Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

my grandma nearly gave me a thick ear for calling her granny

hahaha yeh. SOme Grannies like to be called Nanny, others prefer Grandma and still others (well one of my aquaintance) hate all of these and insist on either "Grandmother" or first name.

All this Babcia/Busha thing is really getting boring. I bet its a class thing or something. It's so unimportant, why do certain Brits who havent even got a Busha get so hot under the collare about it? Call yer nan wot u like.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

Was Marie Curie French or Polish? French of course by birth.

the occasional well imformed 'humorous' post on Polish peoples

right...

At least I haven't become resident on here

are you sure??
BTW I do think Polish girls are very pretty in general, but what impresses me more about them is, for example, their excellent linguistic skills. Looks aren't everything guys!

My dear Dad has a pin up of Maria Sklodowska on his study wall, and its not for her figure..xx

Life / Do you collect mushrooms in your country? Poles in Poland do. [94]

ha ha same here in Wales, full stop. Although I did collect a few normal field type mushrooms last year, they were delicious, but will leave it to the babcias of POland to be more adventurous, don't wish to poison myself!

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

Would a 30 year old family court judge be allowed to preside over a case of international significance (In Law) with no prior knowledge of International Law and no experience in England? No.

why would/should a Polish Judge "have experience in England" any more than vice versa? Strange comment.
Incidentally none of us would have any idea what goes on in a Family Court in England, as these are totally secret.

Travel / Cheapest fare to poznan from Berlin? [10]

@ depox
The thing to do to make it cheaper to is to buy a ticket from Lichtenburg to Kustrin on the German side. Then when you arrive in Kostrzyn get off the train and buy a ticket to Poznan. Don't worry the train waits a while there. (but don't blame me if it doesn't) :)))))

This way you avoid international fares.

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

e 'first attempt' per year that's free - otherwise it's nearly 2,000 pounds a year

and for the English, 9,000 quid, first attempt or not.

Scottish health service is pretty poor in rural areas.

and outside of London its pretty shyte in England too

No riots in Scottish cities,

the Scottish and the Welsh are treated a WHOLE lot better than the English, its a fact. No prescription charges, no unnaffordable uni fees, no, these are reserved for the English. And if we say anything we are told we are "racist"

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

It is unfair to tell a black chap that he is european or english( substitute english for any other european nationality). It is patently untrue. He is and always will be, an african living on western european soil.

Lineage is more important than a passport. Remember that

FGS theres "black chaps" living in London Bristol or Liverpool whose "lineage" is lost in the mists of time. does it matter?

Language / Mixed English Grammar Thread [233]

Yes but Seanus 90 per cent of native speakers of English would say "the Police are", wouldn't they?
Therefore that one is correct.
I keep reminding everyone here that there is no academy of the English language and its beauty and strength lie in its flexibility and ability to adapt. ...:)

Most Brits say "If I was..." vs. "If I were.."

no we do not...:) Even my kid says "If I were you" AND he knows its the "subjunctive"..:)))... mind you he has got a pedantic old bat for a mum...;)

you may not be familiar with the terms but for example "second conditional" is like
"If I were Queen I would chop off your head"
and "third conditional" is
"If I hadn't eaten so much I wouldn't have got so fat"
While it's more natural to talk in a combination of these....the "mixed conditional"
Hope this helps and the muppets in the gallery don't start.

While the contraction "Amn't I?" for "Am I not?" is flat wrong,

well I would have to disagree as there are many native speakers who would say this naturally (from Ireland)
Therefore it's not "flat wrong", it's dialect.
The great thing about English is it's impossible to be wrong. If something is used and understood, then it's correct, innit?...:)

am I not" correct and "aren't I" used colloquially?

"Am I not" is quite old fashioned but correct, as you say. It's the kind of thing my mum or my old English teacher would have said. Sometimes I find myself saying it to my kids.

"Aren't I" is colloquial, everyday English, yes.
As for pennyworth, I like your analysis alot..:)

Life / New Polish generation prefers black culture? [145]

he number of great blacks is heavily out-numbered by bad... like any culture... but I said by bad... not nobodies...

ditto for Sikhs and whites or anybody really isn't it?
I was really not surprised to find out you are from India,,,your people hating Afro Caribbeans is a major source of racial friction and trouble in my city.

As for your comments about "mad drug addicted single mothers" the vast majority of single mothers of all colours are working hard to raise their kids as best they can.

Life / New Polish generation prefers black culture? [145]

spot on Mr Midas.....its all dumb stereotypes and assumptions and media driven generalisations

why can not black people bring a taste into a country without bringing it down, or do they only appeal to low-class, better yet, uneducated people.

What is this rubbish?? Ever heard of CLR James author of the "The Black Jacobins" and many other academic books, Viv Richards world class cricketer, Benjamin Zephaniah poet, Black women writers from America such as Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison, plus, perhaps better known, many famous musicians and contemporary TV presenters??

This thread is getting silly....and then they talk about "uneducated"

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

Well, I won't be satisfied until I get you up to a 90% agreement level ;) ...but please, don't join the "slut walk" :)

hmm not sure about 90 per cent... I will let u know..:)
btw wtf is a "slut walk"? My mum used this word in quite a different sense, as in "you little slut your room is a mess and you haven't washed your hair".....so maybe its a load of scruffy women??

why should he unless she is disabled or maybe he if was just being courteous as one would to anyone who is passing through the door just behind you...

As for that dreadful thing of messing about with the chair at dinner as though the woman is so weak she cannot move it herself...it's just an insult.

And as for the gift thing..well I have this female friend who loves to be "spoilt" (as she calls it) by her men, and indeed would expect nothing less.......I asked her why he had given her his car,,she smirked and said it was becasue she was " good in bed". I found this disgusting as though we are all nothing more than w.hores. (mind u if anyone wants to give me a car, mines a BMW, thanks)

Life / Customs - First Holy Communion in Poland [42]

Hence why something religious is appropriate, not money.

Of course, a good idea could be to give some religious items and make a donation to a Catholic foundation on their behalf - many churches will have their own foundations set up to help people in the parish

oh my my......how high your horse is....

My kids were furious with me for not making them catholics when they heard their Polish cousin had copped 800 zl for his first communion. 800 zl!!! Says it all for me about the catholic church really.
