What's your hobby? [191]
@Paulina
I'm one of those guys that can do things, make things and repair things.
Last year I decided to put a new floor all through the downstairs of my house so it would flow from one room to the next and be splendid. When I decide to do something I spend a lot of time thinking of exactly how to go about it. A friend from the allotments lays floors for a living and I tortured him. The basic choice was what kind of floor. I decided on solid hard wood. Next I decided to install a few additional electrical sockets and to insulate the heating pipes before putting the floor down. That mutated into totally rewiring the house which I did, every electrical cable, socket, light fitting and consumer unit (fuse box) was replaced. When I was doing that I discovered a major problem with insect infestation in the roof. I then had to replace the back half of the roof reusing the existing tiles. The front half will be done this spring/summer. The net result of that additional work was that my solid wood floor was downgraded to engineered wood. Engineered wood is softwood with a 7mm layer of hard wood on top, it goes together like click flooring but supposedly looks and feels like hard wood, it doesn't, It looks grand though but...
I used to restore those old VW camper vans which involved learning how to weld which I became competent at but never to an expert level. All my mates used to bring their cars to me or get me to fix stuff in their houses from central heating to plastering, putting new doors on a the like. It helped that My Da was a roofer and I worked on building sites and did homers from I was about 11 or 12. My job used to be to carry roofing tiles up to my Da while he did his stuff. I just like working with my hands and using a bit of brain power to do a safe and reasonable job.
I spend 8 hours a day in front of a computer and almost hate every second of it. I really enjoy working on the allotment, my shed is plumed into the mains water. I discovered that welding is a skill you need to practice when I decided to make a wood burning stove from an old gas cylinder. The stove works but looks really amateurish.
