History / Destruction of Ukrainian churches in Poland in 1938 [289]

Let's see what Wiki says about the Volniya massacre: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_of_Poles_in_Volhynia

It also says that a Jeffrey Burds thinks that the ethnic cleansing that took place in 1943-44 had its roots in the above, added with the surpression of the Ukrainian language and forced Polonisation of the area. Seems feasible.

Treaty was work of German and Jewish lobby, because they were afraid of reprisals against those minority's by the Polish state or citizens - which itself is insulting !

Absolute nonsense. Germany was the defeated one after WW1 and would hardly have any influence on any treaty, even at the big Treaty of Versailles they were treated like scum. And the Jewish lobby? Well, there hadn't been any Holocaust at the time, was there? Besides the mass killings of the Jews of Przemysl (or however you write that) by the Russians.

M-G that is precious ! Now you should condemn Israel to be credible !

I know already that I am credible, I don't need to prove that towards the summum of incredibility.

You're absulutely right, 1938 was the first year when ukrainian nationalism reared its head

The OUN was already active in the late 20's in Ukrainian territory, occupied by Poland, sabotaging stuff in Galicia and Volyn.

Life / POLISH MYTHS - let's debunk or prove them! [140]

Hm, in the current spirit:

*Polish history is free of blemishes and there are no dark periods in Poland's history as an independent country at all*

Myth.

History / Polish history is 100% glorious [297]

Great topic, Harry. Too bad that nearly not many see the sarcasm in there...

Sokrates is the best with his WWII analysis.

I don't think so, Seanus or was this meant as sarcasm?
Sokidoki is like "THEY did stuff to us and WE did nothing! We're innocent yet always it's the others who do bad stuff to us."

>^..^<

M-G (yay!)

Mods, can you ban this crazy guy?

Just reading this thread again, apparantly you don't seem to get that he is sarcastic and this thread is intended as a sneer at those (unfortunately there are many here) posters that haven't accepted yet that there are darke episodes in Polish history as well, just like in any other country. Instead, they get defensive, throwing insults at Topic Starters to the point where that person who is genuinely interested in this part of Polish history, as well as other parts of that particular history, gets attacked as a person. I could mention some names, but I think we all know about whom we are talking. In their view it's always the others that did it. If it weren't so sad, one could laugh about it, but in fact you should just pity those persons as they yet have to come to age.

Life / Cannabis / Weed in Poland... How much does marijuana cost per gram and how easy is to get it? [355]

If drugs are legalized will drug usage increase or decrease?

I don't think so. I think the "kick" of doing sth illegal will be taken away and many youngsters will go look for sth else to do and the number of ppl who enjoy using it will remain doing so anyway. You're just taking away (a part of) the criminal world and will be able to focus more on the real perpetrators like dealers, hard drugs and producers. This is the way we do it in NL and we probably have the best drugs policy of the entire world with far less drugs-related problems than any other country. Our police simply says: we don't have the manpower to go after every joint-smoking teenager, so we just leave them be. That's why if you're caught in NL with less than 5 grammes (don't know the exact amount, but it's probably somewhere around that), police will give the hash back to you. However, if you're caught with more than the given amount, you'll be in deep shyt as any amount bigger than that is not considered for personal use anymore, but as possession with intent to deal. And then you go to jail. And you might not want to be caught with a little ball of cocain in your pocket either.

And besides, if you smoke pure grass/weed/whatever it's called, without tobacco (yes, you can smoke it without tobacco) it's not even physically addictive. In my life I smoked less than 10 joints and I am not addicted to it. I just don't like it myself, but if sb else likes it, I don't have any problem with it.

Edit: Hashish is considered a pain-relief in cases of arthritis.

History / History of Poland in 10 minutes. Really worth seeing! [134]

historiography

I think you mean "history" as "historiography" is the history of the writing of history and deals with certain views of certain historians on the way history should be written, not with history itself.

@convex:

It's a glitch on PF that sometimes when you quote a person, sb else pops up as being quoted. Don't know if they are going to fix it, but there you go :) And btw: I was joking with that remark.

I've watched that 'documentary' before and it's trash.

Au contraire, I think this is a very valuable contemporary document dealing with all the ins an outs of Polish history and should be cherished :)

Who was dumb enough to do that?

Jim Jones was.

Yes MG

Wow, it actually admits :)

Jews were indeed a mainstain in every niche of Polish culture.

So far this little sideway. Back to the topic again.

Destroying Churches is one of the most drastic steps that can be taken in humiliating another ppl. The next step is disqualifying them as human and the step thereafter is genocide.

