UK, Ireland / The "Paracetamol Myth" - Polish people hesitate to visit UK doctors. [51]

I don't recall ever being prescribed paracetamol by a gp - I think they would only do that if the patient was a bit of a hypochondriac. Perhaps it's down to expectations; GPs in the UK tend not to prescribe unnecessary medicines and someone who expects a yard long prescription of unnecessary items is likely to be disappointed.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

It's a little hobby for the child anyway, keeps him out of worse mischief hopefully.

A bit like saying "end of story", on a par with "at the end of the day" and "at this moment in time".

There are similar habits in Polish that one can pick up; saying w każdym bądź razie (w każdym razie is slightly better) or kwestia jest tego typu (kwestia jest is a little less bad) that mark people out as being less well educated.

There are plenty of these in Polish and it's very easy to fall into the trap of using them if you hear them every day.

Life / I woke up in Poland's Hilton of Drunks after the Juvenalia party. Must I pay the 300zl fine? [49]

I was polite and not aggressive whatsoever. Granted, I was drunk, but the punishment did not fit

A lady successfully sued in the European court for that - quite a lot of compensation too.

See post #3 in this thread.

I also had over €300 in my wallet which was gone when I got my wallet back.

Public sector staff in Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe are not always known for personal integrity.

Is it possible to file a complaint, seek to get my money back?

Yes, you could report a theft, however it will make no difference whatsoever.

News / Let's protest censorship in Poland's mainstream media! [90]

To quote the late, great Mandy Rice-Davies "well, he would say that, wouldn't he"

GW, no matter how you dislike it since its editorial line is not far-right wing and it is still independent, is still the most respected news source here.

Now it will be interesting to see if the Kaczynski Cult try to compromise that, as they have elsewhere in the media.

Clearly, you either don't read those sites or more likely expect that the people reading this won't bother to look.

Naughty.

I invite anyone to compare those things with Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland's main news site or their excellent iPad app.

Except the research showed that it was actually the most objective of the broadcasters.

Exactly. So sad to see a few trolls trying to deliberately mislead people - I wonder if they think people are stupid enough to believe them.

Then again, 18% of people, pretty well all of them living out in the sticks, did vote for the discredited PiS party.

interpreting constitution differently than the PO

Interpreting the constitution differently to pretty well everybody, including (most importantly) the judges on the Constitutional Tribunal.

Those who weren't appointed illegally by PiS and sworn in during the middle of the night, that is....

I suspect by 'circulation' (a pre-digital age term if ever there was one) you mean the print edition. Your trolling is conveniently ignoring the fact that GW is one of the country's most visited websites and by far its most popular news portal...

Or just truthful and accurate. Most people here, especially the better educated, emphatically do not support the PiS regime, one that has caused the economy to dip, one which has attempted attacks in the constitution and one that has brought tens of thousands out in the streets to take part freely in the Polish pro-democracy rallies.

PiS is merely changing the constitution

They have no mandate to change the constitution, and their assaults on constitutional democracy have brought tens of thousands of people from all walks of life out onto the streets to attend the Polish pro-democracy rallies.

anty Polish PO government

That government was Polish.

ntroduced hostile laws to Poland's sovereignty

Do tell....

they haven't done anything serious so far

Attacking the constitution, antagonising the country's neighbours, threatening to tax shopping malls for opening on their busiest day, compromising the independence of state media.

If something more 'serious' is yet to come, they'd better expand the departures lounge at Okęcie first...

They may not do everything right

So far everything they have done has been a mess.

they look after Polish business firs

They don't look after business at all, hence the soaring bond yields and lack of faith in the economy.

and people respect PiS for that

Respect them enough to give a spectacularly low approval rating and turn out on the streets by the thousand.

will be around now for a very very long time

I doubt anyone, anywhere, would believe that.

But the Kaczyńskis and their ilk and Radio Maria brainwashed her without mercy, just like the communists tried to do before them.

Yes, it's extremely sad - exactly the same way of thinking, absolutism.

what a lovely choice of words jon - I congratulate you

Thanks.

For that's exactly what it is - their core demographic are above all over a certain age (and nobody gets younger), poorly educated, superstitious and short of money. And very negative in outlook.

When they were thrown out of office at the earliest opportunity last time (when the turnout was much bigger), one of the many popular campaigns was called "hide granny's ID card'.

And given their hatred of the health system, their attacks on the economy and their desire to make everyone poor one can expect their only demographic of loyal voters to have been dropping like flies before the next election

They jumped right out after elections

It was a strategy that some certainly fell for and one that was fairly obvious for the start but I suspect not actually that many fell for it - sadly perhaps just enough to get them a foot in the door. Looking at the election results per region, the 18% who voted for them were mostly their (dwindling due to natural wastage) core rural granny voters.

The only thing saving Poland right now is that PiS don't have control over most provinces

The local elections will be significant here. The way things are looking, it will be a crushing defeat for them.

Check the figures. 18% of voters were daft enough to choose them and as I said, here in Warsaw you do not hear a good word said about them.

They have destabilised the economy, attacked constitutional democracy, broken into a NATO premises and compromised press freedom. All in a spectacularly short time. Plus alienating neighbouring countries. They are a gift for Russia who relish instability in Europe.

people that gave them victory in el

Don't be silly. They got in due to a low turnout with only 18% of voters falling for their lies and hysteria.

You would have to look hard here in Warsaw to find anyone who has anything good to say about them.

When did you last live in Poland? Which decade?

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

This myth is especially common in US.

There is no sense whatsoever in practising this unless there is a specific medical issue affecting the patient.

Circumcised men must miss out on so much.

See the poll above, and others posted here. They suggest the exact opposite of what you are trying to pretend.

Nobody here is optimistic in any sense about this awful regime - every step they take is damaging the economy, restricting freedoms, damaging the country's international reputation.

A gift for Russia who just love the instability the Kaczynski gang have caused.

More to the point, it's obvious that the money for these socialist policies is coming from the ordinary man in the street.

Their 'policies' will just cost people's jobs. Polish bond yields are already scarily high and the effect on the economy is shocking.

People are genuinely pessimistic about the future. The only positive thing is that as soon as there's an election, PiS will be out.

The fact that someone even thought that it was acceptable to take 20 million złoty from hospices to give to a priest is unbelievable

That's actually horrific.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

I-S, there's neither pudding nor proof. It's bizarre that you say people who vote for parties other than your favourite one are "Polish-speaking Soviets" and it's a throwaway remark about a lot of people which just doesn't make any sense.

And you still can't back it up with any evidence.

If however we want to talk about Soviet mentality in a thread about media censorship, you should be well aware of the severe criticism of the PiS regime for trying to stifle media that questions their economic programme and their attacks on the constitution

My guess would be that it was very shortly before the censorship of Poland's mainstream media by the PZPR ended

Nail. Head. Hit...
