There might be naive enthusiasm and belief in the leadership shortly after the beginning. But as the promise of "six weeks" faded slowly into a long, bloody war of attrition, with more and more young sons dying, and now at home the costs of this war being felt much more strongly, I'm totally sure that mood is turning!

Have you all forgotten our own peoples history "supporting" a dictatorship for decades?

Would you all say the same about your own peoples, families, friends, loved ones back then?

The Russians right now are not different to our own Past.....some would think having lived through such times ourselves we would have more empathy and less judgement!

(or some posters here are alot younger than I thought and truly don't remember....and never learned about it in history class?)

.....yeah....they left mainly because they blamed the EU laws for the unwanted immigration....paying to much into it, getting not enough back.

The Brexit didn't help at all...I guess that was an interesting lesson for all observers....more is needed, different measures!

Not that the complaints didn't have any merit, but the biggest changes usually come from the inside, never from the outside...

The EU will change and adapt to this new age, so will GB....in such a world the author describes GB would be worse off than mainland Europe! With the US no longer caring for any "special relationship" with the Island, their traditional Empire fading away and the bonds to EU-Europe cut by themselves.

I see them back into our folds, when (not if) the pushes come to shove!

And why not keep English as european lingua franca...it works! And I even would have nothing against an english leader, they belong to Europe too, if they want to or not! :)

I guess this will be decided in the future EU sessions....there the political skills are being tested...there the maybe new leader might emerge, it can be one from every member country, I have no idea...we will see...

No, I doubt we ever will again....many Europeans (and Iron too), would be against it.

That doesn't mean we can't become again the industrial, technological furnace in which the tools will be forged to guarantee our future wealth, independence and global influence.

I know, that is a bold vision...but it wouldn't be the first still coming to pass!

What disturbs me reading the article is this defeatism, that absolut lacking of any kind of belief in the strength of Europe...for the author only sees two choices for us...being cuddled by the US or being eaten by everybody else!

Yes, I think they will. With EU-membership, and already on the "road" to such, comes a huge fund of support....that will be used to rebuild what was destroyed in this war.

If he wants the USian public to convince he used a curious media with the Kievpost...and instead to accept the "Zeitenwende", that the Europeans HAVE to change and to shoulder the task to start to defend themselves, he warns about such an development???

I know, most of us wish the good ol' time back, but its not going to happen....so we better accept the new realities....and it doesn't have to be to bow down to China, to pay them for "rescue" from the Russians, now that the US cut back their involvement...what defeatism is that!

Right now it is.....with a Gorbatschow-Russia our both nations would flourish....now with Putin-Russia we both suffer!

Thing is, it is downright dangerous to depend that much on the accidents of history, on who just rules in the Kremlin. That is no way to build a stable future. For Germany it needs more than that....at best likeminded neighbours who follow the same rules, no matter who just won the election!
That needs a corset of mutual treaties and agreements, no matter how bureaucratic and cumbersome that sometimes (often) appears....

For an USian or a Russian or a Chinese that may look curious or funny, or even weak, but for Germany this is existential! *shrugs*

But.....thing is, historical that idea has already been proven disastreous for Germany. We are just to small for "going it alone"! At the end it always ends with us really being alone, and with that ready for the taking!

That is just a non-deniable and hard-learned fact! Other countries may follow their dreams of solitary power but not Germany, as size matters again....we are the safest in an alliance with our neighbours, even if disliked and distrusted neighbours...even in a bitching, infighting, quarreling and inefficient Union....everything has proven better for us than being alone!
