Life / POLISH MYTHS - let's debunk or prove them! [141]

How many hours? Hard to say, maybe 40 hours a week. We don't believe in cramming way too much into people. Give the foundations and give them the skills necessary for them to flourish at university.

That's true to a point, southern. However, many don't want to let their standards drop. The paranoia of those that fear advanced internet users will not dissuade those from setting high standards.

I think we'd really need to experience it first-hand to get the clearest picture. Poles say they have the best education system but they haven't really experienced others enough yet. Besides, it's not much use when there are bills to be paid and you can't find a suitable job with what you have.

History / Polish history is 100% glorious [304]

Let us not forget that £ambinowice was swept under the carpet for so long. Oh, the attack on the Czechs was wild and wrong.

Sokrates is the best with his WWII analysis. It just goes to show how different books and direction can lead you 'poles' apart.

History / Destruction of Ukrainian churches in Poland in 1938 [289]

It is but I was getting at the purity of religion aspect of things. Religion, whether we like it or not, is one of the most divisive forces on the planet. It has amazing destructive potential and the code that you outlined above just goes to show how far authorities are prepared to go to create their exclusive vision at the expense of others.

Frankly put, there is no excuse for destroying churches. It is a gesture of war IMHO. It is a crying shame that so-called dialogue is just about lining pockets and far less about solving issues of dispute. I wonder what kind of discussions took place before the decision was taken to burn down some churches. It is inexcusable to just go ahead and do it.

It weaves and permeates at levels that most don't see. They have their faith, and that is great, but the church too has its agenda and motives which are not always altruistic. The overriding philosophy of the Vatican sometimes presents itself in a bad way. For me, there must be tolerance of other denominations and not desecration which is the ultimate in sacrilege.

I didn't say they were all burnt either. Good find, aphro. I feel that nationalism was rampant in those times and such OTT sentiments regrettably found pride of place.

Also, I feel you could be talking more about the deeper agenda of the RCC. I know that you understand Polish so you have access to a wide range of sources. They are in bed with some bad folk and have been for a long time.

I thought you were looking for more coverage or even an admission of guilt, aphro. The Serbian government, for example, apologised for their genocidal actions in Srebrenica.

No, I understand the importance of moving on. By your logic, Poland shouldn't be in the EU alongside Germany due to what their Nazi party did. Oversimplistic, wouldn't you say?

I don't think it'll make for big news. I can read Polish press but I don't. Certain segments of a population will always treat it as more serious than others.

The Good Friday Agreement struck a kind of peace deal. Don't you want peace?

Aphro, I think it's because you will see a closening of ties between Ukraine and Poland. Russia and Poland have visibly got closer recently and Ukraine will form a part of it too. Old wounds only serve to jeopardise that process. I know the truth should out more but international relations are in a state of flux and hatchets must be buried.

Um, I'll start (and likely finish, LOL) with The Pianist, Nathan. I remember reading a section there from a guy who was neutral on Ukrainians.

Nathan, you should know that I'm a big fan of timely punishments and not decades down the line. What happened, happened. Governments can acknowledge it and move on.

I didn't mean 'tragic irony' in that way, Nathan. I was alluding to the lack of Christianity present in the sense of forgiveness. I have no desire to talk about 'goły baby'.

Life / Cannabis / Weed in Poland... How much does marijuana cost per gram and how easy is to get it? [355]

We are born to experience and one part of that is drugs. I've never really been a drug taker but I've done my fair share of hashish. Enough to get a rounded perspective of what the drug is about. I liked what I felt but beware of Nepalese Black mixed into yogurt as it's quick release. The Australian Pink Floyd sounded AMAZING that night.

Simplicity is genius :)

Does 'move on' exist in Slavdom? It doesn't seem to. Do one wrong thing and you are hung up forever. How does that square with the notion of forgiveness?

It's a tragic irony that we are discussing churches here ;)

Conversion of a church is not that bad, it's not like it was destroyed. Besides, there are likely other churches in Lvov for Catholics to pray in. They are not a Catholic country so why do they need Catholic churches everywhere?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_culture, of course not ;)

Unlike countries within the EU, they have more autonomy in some areas in which to enact laws. Territorial sovereignty is an important concept. If they want to convert a church, they can. I'm sure the governor of Lvov approved it.

Oh, and you do, aphro? I haven't got the point of your post yet. What I do see is all too many people living their lives in the past. This is the PRESENT, 2010, the 21st century. What are you after, compensation?

Aphro, I'm aware of the hidden agenda of the RCC. It comes as nothing new.

I also know of the position in NI, M-G, but try telling that to people from Ireland. They don't think religion plays much of a part in anything.

It's pure idiocy! I'm aware of it, vetala, very much so! Sectarian divides in Scotland are laughable. Seeing differences where there are more commonalities is just lunacy!
