News / Poland fines singer for bashing Bible [159]

she is pop-singer without substance its all stunt for publicity - that is the reason I think she should be fined.

Face it, you're saying that because she insulted YOUR religion. If she had said, "I think Buddhism is completely ridiculous," we wouldn't hear a peep out of you. THAT is why this Polish law is ridiculous. People like you decide what is insulting and what is not and your judgment is affected by your own personal interests.

Public stunts for public exposure have been done countless times in the past yet now you have a problem with this particular incident and want someone to face legal consequence?

Stop it.

Then, following your way of thinking, one should face fines for making any offensive remarks in public, is that not where you're thinking leads?

Adding to that, you would also be giving a few talking heads in Warsaw the power to decide what is offensive and what's not with the power to fine you and throw you in jail for it. I don't know how that sounds like a good idea to any rational human being.

One can sue you... but in most cases no body sues anyone.

my guess.....because they want the same freedom when their time comes to speak their mind in public. freedom wins.

If saying the Bible is "ridiculous" is offensive, how is it not offensive then for millions of Poles to insist that the Bible is true? I think it's ridiculous and that you're insulting my intelligence, you insist that it's true.....why do they win and I lose?

Would it honestly be legal to dip the Star of David in a jar of **** in the USA?

yep.

You're in dreamland if you think the US has freedom of speech.

That probably depends on your definition. Just have a quick read through the last 20 posts or so on this thread and you can see what I mean. Everyone views "Freedom of Speech" differently.

Christians were outraged, but the arty-farty and liberal media types, especially those of the 'chosen race' who run the show were invoking freedom of artistic expression.

the difference being, it is legal in the USA, which is my point. do it in Poland and you're breaking the law.

Should they be able to make a mockery and abuse freedom of speech just to make a few bucks ?

if it's legal.

Yes you cannot offend the head of the goverment.

Which means you do not have freedom of speech in your country. Bummer.

She did it to be a subject of controversy to promote herself to be able to make more monies - despicable, she should pay a fine.

People say and do things all the time just to make some money.

Is there a list of things in Poland's constitution that says, "You have freedom of speech most of the time, as long as you don't insult A, B, C, and D." ???

I didn't know "Blasphemy" was still illegal in the developed world.

News / Polish People STILL denied US Entry [96]

You've made up your mind, you don't like me and think I'm the "typical arrogant american" and that's fine, think what you want. Just stop repeating yourself because you sound ridiculous. I could post that I like to take walks in the park and you'd somehow tie that to me hating Poland and trumpeting the USA. You are without a doubt the dullest pi$$ and moaner on this board, it's so completely boring reading your remarks, they make my head hurt they're so pointless. I think I'll just start ignoring you for now on, you're not worth my time.

Because the Polish Government cannot control Poles immigrating to the EU but they have a good relationship with the US Government.

another reason why i think Poles would be very drawn to the USA if Poland gained VWP privelidges is because Poles are more widely accepted in the USA compared to the UK. you see plenty of hate threads on here, brits saying they want Poles to leave, that they take up jobs, are the cause of crime, etc., yet in the USA, you simply don't hear that crap. Poles have been coming here for so long that they're like anyone else, no difference to most americans. Hell, a lot of the people you run into in the USA have polish roots anyhow so they're not going to have any animosity towards Poles just for being Poles. In the UK though, Poles are still looked at as "different".

Do you think that there are many Poles in Poland who would immigrate illegally to the USA?

Let's not ignore the obvious. There are a lot of Poles in Poland that have a lot of friends and family living in the USA. If a Pole living in Poland wanted to leave Poland to live elsewhere and he had the choice of the UK, Germany, Spain....places that they don't have friends and family OR the USA, a place where they can immediately have a place to live, a social network, possible employment connections right away.....it could be the deciding factor. Even though plenty of Poles live in the UK now with family and friends in Poland, the UK still can't compare to the Polish roots that exist in the USA.

I read the article.

"That would hurt our economy, which needs as many friendly visitors as possible visiting our shores."

Most Poles that come to visit the US for a week or two spend next to no money. They stay with relatives/cheap motels. Maybe they'll buy an iPod or something but other than that, the US makes more revenue collecting application fees for Visas over in Krakow/Warsaw.

As for wealthy Poles that actually will spend money, they always get the visa to come visit the USA anyway so I see no financial gain in letting the 10% that get denied come to the USA as tourists.

This is not an argument to keep Poland out of the VWP, I just see no financial gain in doing so for the USA. I do however see a possible financial loss for Poland because with every Pole that up and leaves Poland for the USA or anywhere for that matter, that's one less ZUS/tax payer for the Polish government. It's actually a double whammy for Poland because chances are, they paid for that person's education as well so it's a total loss for Poland.

Even some from those living in the EU countries would be tempted to move given chance.....

I'll let you answer your own question.......why would they be tempted to move?

