are all languishing in prison after a popular revolt, we promise not to laugh at them ;)

Having said that, watching Kaczyński attack KOD personally seems that he's very, very afraid. Wonder why? If KOD were as meaningless as PiS supporters claim, why even mention KOD?

nah...its called :"Law and Justice"

As if. It's called "eliminating political opposition". It's also called "trying to bury the bad news about the Venice Commission's report".

There's nothing Law and Justice about PiS - if there was, they wouldn't be appointing people suspected of corruption to top jobs. More to the point, they wouldn't be putting a guilty criminal in charge of the CBA.

Mind you, given that you openly supported corruption by PiS, you probably think that it's entirely acceptable for the government to abuse members of the opposition. Just wait until it's a family member that gets arrested on false charges after he refuses to sell his land to a PiS member ;)

Polonius, those "audits" aren't worth a thing.

When companies in the real world do audits, they get people unconnected to the company to do the auditing. They don't do it themselves. Notice how they're already threatening PO/PSL with the prosecutor - as I said, it's all about creating a climate of fear. Put a few people through a long and protracted legal battle with a prosecution service that's completely under the control of the government, and you've got the perfect intimidation.

If you don't see anything wrong with the prosecution service controlled by PiS going after members of the former government, then you must have been delighted in the PRL era when the government subjected members of Solidarność to show trials. The two are exactly the same - abusive and undemocratic.

What could be more simple than looking up the code yourself, to see what you have received the warning for?

The problem is that it's not very clear sometimes - I got one warning for excessive quoting, but I really don't know which thread it was or where. At least if you added it to the post, it would be clear.

Which brings the question, if his car was armored the tyres would be special manufactured to take the weight and armor piercing bullets.

Knowing the Poles, probably the tyres were bought off the shelf from Paweł's kwik opony.

Another day, and more megalolz.

Following the emergence of a security services file allegedly pertaining to actor Jerzy Zelnik, the 70-year-old has released a statement asking for "forgiveness"[...] Zelnik had been a staunch supporter of the so-called 'lustration' process that has long been championed by the Law and Justice party.

Bwahahha. The hypocrisy among PiS supporters is hysterical.

I think this could be tempting for the poles who have made some capital abroad and wish to return.

The problem with this whole system is that it ensures that anyone who doesn't meet the criteria to be called a 'farmer' will no longer be able to get into it. It's stupid and ridiculous - there's so much land in dolnoslaskie that could be used more productively. For instance - adoriavineyards.com/en/?ts=1457285718 - the slopes of Dolnoslaskie are perfect for wine, and the guy that started this is an American professor. Now - anyone wanting to join him won't be allowed to do so, which is madness.

If there is to be a restriction, the best restriction would be to require farmers to live on the land.

(anyway, I've stuck an offer in for some land not far from me. Might as well get in there before the law changes)

On the other, there will be loads of cheap farmland available with nobody but me able to afford to buy it. My neighbours are old and would like to sell up.

It will only end in people connected to the Party leasing large farms for a minimal price so that they can profit. The ANR will be the only buyer in some of these places, and so they'll be able to put together large collective farms so that Piotr the Party member can cash in from the CAP that rewards larger farms.

All in all, very obvious and blatant.

"agricultural land holding agency has first refusal", This won't happen in practice, they are open to negotiation as is the way in Poland.

You think they're going to negotiate when the local Party boss has his eyes on Paweł's farm?

The whole system is designed to take land off private people and put it under the control of Party members.

Sorry Delp this means that you could never be my neighbors

Wouldn't be particularly keen on living in a village anyway :D

1. Locals have first refusal to buy land

Not locals, but the agricultural land holding agency has first refusal. They can also buy it at the price they set, which means that if farmer Paweł spent 50 years working hard on his farm and built a beautiful farmhouse with a very productive blueberry plantation - they can now seize it and the children of Paweł get what the ANR decides to give them.

This is an unprecedented attack on the right of inheritance. Pure communism, through and through.

I hope he'll get fired!

Apparently it's coming. Kaczyński is said to be furious with him, and he's doing a dreadful job with diplomacy in general - diplomats are laughing at his ego, and he doesn't seem to understand the most basic means of dealing with the foreign media. PiS need someone like Sikorski - foreign educated, well spoken and able to present their point of view in an educated and civilised manner.

and after the new laws in may it will be even harder for foreigners to buy land in Poland.

It won't be harder for foreigners, it will be harder for all EU citizens including Poles. The new laws have upset a lot of farmers who were using the profits from selling small plots to buy more land. There will be a strike at some point from farmers, especially as their right of inheritance has now been thrown out of the window (which is unheard of in Europe).

