Stanisław Wyspiański, a famous Polish playwright, painter and poet, was born exactly 155 years ago. When Polish currency underwent redenomination in 1995, the value of banknotes with Wyspiański went down from 10000 zlotys to just 1 measly zloty...

... luckily the works of the author of Wesele (The Wedding) never underwent redenomination, and they are still valued highly as timeless classics.

^^ to be historically honest, one must mention the dark side of the Battle of Racławice: in the midst of battle Polish scythemen were slaughtering also those Russian soldiers who shouted 'Pardon!' which meant that they surrendered. Of course, you could argue that the knowledge of French among Polish peasants was rather rudimentary back then but still it casts a bit of a shadow over the victory.

Scythemen, forward!: 1794

This month we celebrate the 230th anniversary of the victorious Battle of Racławice. In this battle, scythe-bearing peasant recruits - exhausted after a long march, very often marching barefoot (shoes were seen as a bit of a luxury in the Polish countryside those days) - attacked, under heavy artillery fire, the positions of Russian army under general Александр Петрович Тормасов. Russian forces were crushed and in the process a lot of weapons/material were captured, including: 12 cannons, 1200 rifles with bayonettes, cossack pikes, three times more ammunition than Polish forces had before the battle, and last - but not the least - supply wagons with shoes which were given to the peasants as a reward, so finally many of them could march into the coming battles of Kościuszko Uprising like any decent soldier should. :)

In the famous painting of Józef Chełmoński above, we see Kosynierzy (scythemen) praying before the battle to Saint Virgin Mary Queen of Poland. Many years later the legendary bravery of scythemen was adopted together with their symbol by Polish fighter pilots...

Somehow they forget to mention that Jesus was a Jew himself (and a religious one at that!), as well as Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and the apostles. Most of the disciples at the beginning were Jews and they were preaching originally to the Jews.

What the disciples were hiding from and were afraid of was the Sanhedrin - the body governing insitutionalised religion that tried to force its laws upon people. Somehow we don't hear this preached too often in churches. Imagine a parish priest saying: "beware of institutionalised religion, beware of modern Sanhedrin which - being corrupted itself - puts heavy weight upon people and tries to control them; beware of the pharisees - outwardly religious, openly practising, but with devil in their hearts!". Yeah, I'd like to hear that! :)

Old prejudices die hard. If people considered Jews to be "Christ killers" and usurers for centuries (or even millenia), then it won't disappear just like that. Plus all the idiotic conspiracy theories present even today (see Crnogorac).

Besides, Jewish culture puts high emphasis on learning and education and their religious upbringing encourages reading and memorisation. As a result, your average Jew tends to be better educated and more intellectually capable (with all the reading and memory training) than your average native which doesn't exactly provoke warm feelings either.

Also, Jews tend to be good with money (earning, saving, giving to charity etc.) and there's much more solidarity between Jews abroad than between Poles for example, so - on average - they tend to do better financially than other immigrant groups which, again, doesn't win them many friends.

Pretty simple really, I'm surprised you haven't figured it out yourself, Rich.

Hmm... remember that there are many branches of Judaism but even the ultra-orthodox accept converts (without, of course, encouraging them, to say the least). As for rejecting Jesus as Messiah - well, they have valid... well, maybe not entirely valid but strong and biblical reasons not to...

The original reason was the Jewish religion. It was the first moralistic monotheism in which the same moral rules applied to both the rich and the poor, young and old, workers and kings. Everyone had to follow the God-given laws and the fact that you were strong, powerful and rich didn't give you the right to oppress and exploit the weak, insignificant and poor. Imagine how this was received by the rich and powerful of Antiquity :) Judaism was the ultimate heresy for every absolute ruler of Greece, Rome, Persia, and for the ruling elites of any ancient kingdom.

Then, because of the said hatred, Jews were barred from entering many professions, from taking positions of power, certain offices etc., so they took upon something that was allowed for them but generally frowned upon for religious reason - money lending (back then known as usury). So, it added brand new hatred to the old religious one, reinforced by the general lack of education and idiotic legends e.g. about ritual murders spread by haters throughout ages.

The fact that Judaism was never really a "conquering religion", like Islam or Christianity, and that potential converts were rather discouraged than encouraged to join - which created closed, hermetic, communities - didn't help either.

At 4:30 a.m, on 19th August 1980, a freight train collided with a passenger train which ran from Toruń Main Station to Łódź Kaliska. As a result, 65 people were killed and 64 injured, out of which additional two later died, bringing the total number of dead to 67. To date, it is the deadliest railway accident in the history of Poland.
