History / Why Poland is not Russia [260]

domination and globalisation led by the liberal fraction

If by liberal you mean centrist and left of centre parties and their backers well they picked up the baton late in the race. Globalisation was primarily driven by right wing parties to such an extent it became the orthodoxy then the other crowd joined the **** show. The reason they (left leaning) sold their souls was for electoral reasons. It's impossible to change anything in opposition and difficult to get elected on a mandate to stop job flight for example when people are living on credit with the lure of affordable consumer durables.

With Trump, the AfD or Reform in the UK Their chickens have come home to roost, right wing parties sold people a pup while doing their mates favours. Reagan economics who started the decline, was and is based on the quick endorphin rush of credit. Centre and supposed left leaning parties trotted (no pun intended) along behind them. The net result is that most persuadable people no longer trust established parties.

There does appear to be a paradigm shift under way on the globe. The so called rules based order has been revealed to be a sham, turbocharged for example by the onslaught on Palestine not just Gaza and the outrage over the ICC charging Netanyahu et al. Signatures of the ICC stating they wouldn't up hold its warrants is, I believe it's death knell, It fell at the first hurdle. Old alliances have been fractured and new ones forged especially the shift of attitude in the global south. I suppose the Communist bogey man can't be used to keep the kleptocracies on side.

The most supposedly interesting thing is the arguments used, front and centre are the usual wedge issues which are as old as politics, nothing new there. Secondly, attempts to absolve what may be called traditional voices from any responsibility are laughable. The herd of "independent thinkers" all wading in the same shallow pool will be funny in about 20 years but today they are as useful as cannon fodder for billionaires. Finally, big media platforms and their ideas of free speech are so clearly compromised they will be regulated to death.

What path Poland takes is crucial it should throw its weight behind Europe. I know you don't like the EU and believe it's a German centric operation. I have problems with the EU in that I think it's too economically right wing but at the end of the day it's better being in fighting for reform than out howling at the moon.

History / Where did Poles spend summer vacations in the PRL era? [63]

Strange you mentioned one.

It is not so strange as all the cult followers have posted salacious comments about women and girls.

This particular individual threatened a woman here after cyber stalking her.

Off-Topic / 75 Years of Israel and the War - part 3 [462]

After repeatedly advocating ethnic cleansing and theft, Trump has now directly threatened Palestinian civilians with death unless they do as he says.

Looks like genocide Joe wasn't the worst US Taoiseach.

Feedback / Getting logged out of PF [26]

the best part, it is free.

Basic rule of thumb...never ever use free "software".

Occasionally clearing the cache is required but removing browsing data does nothing to stop targeted adds. The big advertising platforms like facebook etc (and others) gather info as soon as you visit a site sending data until you leave the site.

@jon357
This is a brand new pro and all is good now. I'll edit with Firefox on Android but pretty sure Safari have addressed the issue as Admin removed the fix.

Edit on firefox on a really old android and no issues at all. There are other browsers to test but I dont think there is any need

Windows PC too!

Thats weird...
I've never had any problem with a PC/laptop/imac ever(this is a windows 10 machine on Chrome) . I posted with an ipad for years with no issues.

When typing on a portable device keep typing and ignore the" jumpiness"or repeatedly swipe the text box to the top again

We added some "hack" to browsers that don't support the modern native feature

Sounds reasonable...

avatars, user titles, reaction score, points and smileys

Don't like that.

Note this is older iPad and the jumping problem happens when typing a post but no issues when typing in edit mode

@BB
It seems to move down with each character typed.

Posting this from an iPad Pro. The screen moves down a single row when typing each character.

Edit on older iPad (9th gen) both using safari no issues on this older iPad.

My android phone jumps around when typing on Firefox.

nice mentality! :)

Thank you.

People move for a better life individuality has nothing to do with it. For example the people who go to the Gulf dictatorships do so for money not because they can criticise the rulers.

I am content living where I do I like Europe. If I had been born in either place I would on balance, probably be just as content as I am now.

The question of which system is better for the individual is irrelevant. The discussion is about the historical record of both systems. I don't believe that either Stalinism or unfettered capitalism tinged with evangelical religious overtones work for most people.

@mafketis
I don't think so, both systems fcuked people over in pursuit of their respective ideologies.

I have a different view. I know us crimes are as bad as soviet crimes if not worse. Soviet intention was economic and political reform. US crimes were crimes of eradication

You made the statement, not me...

I did indeed without realising that for Americans citizenship is important with respect to murder specifically who does it and who dies.

You claimed that US presidents killed

I didnt realise that the people killed dont count as they were not worthy of US citizenship.

So I should have said that unlike Stalin the office of president of the United states didnt kill its own citizens it simply oversaw the seizure of indigenous land and murdered the people who had lived there. All to make America great.

Thats grand, nothing to complain about, US good rest of world bad.

Wanna try again?

No need, the genocides happened to MAG and the perpetrators are still lauded just like Stalin in Russia.

Which US president(s) killed millions of US citizens?

All of them until there were so few left it wasnt worth the effort. They never bothered documenting the slaughter in detail but its generally accepted that this series of genocides happened. I'm surprised that you have never heard about it.

@marion kanawha
My comment is relevant as a comparison of the veneration of Stalin and the office of the president of the US. Both killed their own citizens by the million.

You read Ferguson and Snyder but didnt mention the obvious bias of both authors, I've read both. Snyders book is by far the better, its well researched however the one dimensional driving narrative becomes frustrating after a while. Fregusons' is more akin to a party trick or a TV special on the history channel..

Polonia / Elon Musk tells Germans to "move on"! [247]

RU would have lost to Germany in WW2 without Poles and without a land lease.

Care to expand on that?

Are you suggesting that the dribble supplied to the Soviets would have equipped 35 million soldiers or compensated for 22 million deaths?

@mafketis
The US killing millions of native Americans made a whole series of Presidents popular. Does that count?

Polonia / Elon Musk tells Germans to "move on"! [247]

@Bratwurst Boy
The post war industrial world limited the ability of oligarchs to accumulate disproportionally vast wealth that world is now seen as a golden age.

The right forced deregulation and offshoring resulting in a much more precarious standard of living for the overwhelming majority of people while some got hyper rich.
The right are now calling for a reversal of the so called free trade they championed cos it doesnt work. This about face is matched by their championing of free speech something the right has always opposed.

Removing the ability of oligarchs to amass ridiculous and disproportionate wealth is a good thing and is not a smash and grab as painted by shills for billionaires.

UK, Ireland / What do Polish people miss about Ireland when they come back to Poland? [26]

popular expression

A phrase was invented to explain this, ie the silent majority or sometimes the moral majority where a majority opinion was conjured from thin air with very little evidence and given a moral authority. This is ofcourse nonsense.
