Off-Topic / AfD Party is growing ever more powerful throughout country [187]

Russians and Germans make good friends.

I agree!

Still...'89 put us on different paths! The same man you blame for the end of the Soviets and the beginning of so much difficulties and adversity, Gorbatschow, is still admired and even revered by the Germans for that what he did (or better didn't do).
Gorbatschow let us go peacefully....I guess someone like Putin instead would had send the troops to help Honecker and Co. to stay in power....no matter the costs in blood!

Where do we go from there?

This was a most hilarious read.

....oh my....that for sure sounds abit "rosy"! :)

But it fits somehow....there was no hate anymore between Russians and Germans, curious after such a war and it was an occupation of an enemy people after all.

Between the officials of course not, but also I don't remember growing up a hateful resistance or something like it....truly wondrous if one things about it...maybe it all ended with the "war-generation" retiring, the soldiers actively living through the war times going back home...maybe....

If one reads accounts from Poland or other Warsaw Pact countries from that time, the experiences there did sound quite abit differently!

any German government will have to make a case to the Americans as to why staying is in the interest of the USA.

I agree with that....as will most Germans, I guess. That's why I don't see the AfD actively pursue that point, she has nothing to win with it!

Maybe we can leave that point during "What If" - discussions about what would happen if the AfD would ever be part of a gov...regional or national. The being part of the West, inclusively membership of NATO and US-troops stationed in Germany etc. surely won't change so fast!

What doesn't mean that they won't try for better relations with Moscow at the same time...which still will probably make Poland very nervous....

3) Germans do not wear "valenki" (Russian wool boots)

But we LOVED the Tschapkas! :)

I remember my Opi buying me one very nice and expensive one (I was not even school-age yet)...with dark brown, gleaming outer leather and incredible soft-feeling fur inside...I was so proud showing it off during sledging in Winter ! :)

Hach ja....*gets all DDR-nostalgic*

and you are crying

....yeah....maybe there is still the Ossi speaking....romanticizing the West-"Amis" abit, heh:)

Doubly interesting what a true-born Wessi like Tacitus would say about that....

So if you have the balls to stand up and leave, like De Gaulle, it is possible to do so.

I just wonder if that would be a point for the AfD?

I could imagine that the parts of West-Germany where the US troops are based, had build a close economical and even personal relationship. They aren't seen as occupiers, I believe. Being "anti" would probably don't bring new votes or gain support....

Btw, the Left and the Greens own that position already (mostly) and it isn't really the big election winner!

Who would no longer be able to operate from Germany.

Interesting scenario....but would the AfD ever have the power (or the will) to kick the US out???

I mean....an Ossi asking here....

Not only legally....the troops are an important economical factor, where they are stationed, have been for decades now....and Germany frankly hasn't the means if Washington would just say "no"....that all sounds abit off!

Blame your mass media for that.

Na ja....our mass medie are hardly to blame for the Kacinsky brothers, etc.

It's a fact...every nationalist proud-Pole-Party-Politician makes a career of being also anti-German....it seems as if one includes the other automatically....our mass media of course report on that, but they don't build that!

I don't have to like you to do business with you.

Not business, no.....but putting your security in someones hands? Sure!

It doesn't surprise me at all.

Why not?

Russia suffered under Germans as much as Poland did....why are Russians willing to make good relations with Germany but Poland is unable/unwilling to?

Germany would reap the benefits while Poland assumes the role of defending Europe from Russia.

Wouldn't that be the best for both of us!!!

But for that Poland definitely needs to change its medial tune...in Germany Poland sadly is seen mainly as "hater"....that Poles still dislike/hate Germans/Germany! Not as someone to build a close, trusting relationship with.

Thats the thing....even today Putin's Russia still tries to woo Germans, with possible future relations in mind, as curious as it sounds, its a fact!

The question is: what does a good understanding mean?

....well....keeping our mouth shut, no matter what Moscow does, springs to mind immediately....no sanctions....no boycotts.....maybe even military and high tech trades, etc.....the whole nine yard!

I guess Tacitus has a point here!

As much as the AfD would righten some things gone seriously wrong inside Germany during the last decades, it could complicate our outside relationships...*looking at Poland*

AfD thinks a good understanding with Russia would be alot more beneficial for german security and economy than being part of the West is, no matter who rules in Moscow!

(Or at least alot in the AfD think that way today, that doesn't mean that once the AfD would be in power she hasn't to take a more realistic stance and correct these points!)

News / Why should Poland consider pursuing a strategic alliance with Russia? [392]

That' why it annoys me

....and understandably so....but that's what we will hear (East-Germans too) for a long time to come....especially the thing about "ungratefulness" when we don't do or say what is expected of us...*shrugs*

But....I bet you....once Poland will have to chip in for the re-building of Ukraine Poles will talk the exact same about the Ukrainians as the Westerners talk now about the East...it seems to be human thing!

That's about 18 euros a month!!!

Be realistic, Torqi....that's no rent for polish folks, that was the needed millions/billions to build up infrastructure and to bring the industry up to standard, even sweeten the deal for investors to build up new fabrics and such....

We had the same happening in East-Germany and we are still yet not done! And it all costs a fortune....with EU-support that is much better and easier done than without!

So, in this way everyone knew it too like High German.

Wow....such a huge empire and still mainly only three dialects....in Germany it often sounds as if every village has their own language! :) Without some "high"-lingua there would be no Germany, more like a Tower of Babel....

Maybe it's the same in Germany?

Super interesting, thanks!

But in Germany it's abit different, I think....we all have our high-German that we learn (at the latest) in school and all national media use, so that's the version of German that connects all of us...if not....well...we have so many dialects alone in Germany understanding would be hard till in some cases impossible. And then there are the non Germany-versions of German....like austrian or swyzer-Dütsch...like another language, heh:)

So I would see Ukrainian also as a dialect of Russian....there surely is some kind of high-Russian all can understand and agree on?

3) This inadequacy/shame, leads to a constant search for some kind of justification

That seems to be quite normal behaviour for all Easterners.....the Poles feel that way about Germany....the East-Germans feel that way about West-Germany....and if I remember correctly alot of russian grief about the West sounds also quite similiar! ;)

PS: Is Ukrainian easy for a Russian? Is it only a kind of dialect or so?

Ah, well...

Na ja....Poland (and Germany) still would prefer Ukraine to win, wouldn't we? Or at least not let come Putin so close to our borders....in that regard, we NEED to support Ukraine...bills can and will be presented afterwards!

I come to doubt that Selensky is still the right man to lead Ukraine through this crisis....to treat a much needed, close ally that way would be more than just stupid, thats insane and absolutely self-destructive, even more so than his latest decision to leash his anti-corruption office!

But, if Russians are willing to share drone technology while Ukraine wants not to share

Frankly Gruni, told that way this sounds very suspicious and quite a bit unbelievable/unlogical! And if something sounds that unreasonable it often is just wrong.

Are you sure you have all infos about that?

3) The "good" and "virtuous" Gorbachev, destroyed the largest country on Earth, destroyed our alliances, and plunged the country into two decades of poverty.

Not in the GDR....in East-Germany he is still revered and adored....he was the one who said "Nyet" to the begging of East-Berlin to please, please, please send the tanks, to make the Alexanderplatz to another Tiananmen and end this silly revolution!

I guess it's the viewpoint....ones freedom is always another ones destruction.

Order is an order.

The only kind of explanation I can think of would be that they told the troops of inhuman torture and folter should they become prisoners of the ukrainian army...making that murder to a kind of rescue/relief from a most cruel fate....or something...