I found an interesting analysis on the whole situation with the Venice Commission here :

The PiS government has a simple choice - they can either accept the report of the Venice Commission, or they will have to put up with considerable cooling of relations with Washington. The choice belongs to Jaroslaw Kaczyński.

progressforpoland.com/pilne-ultimatum-waszyngtonu-dla-warszawy

The article explains in detail about how Washington regards Waszczykowski (Polish Foreign Minister) as being badly informed about world affairs as well as being very arrogant. It also explains how John Kerry made note of how Poland changed direction.

As a result, PiS have to make up their minds. Either they fix the situation in Poland, or the US+EU will go cold on Poland. That means certainly no NATO base in PL, as well as the EU starting to use soft power against Poland to ensure that PiS obey the law.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Senator McClain is a yesterday news.

The problem is that he's not yesterdays news. He's in control of the Senate committee responsible for defence. If he feels snubbed by Poland, then Poland loses a vital ally in the quest to get a permanent NATO base. As for why he signed the letter - McCain's no fool. He's been a keen supporter of Poland for years, so for him to get involved suggests that he's not happy in the slightest.

Is it really that surprising that the Americans haven't taken too kindly to being snubbed? They've got massive egos - look how spiteful they were for years towards Cuba after being humiliated.

US. policy will be decided by the next president - depends which fraction in the administration will be heeded.

The thing you're missing is that the President will also listen to what people like McCain have to say, because they have a strong voice regardless of political affiliation. If the Republicans in the Senate say "we're not funding a NATO base in Poland", then it's not happening. American politics are weird, but they do seem to work together on many issues regardless of formal affiliation.

Either way, if the US is irritated, that means that Poland is pretty much isolated.

Another day, and possibly the best piece of news yet.

WARSAW-Officials in Washington are putting pressure on Poland to end a constitutional crisis [...] U.S. diplomats visiting Poland recently told government officials that they expected Poland to implement recommendations by Europe's top international human-rights organization

wsj.com/articles/u-s-presses-poland-to-end-constitutional-rift-1457142901

As I said all along, you don't tell Senator McCain to get lost like Szydło did. Poland now can look forward to NATO backing off from increasing her presence in Poland, with neighbouring states likely to benefit instead.

Of course, it's all part of the plan. They need to discredit the EU in Poland so that when the EU inevitably takes an axe to the funding that Poland is getting, they can point and say EVIL EU IS SCREWING US OVER!

Meanwhile Morawiecki is busy making plans to take half a trillion złoty from the EU.

If I didn't know better, I might suspect that the grand master scheme of JK (and bootlicks like AM) is to return Poland to the Russian sphere of influence.

I said it a while ago. There's no other explanation for the hostility shown to almost every Western institution while going strangely quiet in so far as Russia is concerned. Furthermore, the constant attacks in the media from Russia have almost ceased - which is odd.

Meanwhile Polonius shows the real agenda of PiS - to blame the last government for everything while doing everything 10 times worse themselves.

And here we have an example of a PiS supporter wishing that the armed forces become incompetent and useless.

i was referring to payloads for lost jobs not your imaginary pis corruption.

Gregy, don't try and back out of it now. You've openly admitted that you support corruption by PiS.

First day of the Brave New World of Ziobro having absolute power over the prosecution system in Poland, and we already see the first action against the political opposition. They couldn't even wait until after the weekend.

Krzysztof Wyszkowski announced on Twitter that he gave notice to the Attorney General on suspicion of committing a crime : commiting treason on behalf of Germany by Donald Tusk.

natemat.pl/173375,prokuratura-wg-ziobry-ruszyla-wyszkowski-zawiadamia-o-zdradzie-stanu-donalda-tuska

The leader of Nowczesna, Ryszard Petru warned :

I have serious concerns that there will be show trials. A denunciation would be a sufficient source of information to recognize someone as a suspect.

As predicted, we're about to see a wave of show trials against members of the previous government. PiS have never forgotten what most of them learnt in the PRL about the justice system, except that this time, they're not going to give up power.

Isn't anybody who's a corrupt partisan who cares nothing for the Polish public as long as the enemies of Chairman Kaczynski are hurt is by definition perfectly qualified for any job in the eyes of PIS?

It's just staggering how many people have been appointed to jobs without even a competition. Almost all of these people fired are going to win huge payouts in the labour courts - meanwhile, the country is paralysed. PiS have even put our food supply under threat because farmers haven't received the money needed for this year!