You are not saying that they would preferred to become illegals in the USA over their legal status in the EU?

again, I've already covered this.

Ask a Pole who came to the USA in the last say.....4-5 years and is staying there illegally and ask him/her why they are doing that instead of living somewhere in the EU legally. Let them tell you.

Hey Ironside, do you have a US passport?

But percentage wise youve still got a good percentage of people who want to attack Iran

This simply isn't true.

What would the Polish government gain ?

Why would the Polish government even consider to ask to keep Poland out of the VWP?

I've already answered this several times on this thread. Why are you asking me again.

They would never ask for favour like that form the USA government, ..nothing for them ....

But if we're talking conspiracy theories, at least the one I mentioned, it wouldn't be asking the USA for a favor. What does the USA have to lose by keeping Poland out of the VWP? The 10% that are refused a visa hardly would make any difference financially for the USA regarding tourist revenue and if anything, the US embassy continues to collect application fees from Poles by making them apply for the visa.

I see more benefit for the Polish government to keep Poland out of the VWP than in it.

USA KEEPS THE gates open to ILLEGAL immigrants from say Mexico

this is a false statement and you know it. we share hundreds and hundreds of miles of border with Mexico. you can't stop all of them from coming in, whether it's illegal to do so or not and once they're in, we simply don't have the resources to throw them all out and keep them out. the border police kicks them over to their side on a regular basis but they're like cockroaches, can't kill em' and they just keep on coming.

Go ask the Polish families who lost their sons in the MIddle East for a nonsense war for an honest opinion.

go ask the americans and the american families who lost their sons and daughters in the middle east the same question. we've lost over 4,000. don't think for a second that the war is popular amongst most americans.

Also that implies that Poland's government have ways of influencing the USA.

no. it would mean that the Polish government tells the USA to keep their refusal rate high enough to keep them out of the VWP. A couple thousand less Poles visiting the USA per year means nothing to the USA from a "tourist revenue" standpoint and it also means the USA has less illegals to deal with (if Poland is telling them to do this, it's obviously because there would be a potential problem with visa free travel for Poles).

it's a win-win. Poland gains more ZUS payers, the USA has less illegals to chase.

but that's just theoretical.....we're talking about conspiracy theories, right?

Such piousd practices including the opłatek sharing, blessing of Easter baskets and blessing of newlweds-to-be by their parents before heading for church are enriching

no WONDER the world is going to hell lately. it's obviously due to a lack of wafer swapping and tap water dispersal.

Duh. doesn't take a genius to figure it out. Too many don't return like they should, they are harming themselves.

but they're not harming themselves because after all, the EU is a magic kingdom now that lets poles work wherever they want. they have no use for the USA anymore. they can have everything and more in the EU. Poland is an EU country. Poland had a good fiscal year last year. Poland is.....Poland is......Poland....

I just figured I'd get all that crap out of the way.

Moving on, there is simply no logical reason why the US would continue to deny Poles free access to the USA for no reason at all. Whether the specific reasons have been made public or not, Poles are still continually denied visas to go to the USA for fear that they may not return. THAT is the facts. The USA has no other reason to deny them visas other than the obvious.

For all you conspiracy theorists, the only one that I can see as a possibility is that Poland's own government is the force behind Poland's continual denial into the VWP.

Let's be accurate.

"Excuses" from who? Speculation by random people on the internet, including yourself, doesn't count.

What official statements has the United States government given for keeping Poland out of the Visa Waiver Program? Has Obama given any official "excuse" as to why? Did GWB, over his 8 year term, give any official reasons?

when Poland moves and borders the continental United States, they'd get the same border police that Mexico has and it would be just as easy to cross.

I miss the kielbasa in RP. Everything I've had thus far in the US doesn't compare but I also don't feel like I've given it a fair try. I gotta hit up the polish delis next time i'm in NJ and see if they're any good.

Also, your quotation from the Princeton article is misleading

no, it is not. regardless of their results, they are all contingent upon their test conditions. different conditions, different results.

These statements seem contradictory.

I cannot prove that HFCS has effects a or b or c and neither can you.

What I do know is that more and more food is sweetened with it than before, meaning you will encounter it more often without changing your diet from say 20 years ago.

I've also read that due to HFCS being metabolized differently, one effect it may have is that it doesn't suppress appetite like regular sugar, or at least not in the same way. When you consume regular sugar, your body recognizes it as energy consumption and halts or reduces the feeling of hunger because it's getting what it wants. With HFCS, it's possible that it doesn't have the same effect, or at least to a lesser degree, on appetite, meaning if you consume sugar in the HFCS form, you may continue to eat even though enough calories have been consumed.

He had given you a Princeton research and you gave him what?

".....but our results make it clear that this just isn't true, at least under the conditions of our tests...."

not denying HFCS is worse, simply saying that the results of that article are far from a be all, end all conclusion.
