Love / Divorced a Cheating Polish Wife [62]

a warning to others.

His partner cheated. Most don't, fortunately.

As ever, there may be a lot he isn't mentioning in either of the threads in which he's posted about this.

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

like music that sounds like it's from a place

Me too, however it doesn't always sell well on the mass market.

I enjoy listening to French music, however it just doesn't sell outside le francophone.

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

Polish Rock bands that have sung in English, which is the key to international success,

It's often the themes that wouldn't translate well. Lyrics about longing, tears, angst, impossible love and existential depression don't fit well to upbeat melodies on the international market. It's not impossible, however it's near impossible to do well.

Genealogy / What it means to be Odrowąż? [14]

After all, they must have got the information on ancestry from somewhere.

It's best to be very wary of 'research' that others have done on ancestry.com, unless scans of documents etc are attached as files. Especially if it's family trees done by people across the Atlantic, in Australia etc. They've often just accepted pop up suggestions from the website and made connections between individuals in the past that are unrealistic but which look interesting/convenient. I've had that issue myself.

It's better not to accept the suggestions that come up, and better not to take other online family trees as gospel.

History / Vilamovian language - now that's something interesting [24]

Manx or Cornish

They're a step further down the line. Wymysorys is a moribund language with only a tiny handful of (largely uneducated) native speakers, Manx and Cornish lost their last native speakers many years ago and the only people who speak it are educated people trying to revive it.

Perhaps Wymysorys can be saved before it gets to that stage, perhaps it can't. I hope it can.

The future doesn't look bright for Hałcnowski either.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

back from Dealz. They had Sweet Fanny Adams. Just confectionary (though there are reduced chocolate oranges), odd sauces, some of them German and breakfast cereals that I hadn't heard of.

red peppers

We've made chilli sauce (tabasco style) a few times. Not too hard as long as everything's sterile.

To make pickled red cabbage (or beetroot) British.style, it needs mild vinegar, allspice and peppercorns. Those two work well with gherkins also.

I find the Polish red cabbage in jars to be mild; probably OK for heating up but no kick from being pickled. They're cut very finely as well. You can make them just about OK by pouring some of the liquid out of the jar and replacing with vinegar however you never get that crunch.

Definitely off to Dealz now. I meant to ages ago but sat around online instead.

Life / Are hipster undercuts popular in Poland? [14]

excpet for the faux hawk

The same. They never looked good.

I hate the way people with undercuts walk all self-important.

A bit like waxed beards and moustaches too.

Mostly red cabbage or beetroot. I prefer the British type to the Polish. Sometimes we do onions, and also ogórki kiszone. Plickled chilli too, and my OH makes kimchi which I can't stand.

More diverse and generally aligned with European trends

To a point. There's still the Polish mullet and shaved heads are still popular here. The ratio of hair salons to people is still low.

to your BS?

Only the truth. Did you really think that heteros start the fashions? Have you ever been to a fashion event?

big with the Nazi youth.

1930s short haircuts. Goes well with a suit rather than sportswear.

The hipster undercut has two big advantages; it looks OK for work and going out, and also it only works on young people.

white vinegar

That's OK if you dilute it to pickle.

if its a choice between Sarsons malt vinegar and aftershave Sarsons wins hands down:)

The same. Mind you, in Poland aftershave is often cheaper than Sarson's...

I'm more interested in malt vinegar (there's still some HP left from when Dealz last had it). Nothing else is better on chips and useful for pickling too.

They have a shop in Warsaw.

I know it.

They have some interesting things, however they're famous for being extravagantly expensive. I once did some shopping in there and worked out that it would have been cheaper to get a wizzair to Doncaster Airport and pay for the baggage coming back.

I'm never keen on online shops, however it's tempting.

MiniEuropa used to have it at a price.

Off to Dealz in a minute, now godzina seniora's finished. The last few times I've been, they've had no malt vinegar and no HP. Is there anywhere else that sells them in Warsaw?

History / The Bar Mleczny / Milk Bar (memories) [15]

The new ones seem better than the old. I noticed that the Poznań ones were among the first to modernise. Warsaw among the last.

They also have the spaghetti bars there which are fun, if odd.

he's definitely on the left side.

Nowadays there's neither left nor right for the metropolitan young, however traditionally gay men create all fashions and others just follow.

Women and gay men.

No, just the latter.

A recent photo from Warsaw

They look fairly smart as modish hairstyles go. basically a variation on the dos et côtés courts with a nod to the 90s flat top.

Better than the Polish mullet you used to see (and still do in out-of-the-way places) where the hair is left thick on the back of the head.

man buns

These however do not look good. They exist only to compensate for inadequate genitalia.

he must be gay

Did you imagine for a minute that fashions, hairstyles and most music have any other origin? Who did you think styles the hair, designs, markets and sell the clothes and produces/promotes the music?

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

noble food

The problem is that there was only ever a vanishingly small amount of that, among the wealthiest aristocrats.

There were some interesting things that came later with trade, industrialisation and diversity, like Pierogi Lwowskie in the 1930s. Paradoxically there were also traditions lost during the 1920-1939 period of homogenisation.

I like the regional specialities (such as are left) like forszmak, things you only get in certain parts of the country.