History / Destruction of Ukrainian churches in Poland in 1938 [289]

The destruction of the Orthodox places (mainly attended by the Ukrainian population was a part of the larger Polish nationalistic action in order to Polinize non- Polish citizens

I do agree with that. Poland was just becoming a nation in the 30's and you see in all new countries a drift to nationalism - the search for great features of the past. Along comes the notion that everybody within the borders of the new nation needs to be a national of that nation. Destruction of churches that embody "foreign" or "unheimische" presence does fit into that scenario and it's not very strange to see that it actually happened. Don't you think it's kinda odd to see that this dark chapter falls into the same epoch as my thread about Endecja. Could it be that these two might be connected somehow and that the destruction of those churches fit into the same masterplan that was conducted after Pilsudski's death?

Lately I have to say that even though he was a dictator in the strictest sense of the word, I have grown fond of and gained a lot of respect for Joseph Pilsudski as he did a marvellous job of keeping Poland with it plethora of differences united and calm.

Are you denying Ukrainians destroyed the church property?

...*yeah but THEY did this, so we do that* Seems to be the red line of Sokidoki's posts regarding topics like this. And in the end nothing changes.

Btw: Aphro is not Ukrainian, but Polish, just like you.

It's not so much about the differences in religions but the fact that belonging to two different churches creates a division in the population.

As always it's simply a matter of "us" against "them". And I don't know when that nonsense will end, if it ever ends, but I guess as long as ppl have the basic need to belong to a group (compare Maslov's steps), it'll be like that.

Sectarian divides in Scotland

You think Scotland is divided? Ha! Take a look in NL, we have two main clubs here, the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church, then a subtop club called the Reformists, then we have all of them (I know for sure in the Protestant and Reformist camp, but I'm not sure about the Catholic camp but since it's NL, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there were) divided in about more or less 35 different subreligions.

Since you have problems writing your own native language, I assume you have problems reading it too. But don't bother, I won't respond to you after this one post. You're really obsessed with me as everybody can see. And you were from the start, always causing trouble.

I remember getting a PM from you saying that I must be the devil (and you really seemed to believe that) as I had reached post #666. Lol. For everybody else reading this, this is a true story, I am not kidding; he actually sent me a PM like that some 2 years ago.

Oh, and another thing: in one previous post you stated that I copied you. You are not smart enough for me to copy you. Period.

Btw: you're copying me here. And if you don't get it, don't react.

Now go and don't react to any of my posts anymore. You're just annoying most ppl here.

I will wait then, thank you. Make it for non- Poles too since I got a few nominations as well.

Ah well, I'm in a good mood today, the 15th and 16th of August will be kick-a-non-Pole day and hug-a-non-Pole day, respectively.

Are you asking me about my period of internment at her Majesty's pleasure or my marriage?

Which do you consider worse? That's the one :)

On the 14th August I would like to hug Pani A. Pan M may not be amused. Even platonic gestures are frowned upon.

For occasions like this there is the kick-a-Pole day on the 13th of August.

Well, in order to make "our" Poles feel appreciated and part of the family, I think it's time to introduce a special day, dedicated only to them!

I propose the 14th of August as annual hug-a-Pole-day. On that day, everybody from the UK, IRE, NL, DE, BE, NO, US grabs their friendly neighbourhood Pole and gives him/her a big hug! (no kissing allowed, though!)

For all men with dirty plans: there will be NO groping and kissing your friendly and gorgeous female neighbourhood Pole! Anyone caught trying to commit such an act of disgust, will be reported and faces jailtime from at least 6 months up to 6 years in case of recidivism.

What'd you say? Good idea? I think it would work in favour of integration of all those fine Polish ppl we have sitting around here :)

Food / Bologna & onions in Poland? [44]

Lyzko

U is Nederlands?

Anyway, Mortadella: looks the same as baloney, tastes virtually the same as baloney, sounds a bit nicer than baloney and costs about 4 times as much as baloney :)

By the way, what is "Bacon" called in Polish?

Is mortadela the closest thing they've got in Poland to American bologna (pronounced: (baloney)?

Hm, I think luncheonmeat and Spam comes closest to Bologna as in the American sense. We in NL have it too, we call it "Boterhamworst" (Sandwich-sausage)

Don't know if they have Spam and Luncheonmeat in PL, though.

Genealogy / Jewish Roots of Poland [638]

At the height of Jewish culture in NL there were about 200 to 300K Jews. Most of them fled to the new country (which was NL back then) first from Spain and Portugal (my ancestors) and later on, after the atmosphere detoriated in Poland, from the East. But indeed, Jewish history in NL spans about 500-600 years in total (although the first reported Jews were already there in 1325), so app. half as long as in PL and the numbers were indeed significantly lower as well, but this last fact can very well be contributed to the limited geographical dimensions of NL.

Martin Luther

Don't know for sure if he expressed the general sentiments towards Jews at the time, but I know for sure that Luther wrote this angry pamphlet out of frustration that the Jews refused to convert to Lutheranism.

I think some of the sentiments expressed by Martin Luther and the educated classes

A big part of the educated classes were Jews themselves, so it's highly unlikely that they would write hate-literature against themselves.

Btw: the usual reason to kick Jews out of one's country was the refusal to convert to Christianity.
