Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

More Polish than Irish, I agree.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [425]

To laugh and be open when speaking English. Quite a few really give it a good go and have license to be loose and fancy free. They feed off of my energy and I hope they gain sth. I have the drive so they often reciprocate and put themselves into it.

Love / They seem nice, but could Polish girls be "gold diggers"? [196]

True. However, their spending habits are worth mentioning, if just to show how extensively voodoo and black magic work here. I can't find the trees with money on Google Maps, any suggestions? ;)

Work / Learning Polish in Olsztyn... crazy prices for private lessons. [27]

Poles in my home city in Scotland charge 30 quid per hour, about 120PLN. Harry charges over 100PLN an hour here. If you keep your rates fractionally lower, you will likely end up getting more custom, especially given that many here have other priorities than English.

History / Poland is great Mother of all Slavs from Baltic to Balkan [211]

That clip showed a complete lack of understanding. Frankly, it's embarrassing! All they know is that they are Protestants and he is Catholic but they don't have a clue what either means really.

It makes the RCC Vs Orthodox distinction pale away in comparison.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

Pięcioro, oops. Why is hardest language in block capitals here? Is this some kind of competition? Some people find certain things hard, depending on what they are accustomed to. Let's drop the competitive undertones. My wife has to listen to people in the travel agency where she is a manageress brag about where they have been. How shallow!

Anyway, any Pole care to put some teasers out?

It takes a particular kind of person to think that way, a deviant like Leo Zagami, for example. Let's look at it, how does the manifestation of Catholicism differ from that of Orthodox followers? When a Catholic Pole sees an Orthodox Russian like Fedor Emelianenko or a prominent Serb pledge allegiance to God, would they really bat an eyelid? Us Vs Them in such a setup just doesn't cut the mustard in the minds of decent folk.

Redirected to look at Poland? There is ongoing cooperation, Crow. It's just hard to strike bargains with megalomaniacs with shady pasts. Have you ever seen any Polish PM serving in the counterpart of the KGB? Poland has issues with Lithuania, for example. It's very clear when you listen to some Poles speak that they have imperialistic streaks. I don't think this golden unity is there.

A mother must be loving and Poland's history sometimes shows otherwise. RS was a bit of a livewire and he would have benefitted from more guidance from Piłsudski, a man Hitler admired. Poland didn't modernise under him and he wasn't into cordial relations.

However, excessive competition undermines the process. Also, I discussed an issue with my friend's Polish GF and she agreed with me that some Poles have a block when it comes to Czechs, their Slavic neighbours. Poles really don't understand them but history makes them less willing. If you let sleeping dogs lie and bury hatchets then a closer Slavic unity can come about. There is much in common, a love of drinking being one of the main ones. A large part of the problem is shaking off distrust.

Exactly, TIT, that's spot on. 1918 was a landmark date here and Poland really resisted Germanic influences in 1921 when the League of Nations settled the dispute over Silesian territory. Poland showed themselves to be able to compromise by agreeing to let Germany up to 25% of coal from that region. There was certainly a Polishness there but pan-Slavism is best framed in terms of Russia and we all know the history which undermines Slavic brotherhood.

Well, sweeping Mod, please suggest a continuation to the thread and I'll roll with it. Otherwise, please leave my comments alone and get off the power trip.

Poland is a great mother of Slavs in one sense but isn't that interested in pan-Slavism. The Serbs were berated in the Polish press and I'm glad that the tour guide helped to set the record straight by outlining a few home truths. It awakened some Poles as to their heritage and they should remember that many Balkan Slavs just emigrated south many years ago. There are some commonalities and Crow can tease them out.

Religion is not such a divisive factor in this specific case! Serbs need to come up and mingle more, though. If they are indeed brothers then they need to present themselves as brotherly as actions speak louder than words.

Crow, when are you heading to Poland?

A Scot with 2 degrees in Law :) TIT does what all good books tell you not to do, overelaborate or engage in fiction ;) ;) ;)

Geez, I need another bottle of wine :) Before Poland was a mixed bag as I intended it to be. I need to amass as much exp as I can, that's the purpose in life as I see it.

Who said anything about grabbing? His head is bare and I twatted it :)

I wonder how Slavic Crow thinks the Baltic countries are. Many see me as linguistically capable, knowing 4 languages plus dialects but those languages foxed me. I was talking to an American buddy of mine just last week. He was saying that he could understand the Czech guy but his Polish GF couldn't. I understand parts of Russian through Polish and also some Czech. However, those 3 languages really stumped me (Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian).

Well, looking at it in proportional terms, ducking the deflection tactics of BB ;) ;), Poland is still at the helm of Slavism. For a guy that acknowledges the German gene presence in Poles, he sure as hell has more than his fair share of digs at Poles ;0 ;) But I like the guy and bow to his superior historical knowledge. My history pales away in comparison when cast alongside his (smacks BB on the head as a cheap shot before getting his helmet back).

I look forward to meeting Crow and will see if the man resembles his rhetoric.

Scheisse, I forgot my wink marks ;) ;) I was winding up BB. The only really pure people were and, perhaps are, Indians. Jedno plemię :) Trust me, I'm not that naive. Scots have been interbreeding with Poles since at least the 16th century.

What I will say is that, in modern Europe, it's far from visible. You see gypsies but they invited themselves for the most part. Poles are pretty darned white!

Mongol invasions? Forgive me but I'm not familiar with that. Only Tatars.

The gene pool gets filtered and diluted through time. Please don't enter the Africa debate ;) ;)

On an island? Put them on GB and they'd still be pure Poles ;) ;) ;)

Who said anything about being an expert, BB? Unlike some, I don't take what I say as factual and it is just the conclusion from listening to several accounts here in Silesia. I've lived here for over half a decade now.

It's not as German as you'd like to believe. Gwara, where German is spoken, is not as widespread as your relatives may be telling you.

The Poles are purer than you could ever imagine.

Life / BEFORE Poland.. what did you do then and what are your plans now? [29]

I lived in Izumo (9 months), then Hiroshima (15 months). I was in Yokohama in Jan 2003. I loved many things there and it was my only time in the Kanto region. I was never fluent in Japanese but I could have a pretty decent conversation and knew how to speak it. I just needed more practice. For a non-native, my level was pretty high.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

Nika, you are a beggar? ;) ;)

Old people dump their stuff on you but there is one nice cleaner here.

Beautiful women? Are you DC rather than AC? Where are they? I see so few these days.

Never bored? You are an exception as many tell me they are.

What cuisine do you like the most? I need to explore that aspect more. I know bigos, gołąbki, soups and other Hungarian stuff. I like łazanki.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

Sphinx is not too bad but I haven't been for a while. Telepizza is my wife's choice. There is one on the way home so I occasionally drop by but we're cutting out the fatty stuff. Readys???

There's a place called 2Go here which does oriental food. The owner owns the sushi restaurant too. It's for richer people but it's good once in a while. Tasty stuff!

Well, it just depends what you are accustomed to and how critical you are, I guess. I've been lucky enough to try food from all over the world and the only hack would be a lack of variety where I live.

What do you class as midrange, convex? That may have different meanings to different people.
